An up close look at the upcoming ‘Walking Dead’ video game

1329530245 93 An up close look at the upcoming Walking Dead video game

For those who weren’t aware, the hit comic turned mega hit basic cable program, “The Walking Dead,” is getting the video game treatment. Given how zombies are a staple of interactive entertainment, it’s easy to imagine something along the lines of “Resident Evil,” “Dead Rising,” or “Dead Island.” But this latest game to prominently feature the undead is a break from the norm.

Not much has been said about the game since its unveiling at last year’s San Diego Comic Con, which is why its makers, Telltale Games, have produced the following behind the scenes video, which includes conversations with the people involved in its creation:

For those who don’t have time to watch the 13-minute plus clip: things kick off with a sit-down with Jake Rodkin and Sean Vanaman, the two lead designers. They explain how the game is closer to the comic, which they view as “canon,” though fans of the AMC show will be able to follow along.

Players will assume the role of a new character, Lee Everett, who is a criminal on his way to jail, but finds freedom thanks to the zombie apocalypse. Along the way, Everett becomes acquainted with a little girl named Clementine, who has been orphaned due to the outbreak. As a non-playable, secondary character, she is intended to be a “lens that you can see your choices [within the game] though, and the story in general” explains Vanaman.

The two form a family of sorts, a theme heavily reinforced in the source material. Series creator, Robert Kirkman, and his involvement in the project was also discussed. When Telltale Games pitched their ideas, Kirkman was happy to hear his original narrative was not being regurgitated, even though certain characters are reused.

The game, or the first episode at least, takes place immediately after the outbreak, while the lead from the comic and the show is still in a coma (both follow Rick after he wakes up, and tries to cope with a world that has changed). Kirkman was also happy with Telltale Games’ emphasis on the story. As Vanaman states, “It’s not a headshot game” — referring to the fact that it’s not the usual zombie kill-a-thon.

The middle of the video, which contains massive spoilers from the comics, is actually the best part. It shows various members of the developmental team explaining their favorite parts from assorted issues, and in the process shows they completely understand and respect the source material, which is not often the case with many comic/movie/tv show adaptations.

The final segment deals with how the game will play, and that’s where things become vague. There has been little word on what gameplay will be like, and that hasn’t changed. Telltale Games is mostly known for producing adventure games. Two of their most well known creations are also based on pop culture staples: “Back To The Future” and “Jurassic Park.”

The former played like a traditional installment of the genre, in which the emphasis is on exploration, talking with other characters, and solving puzzles. The latter mixes it up by having action oriented segments controlled via Quick Time Events. Response to “Back To The Future” has been mixed at best, whereas ”Jurassic Park” has been universally panned by critics and players alike.

And just like those two games, the “Walking Dead” game will be episodic and distributed digitally. No release date has been given.

Synth-pop star on the rise Charli XCX

Whether or not you’re looking forward to an evening of red roses, chocolate and Edward and Bella-level romance tonight, you’ll have a new jam to keep you company. U.K. songbird Charli XCX has been making us fall in love since exploding online with single “Nuclear Seasons” last year, and today’s “Valentine” has us even more head over heels.

The track sounds like Lily Allen remixed by the xx, but a bit more awkward: “I wanted to kiss you, I wanted to kiss you, but I can’t get that close,” Charli sings in the squirmy synth-pop track. We’ve been there, girl! She and Adele should get together over a heart-shaped box of See’s Candies and dish on dumb boys. (Ummm, can that be our favorite new podcast already? “Love Lessons from Adele and Charli XCX”? And Ryan Gosling can be their first guest? Because we’d download the s*** out of that.)

Hear Charli XCX’s “Valentine” after the jump.

Despite the unrequited feelings, the upbeat “Valentine” is a sunnier-than-usual effort from Charli, missing the postapocalyptic synthesizers that cloud over “Nuclear Seasons.” Maybe she’ll dye her hair blue and make a big, silly pop album yet. Fingers crossed! Now if you’ll excuse us, this chocolate’s not going to eat itself. #caramelswag

How to survive the coming zombie apocalypse with Web-based dental software

1329278234 42 How to survive the coming zombie apocalypse with Web based dental software

By Andy Jensen

Vice President of Marketing

Curve Dental, Inc.

In early January of this year, I received an unusual request from the editorial team at DentistryIQ.com, who asked if I would be willing to research and write an opinion article concerning the coming zombie apocalypse. I found the request strange, as you might expect, because until such time that the zombie myth can be proven anything but myth, I’ll continue to perceive zombies as a fun tale to tell. I can only surmise that I was specifically asked to author such a bizarre paper due to my being a strong advocate of web-based dental software, which topic, when placed within the confines of any catastrophe, zombie or otherwise, provides fundamental advantages over traditional client-server software.

Adding to the peculiarity of this assignment is the title of the article, which conveys urgency and stating as fact that a zombie apocalypse is both a sure thing and imminent. I immediately set out to challenge these statements. I commenced a quick Google search of the key phrase, “U.S. government zombie apocalypse plan,” and was taken aback by the results.

