Peter Appleyard and The Jazz Giants – The Lost 1974 Sessions – Linus

Peter Appleyard and The Jazz Giants – The Lost 1974 Sessions – Linus 270135, 73:08 ****:

(Peter Appleyard – vibes; Hank Jones – piano; Zoot Sims – tenor sax; Slam Stewart – bass; Bobby Hackett – cornet; Mel Lewis – drums; Urbie Green – trombone)

Peter Appleyard is one of Canada’s best known and highly-regarded jazz musicians. After emigrating to Canada from England via Bermuda in 1951, he first established his reputation as a member of the Toronto-based Calvin Jackson Quartet in the mid 1950s, and then went on to front his own bands. He toured with Benny Goodman in the 1970s and it was during his time with the band in 1974 that this session was recorded.

This highly infectious and swinging session was a fortuitous occasion. Appleyard took advantage of having all the participants in Toronto for a concert led by him, and subsequently he arranged to bring all of them into the studio. This was the one and only record date by this aggregation and although it has been close to 40 years since then, the session holds up remarkably well. Using “head “ arrangements, the band kicked off the session with a Duke Ellington medley with Appleyard leading the way on “Sophisticated Lady” and each of the players picking up flawlessly on the other Ellington classics. “After You’ve Gone”, following a lovely slow intro from Bobby Hackett, is a knockout with both Appleyard and Sims especially forceful. The group segues into an up-tempo “Tangerine” with Hank Jones leading the way and a couple of strong choruses from Urbie Green along with some interesting exchanges between Sims and Appleyard.

The band then starts a series of feature performances beginning with Bobby Hackett, who was the natural heir to Bix Beiderbecke. He treats us to a sympathetic rendition of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” with a stylish accompaniment by Hank Jones. Urbie Green who was a much under-appreciated trombonist shows his mettle on “But Beautiful”. Zoot Sims has never been more rhythmically infectious than on “You Go To My Head”. As with all these features, the ever- inventive Hank Jones keeps up his sensitive piano comping in the background and then from time to time embarks on some glorious solos. On “Indiana“ Slam Stewart gives the tune his unique singing/humming bass interpretation. The Benny Goodman opus “A Smooth One” brings the entire band together for a well throughout interpretation with Hackett on cornet again showing his classy style. Finally Hank Jones demonstrates his impeccable taste with a solo rendition of “Dancing On The Ceiling”. There is a final track of outtakes that really adds nothing to the session and should have been dropped.

Overall this is a gem of a disc and listeners should be appreciative that it has been resurrected after all these years.

TrackList: Ellington Medley; After You’ve Gone; Tangerine; You Don’t Know What Love Is; But Beautiful; You Go To My Head; Indiana; A Smooth One; Dancing On The Ceiling; Bonus Track

When cooking can be deadly

When cooking can be deadlySTORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Worldwide, nearly 2 million premature deaths each year are linked to indoor smoke
  • The smoke comes when people use an open fire to cook or heat their homes, a common practice
  • In Tanzania, they’re producing “clean cookstoves” that emit far less smoke, fewer pollutants

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (CNN) — An estimated 3 billion people — nearly half the world’s population — still use an open fire as their primary source of energy for cooking and heating.

But there’s a problem: the smoke.

“You have respiratory issues, lung disease, you’ve got pneumonia, and you’ve got longer-term issues like cancer and heart disease as well that can result from exposure to indoor air pollution,” said Radha Muthiah, executive director of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.

The World Health Organization says this type of pollution causes nearly 2 million premature deaths each year. That’s more than tuberculosis and three times as many as malaria.

Everline Kihulla is among the people trying to do something about it. She works for TaTedo, which manufactures and sells “clean cookstoves” in Tanzania.

Smoke from open-fire cooking is linked to respiratory issues, lung disease and even cancer.

TaTedo’s stoves are made with clay liners that, along with other simple design features, emit far less smoke and fewer pollutants. And they use a fraction of the fuel.

“This (stove), we have improved it, and it currently uses almost 50%, compared to the traditional one,” she said, crouching beside one of TaTedo’s models. “The charcoal consumption here is less, compared to the traditional one.”

Another benefit is that these stoves are made locally. A nearby workshop employs 21 people and churns out 400 to 500 stoves each month. Each person follows a cookstove through every stage of production, from pottery to painting. This teaches each worker a variety of skills.