The first item to appear in the search results is information prepared and posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal entity, that describes what to expect and how to prepare for the coming zombie apocalypse (see blogs.cdc.gov/publichealthmatters/2011/05/preparedness-101-zombie-apocalypse/). The CDC emphasizes mobility in the information they provide, which I will cover in more detail shortly. As you read on, you discover the CDC used the currently popular topic of zombies to garner attention to their recommendation that every family be prepared for emergencies. Being prepared for any emergency is good advice. And it appears the CDC doesn’t really care if the need for a backpack full of emergency essentials is due to zombies or earthquakes.

Further down the list is a news article quoting Rear Admiral Ali S. Khan, assistant surgeon general and director of the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response (see blogs.cdc.gov/publichealthmatters/2011/05/preparedness-101-zombie-apocalypse/) “The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen. In such a scenario, zombies would take over entire countries, roaming city streets, eating anything living that got in their way. The proliferation of this idea has led many people to wonder ‘How do I prepare for a zombie apocalypse?’” says Admiral Khan. When pressed further to describe the U.S. government’s preparations, Admiral Khan stated he was not at liberty to discuss what he called “secret plans” to handle the apocalypse.

In Florida, Okeechobee County has an official zombie apocalypse emergency plan (see okeechobeeeoc.com/Annex%20Z.pdf), which details how the county’s various teams, from the sheriff’s department to the chamber of commerce, will deal with the event. Other municipalities have followed suit; the City of Wellington created the Zombie Apocalypse Plan, otherwise known as ZAP. Says Council spokesman Richard MacLean, “…a proven method to eliminate a zombie is to hurl a vinyl LP at its head so that it pierces the skull.” (See stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/5179942/Wellingtons-zombie-apocalypse-plan.)

Apparently, the notion is not as outlandish as one may think. T.E. Sloth and David Wong summarize the science behind the threat (see cracked.com/article_15643_5-scientific-reasons-zombie-apocalypse-could-actually-happen.html). According to Sloth and Wong, scientists have identified five plausible ways wherein zombies could be roaming our streets:

1. Brain parasites. Think mad cow disease with this one and you can imagine people running around with behavior akin to zombies.

2. Neurotoxins. According to the authors, certain types of poisons slow bodily functions to the point that you could be declared dead. Victims are then brought back under drugs that leave them in a trancelike state.

3. Virus. A manufactured or naturally altered virus, released into society by a rogue terrorist group, could alter human behavior to a zombie level.

4. Neurogenesis. The science of regenerating dead cells by using technology developed through the exploration of stem cells is gaining ground, apparently. So imagine injecting a serum into a corpse that would allow you to regenerate certain organs, like the heart and lungs.

5. Nanobots. These microscopic, self-replicating robots, in this instance, would first kill a host and then manipulate the host’s movements by way of electrical stimulus to the nerves.

In essence, Sloth and Wong submit for consideration that a zombie apocalypse is only slightly less plausible than other types of popularly accepted apocalypses, such as a nuclear or viral apocalypse.

Of course, Sloth, Wong, and a host of other zombie doomsday forecasters are not without their detractors. Certainly, for every zombie enthusiast, hundreds, if not thousands, scoff at the mention of a coming zombie apocalypse, calling it absurd. Were I to take a guess, nearly every reader of this article is of the “scoff” and “absurd” category. But, the topic is fun and, as mentioned earlier, zombies have come on strong lately in the pop culture scene. That being said, every dentist can benefit from taking a few moments of light reading to assess their own readiness in the face of disaster, whether they face danger from fire, theft, flood, wind, or mad zombies. And in that spirit, let us continue to discuss the coming zombie apocalypse.

Due to Hollywood’s recent efforts to bring zombies to prime time television, some clarification and logical assumptions are necessary before this discussion can be carried any further. The first of these is that the zombie apocalypse will not forever alter the current social framework. While millions will die, and millions more will mourn for lost fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters, a cure will be found and post-apocalyptic society will not be too much different from pre-apocalyptic times. While a cure will be found, even so, the world’s brightest pathologists will require time to discover, develop, and perfect a cure. During that time, society will push forward as best they can in safe zones established by the government or enterprising private organizations and individuals. Babies will still be born. The IRS will still collect taxes. And dentists and their teams will still be necessary to advance the cause of good oral health.

One key attribute of every potential surviving dentist will be their ability to be quick on their feet. Being able to evacuate to a safe zone in a most expeditious manner is critical. Doctors who have ignored the many warnings of impending doom and who have glossed over the many benefits of the cloud will be at a great disadvantage. Traditional client-server software will be an anchor around their necks when the first orders for evacuation are given. These poor souls will still be trying to pull cables and fit their servers in the trunks of their cars when the first wave of zombies ambles around the block, looking for fresh meat. Alas, they will either become infected themselves or serve as another main course for the zombie hordes.