Producing locally also boosts the economy and keeps costs down, although price is an issue. Cookstove prices start at about $6 (U.S.), a lot of money for many families in developing countries.

Still, Lillian Njuu, a Dar es Salaam resident, thinks the expense is worth the health of her family. She has used a clean stove for two years, she said, and she plans to buy another.

While the upfront cost to buy a cookstove is high, the fuel costs are lower because it burns less. That, in turn, has an environmental impact. Burning less charcoal or wood means there’s less deforestation, something that has caused flooding and other major problems in many countries.

“It’s one relatively simple intervention that has a multitude of impacts,” Muthiah said.

Now, the challenge is to get clean stoves into enough homes to really make a difference.

From the looks of it today has been a pretty lame day in world history. I mean just look at what a quick search of this dates happenings through out history turned up.  There are a few happenings that are kinda sort interesting and a couple that have actually changed the course of history and had a global impact. But while the Murder of Gandhi, Hitler’s installment of power, the Vietnam War and the beheading of King Charles were all major events the rest of the list doesn’t look so dramatic in the grand scheme of the way the world has turned out so far. No that each hasn’t had some sort of impact but really in our daily lives those are really the only ones that stand out to me.

Actually, the birth of FDR has effected us all. His policies, good or bad, have touched everyone who has lived during or after his presidency. FDR has had a far reaching and vast impact on this country. He reached the world as the leader of the Free world in WWII in defeating Hitlers regime. One of the most horrific humans to have ever walked this planets surface. Talk about despicable! Hitler would have to look up to reach the scourge of the earth. Gandhi was the total opposite of Hitler. He was the ultimate peacemaker. Rooted against any sort of violence of any kind. People still look to his teachings as a way to live.

There isn’t a soul on this planet that could argue the impact of each of these individuals on the last 75 years or so. I mean their reach far outweighs anything one can imagine for one single person’s lifetime. I’d argue that FDR has had the greatest impact on this country of any president in history. I’d say that his presidency was more vital than any other president’s. Including Lincoln and Washington. Not that each didn’t face some unbelievably unimaginable challenges, BUT… FDR lead at a time when the first true global reign was entirely possible. I don’t think he was perfect but he lead this country through probably it’s greatest threat that we’ve ever known.

Peace truly get’s no love. Throughout history we don’t praise people who eat, drink and sleep peace to their fellow man. Gandhi believed that violence was not the way to settle conflict. Living lavishly wasn’t the way to a happy existence and that lavish living lead to conflict. I’m no scholar on his life but I know enough to know that he was right in that sense. Wealth can be a catalyst in conflict. His teachings are still felt across his globe. Not just from his native religion but a lot of religions and beliefs around the world teach what he walked.

Hitler, Hitler is a man who brings hate, and rage and depression to people all over this planet to this day. 70 some-odd years after his suicide. I don’t think there has ever been another human to have walked this planet that has affected so many people. Not just in his region but globally. He was a fruitcake! He was off his rocker. He thought he was a God. If people are honest his name strikes fear into sooo many today and will for years and centuries to come.  Unfortunately that’s the God’s honest truth.

As I was reading through this day in history happenings I started thinking about these three individuals. Their course in life is still effecting life today, posthumously. Their decisions, thoughts, personalities, likes & dislikes have in someway reached us all. In thinking about that I thought about who affect and what how my decisions, personality, likes and dislikes effect people.

Most statics tell us that in 50 to 60 years no one will have the slightest clue as to who we are or who we were. Sure it will be easier to research your families lineage then with the advent of the technology age. BUT, that only tells your name, your hair color, maybe what you weighted and what you liked on your spam sandwich. But it won’t tell the real person you were. It won’t have the same impact as knowing you. Even through time we’ve lost something of each of the aforementioned.  But the regular Joe working at the Piggly Wiggly meat counter…Chances are no one will remember your after you’re dead and gone.

It’s kinda of a sad thought to think that really my life is limited to just a few years in the grand scheme of God’s universe in time. We live for vapor and we’re gone. 2 generations from now we’ll be forgotten for the most part. Even entertainers and musicians for the most part will be forgotten.

When I started thinking about that I told myself I wanted a legacy. One that will last not 2 generations but I want to leave something lasting. Not like a name on a building or a highway or a bridge…Although, I’d love to have a bridge named after me. I’m talking about when people talk about me they talked about how I impacted lives. I want to be known today, tomorrow and posthumously for helping people change their lives and being a positive impact to the world around me. Those thoughts started circling in my head and thought to myself … Wait a minute, I do have that opportunity. It’s right here at my fingertips. It’s on the tip of my tongue. It’s in how I conduct myself … Not only in public but the privacy of my own home.

It then came to me that I have an opportunity to make, not only a generational impact, but an eternal impact. What I do daily has an impact eternally. Maybe not in the person sitting to my right but it could be to the person sitting to my left, or the person sitting behind me at a restaurant.

The truth of it all is that 50 billion people, give or take a dozen or so, have taken a breath upon this earth. Chances are there are just a handful of those people who have had a real impact in your life. In my life and it’s been the same since God whispered “Let there be light”. There is only one person who impacts us all eternally and that’s Jesus Christ. His legacy has been seen over a couple thousand years and it’s not going away. It’s actually growing with each second of our man made concept of time.  I know that Christ living in me will ensure my legacy to be a lasting one. Not only on this planet but when I walk in Glory. It’s amazing the impact you and I can have just knowing him and walking the way he walked.

Just something for all of y’all to ponder on this Monday afternoon.

Until the next slip of the tongue, Thank you for visiting “Gullible’s Travels”

Vietnamese New Year celebrated at Julian Smith Casino

1328152630 75 Vietnamese New Year celebrated at Julian Smith CasinoStaff Writer

Augustans celebrated the Vietnamese New Year on Sunday with a mix of traditional customs at Julian Smith Casino’s banquet hall.

The celebration included a fashion show where women showed off their traditional clothing, or ao dai. An ao dai is a traditional two-piece outfit made of a long shirt, reaching almost to the floor, over long pants. The shirt has two slits on either side that come up to the top of the pants. Some were covered in sequins and feathers showing many colors.

Because this is the year of the dragon, there was also a dragon dance that symbolizes good luck and success in the coming year, according to Lucia Nguyen, one of the organizers.

Toward the front of the room was a makeshift blooming cây mai tree, which is plentiful in Vietnam and blooms during the lunar new year. Because there are no cây mai trees in Augusta, one of the organizers cut down a tree and decorated it with little yellow flowers to make it look very similar to the real thing, Nguyen said. Hanging from the tree were red and gold ornaments with traditional new year’s wishes for prosperity, health and happiness, as well as fireworks, which were set off later in the night.

Also at the front of the room was a table for worshiping ancestors, Nguyen said. The table held a traditional bowl of fruit, some sweet rice cakes, candles and a group of yellow flowers from the cây mai tree. As guests arrived, they stopped at the table to thank their ancestors for creating them and left burning incense in a bowl on the table.

In Vietnam, children look forward to this holiday because there are not any presents on Christmas. Instead, they are given red envelopes of money from their adult relatives for the new year.

Renee Briscoe-Harris attended with her husband and two children, ages 1 and 5. This was their first Vietnamese New Year celebration.

“I’m very excited,” she said as her 1-year-old slept in her lap before the entertainment began. “I don’t think she’ll sleep through the fireworks.”

Karaoke was also performed, and children danced and sang to folk songs as people ate traditional foods like Bánh bôt loc, Bánh da lon, and Bún Thit Nuong.

In any respect, concert is the heart of the matter yet I saw a brightly colored latest music. These tickets are sold again, those who may wish to ask any price. Bob Seger formed the Silver Bullet Band in 1974. Do not miss the chance to see the performance of this orchestra, which is unique in the world! Beginning in Latin America, the tour premiered on November 15 in Mexico Metropolis. The show begins at 10:30pm. This can be very versatile. If the production is well planned and organized, the day will go exceedingly well. That would be impossible if it wasn't optimized to accommodate stream christmas music. Madonna is a force to be reckoned with in concert, and going to see her live is something you will always remember. It is expected to be in the limelight by November 10, 2009. How will it impact royalty free music? This means a lot to me, "If it doesn't kill me, it makes me stronger." The club hosts a fun mix of music fans, students, die hard locals and visitors alike. "One" was proceeded by a bit of stage theatrics of sounds and explosions reminiscent of a war zone. As mentioned already, your outdoor concert lighting should set the mood as well as illuminate.

Mose Allison doesn’t let it go to his head

1327863428 69 Mose Allison doesnt let it go to his head

“I don’t feel like I’ve made it for them to give me some award,” says Mose Allison, just before complaining about having to return to his home state of Mississippi next month.

Audre Allison, his wife of 62 years, promptly takes the phone from him and informs me that he’s being given the Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as a marker along the Mississippi Blues Trail and the designation of an official Mose Allison Day in Jackson.

“My wife knows about these things,” Allison sighs when she returns the phone. “I don’t particularly know ‘em until I have to.”

At 84, Allison has influenced scores of musicians. His greatest legacy may be opening up the blues’ racial divide, proving that a white man from rural Mississippi could hold his own in a traditionally black genre. “Well the blues police from down in Dixieland/Tried to catch me with the goods on hand/Ever since the white boy stole the blues,” he sings on “Ever Since I Stole the Blues,” one of his most famous songs and the title of a documentary about him.

Without Allison, there may have been no Van Morrison or Elvis Costello, two musicians who also straddle the blues/jazz divide and have recorded the Mississippi great’s material. Even rock bands like the Pixies, the Clash, and the Who cite Allison as a regular inspiration (the latter opened up their Live at Leeds album with a cover of Allison’s “Young Man Blues”).

“Peter Townshend, I’ve known him for years,” Allison says. “He came to see me in London, and a couple of years ago, I went out to his house. He wanted me to do something that I didn’t want to do, so that’s the way we left it. But he’s still a fan.”

Allison doesn’t elaborate, but the Townshend remark is probably a reference to the constant offers and requests to record and perform he receives these days. It’s a catch-22; as you age, people increasingly recognize your value and want you to produce while you still can. 2010′s The Way of the World, Allison’s first studio album in a dozen years, could very well be his last without some more gentle nudging from producers, friends, and family.

“People ask me if I’m still writing songs,” he says. “I’m not. Or it’s very seldom.”

What is it about Allison that draws musicians and listeners to him? Singer-songwriter Greg Brown even wrote a song about the saving grace of performing in a horrible, dingy club, summing it up with the title, “Mose Allison Played Here” (Allison recalls the California venue that inspired Brown as “a dump with a bad piano”).

When Allison plays, his words strike you first. There’s a subtlety to his lyrics, taking sly jabs at difficult women and Western culture with impeccable wit. His delivery and resonance come off with a coy matter-of-factness, while his no-frills, laid-back singing sets the mood for his jazz trio to lean back and enjoy the ride.

Then comes the piano solo. When Allison first set his fingers across the greater-88, America sat up and took note. This white boy from Tippo, Miss., could hold his own with the best in any jazz club around.

An English major with a philosophy minor from Louisiana State University, Allison’s lyrics added a depth of world-view beyond many of his musical contemporaries.

The title track from 1971′s Western Man looks at the arrogant attitude of colonizers and conquistadors coming to the New World, yet plays today like a treatise on modern American interventionism. “That was originally made in 1729, with ‘A Modest Proposal,’” laughs Allison. “Jonathan Swift wrote that about the famine in Ireland, and he proposed eating babies.”

Allison’s “Western Man” touches on the absurdity that Europeans might abandon the New World. “That’s the thing I took from ‘A Modest Proposal,’ that you propose something that nobody’s going to do,” he says.

That song and Allison’s entire six-decade discography are fair game when he heads to the Music Hall, performing with upright bassist Ron Brendle and other guests. It’s a short drive for Allison, who now spends winters on Hilton Head, splitting time between South Carolina and Long Island, N.Y. Both locales are a long way from the house where he grew up on an island in a creek in Tippo, but those roots are on full display in the songs he still plays, skillfully as ever.

Never get yourself in fix when it comes to the keyword research. In 1989, DiFranco started her own record company, Righteous Records.Early in her career DiFranco worked with manager Dale Anderson, a writer for the Buffalo News, who started another record label called Hot Wings Records, after the two parted ways, that released similar sounding material. Do we want to…? Do you recognize that perennial pop album? When he got to the end, he reached down into the crowd shaking hands and grabbed hold of my girlfriend's hand and smiled at her. I finally understand I can't have it all when it relates to concert. Seger supported Beautiful Loser with an extensive tour with the Silver Bullet Band, and whilst it did not make the album a hit, it provided a widespread grassroots following across the country. Booking a concert hotel meant I could enjoy all the hippy and freedom of the festival, come closer to Mother Nature, before going back to wash her all off.

Another trip to Detroit, another loss for Blues

1327666627 78 Another trip to Detroit, another loss for Blues

DETROIT • With a chance to leap over Detroitfor the top spot in the NHL standings, the Blues once again failedto respond to a Red Wings charge and fell 3-1 at Joe Louis Arena onMonday night.

The Blues have knocked off many of the league’s top teams thisseason and deserve their view from above. But after winning thefirst two games of the season series against Detroit, the club hasmelted at times in three straight road losses to the Wings.

On Monday, Detroit scored two second-period goals to take a 2-1lead, and after allowing the Blues to hang around, the Red Wingsadded a third unanswered goal with three minutes remaining to skateoff with the team’s 17th consecutive victory at home.

The Blues lost in regulation for the first time in their last 10games and goaltender Jaroslav Halak, who was perhaps the club’sbest player Monday, had his career-high seven-game winning streaksnapped and dropped his first decision in regulation in his last 15starts.

The development meant that Detroit remained in first place inthe NHL standings with 67 points, while the Blues left town bunchedwith three other teams for the second-most points in the leaguewith 64.

“Obviously these guys are one of those teams that you try tomeasure yourself against, and in this building especially, they’rea very good team,” Blues forward Jamie Langenbrunner said. “We’veplayed with them in stretches. But in the end, we’ve kind ofcrumbled when the boys got a little rough.

“The game gets turned up a notch and we take a while to catchback up to it. It’s caught us. We start reacting instead ofinitiating the play.”

The Blues mixed up their forward combinations Monday, but theonly offense in the game came from the fourth line, and on a playin which Detroit made an ill-advised line change.

After some strong physical play early by the Blues, ScottNichol converted a nice passing sequence from B.J. Crombeen andChris Porter, netting his second goal of the season, 9 minutes, 12seconds into the game.

But another second-period surge by Detroit, something the Blueshave seen in their last three visits to town, put the Red Wings ontop via goals from Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen.

Datsyuk’s 14th goal of the season came on the power play just 51seconds into the second period. The Red Wings were on theman-advantage as the Blues’ Chris Stewart drew an extra instigatorpenalty after fighting Brad Stuart with 20 seconds left in thefirst period.

Stewart of the Blues was responding to a questionable elbow thatDetroit’s Stuart put on the Blues’ Alex Pietrangelo.

Pietrangelo was leveled to the ice, and although he popped backup quickly, Stewart sought out the deliverer of the hit a fewseconds later. He received 17 penalty minutes all told, including atwo-minute instigator and a 10-minute misconduct, keeping him outof the game until about three minutes remained in the secondperiod.

Stewart said Pietrangelo is “one of the guys on our team thatyou have to protect. I have no problem doing that. That somethingthat comes first nature.”

After the game, Franzen said: “I don’t know if (the Blues) cantell the difference between a good hit and a bad hit.”

While sticking up for a teammate was natural for Stewart, whatcomes natural to Datsyuk is his skill, and he showed it off on thegoal that tied the score 1-1, his 14th of the season.

Datsyuk deked Pietrangelo on his way to the net and flipped thepuck backhanded and upstairs past Halak.

“You’ve got to give credit – it’s a good play,” Pietrangelosaid. “It happened. It’s just one mistake that you have to move onfrom.”

But the Blues didn’t move on from it.

Almost midway through the second period, Detroit’s JonathanEricsson put a shot on net that hit traffic in front. Pietrangeloslipped near the crease, allowing Franzen to wheel around untouchedand put a backhander past the oustretched left leg of Halak. Thatgave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with 11:08 remaining in the secondperiod.

The Blues had outshot their last eight opponents, but in beingoutslinged 28-22 Monday, the offense mustered only three shotsthrough the first 12½ minutes of the third period.

Still trailing only 2-1, Stewart had a chance to even the scoreon a breakaway, but Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard turned himaway.

“Facing an NHL All-Star,” Stewart said. “You’re obviously goingto have to bear down when you get chances like that. He definitelyplayed well tonight and he made some big saves for them.”

After a needless roughing penalty against Blues defenseman CarloColaiacovo with 3:35 remaining in regulation, Detroit put the Bluesaway by putting in another power-play goal. Niklas Kronwall scoredon a hard shot with 3:03 left.

“We had our chances when it was 2-1 in the third,” Blues coachKen Hitchcock said. “But you’re going to have to score more thanone goal on the road to win. It was (like) a playoff game. Theirbest players scored when they needed to score. We didn’t get itdone.”