On the other hand, doctors who have moved their practices to the cloud will simply usher their families to their waiting minivans and proceed directly to the nearest safe zone. Given the known fact that every safe zone is equipped with computers and Internet access, these doctors will need nothing more. They will simply access a computer, enter a username and password, and gain immediate access to all of their patients’ data. Sadly, much of their time will be spent changing many a patient’s status from active to deceased, or they will create a new status labeled “zombie.”

A side note here: The apocalypse will increase the ratio of patients per dentist for the very reason discussed earlier. Many dentists will fall victim to the zombie stampede while trying to remove servers from their practices. Surviving doctors will find they will need to maximize efficiency when treating patients in the safe zone in order to keep up with the number of patients seeking treatment. Fortunately for them, web-based dental software that has been designed for a web interface will typically allow the doctor to enter information faster than with traditional client-server software.

Random fate will save the lives of a handful of doctors who were using client-server software when doom set into their communities. For whatever reason, they were able to lug their servers to their cars and they were able to reach a safe zone before the gates were sealed. These doctors will seek the help of experienced IT professionals to help them access the data on their servers. Unfortunately, one of the quirky ripple effects of the zombie apocalypse is that IT pros will be difficult to find. And even if you were able to meet one in the safe zone, their time would be prioritized to maintaining the existing infrastructure within the safe zone. As a result, many of these doctors will be forced to power up their servers on their own and muddle through the setup or restore process on their own. Those who succeed will be unable to connect workstations to their server due to a scarce supply of hardware capable of running their dental software or because they forgot to bring installation disks with them.

Unfortunately, these doctors will spend more time working with their servers to access patient information than with their families who may be traumatized and in need of comfort. The long-term effects of this trauma, if not immediately addressed, will lead to tens of thousands who will suffer from the effects of PTSD.

The role of IT professionals during the zombie apocalypse is an interesting discussion. The governments will declare a state of emergency, which will allow them to suspend all civil liberties and direct and control commerce and transportation as deemed necessary. As a result, governments will order IT professionals to data centers across the country to maintain these facilities. While many of these facilities lie outside safe zones, strong perimeter security, which is standard protocol for most professionally managed data centers, will prevent zombies from entering the facilities.

Web-based dental software companies will have a leg up on their competition. From any safe zone they will be able to continue development on the software. New features will be required to accommodate the consequences of a new reality. Patient addresses will become, for a season, unimportant; instead, doctors will want to be able to designate in which safe zone a current patient resides, and to what living pod the patient has been assigned within that safe zone. Changes to the software can be made quickly to account for these social changes. Because the software is web-based, dentists don’t worry about installing updates and then tweaking their systems to work with the new upgrade.

Another benefit to the doctor using the cloud is they won’t have to worry about data backup and protection. With the cloud, their data is housed in a professional data center managed by experienced IT professionals. Safe zones will be crowded and busy places. Doctors who were able to evacuate to safe zones with their servers and workstations will be under constant watch to make sure the hardware is not kicked or disrupted by the congestion of people, animals, and vehicles. They will also have to figure out how to back up their data and maintain security over that backup at all times. Given the massive disruption and instability the apocalypse will bring to society, certainly the last thing any dentist will want to worry about is data backup.

Training won’t be a concern for the doctor on the cloud. Videos and a knowledge base will provide them with the information they may need to solve a particular problem or to train a replacement team member (sadly, not every member of your team will make it to the safe zone). Technical support will continue as well. The cloud-based doctor will be able to submit support tickets within the application and receive the assistance they may require via e-mail, if telephone service is unavailable.

In a nutshell, a web-based application provides the doctor with an immediate and dependable business continuity solution in the event of a natural disaster or apocalyptic event similar to the forgoing. Doctors and staff can learn more about a real life business continuity case study by visiting curvedental.com/zombies. Although this case doesn’t involve zombies, it does illustrate the inherent advantages of web-based dental software over traditional client-server software with regard to business continuity.

I think there’s something said about persistence… For those of you who know me, you should know that I have been a Stepmania player for a long time. Stepmania is a rhythm based Dance Dance Revolution simulator that you can play on pad (like DDR) or on the keyboard (for much harder songs). I have been playing since early highschool and I have been on and off in college (mostly because this game is a HUGE time drain).

Throughout my Stepmania playing career, I have gotten pretty damn good, but I have never been able to beat a certain Dragonforce song “Fury of the Storm”. For those of you who aren’t metalheads out there, Dragonforce is notoriously known for their ridiculously fast solos and drumming (they recorded their demo completely on a drum machine, because no musician could keep up when they sent it in!) I’m not exactly sure which learning principle came into play for me when I beat this level, but I think the fact that I took a brief hiatus from the game actually changed my perspective on how to tackle several of the levels.

I didn’t Fraps the victory (I got a C, but I still beat it! Thaor, the player in the video, got a AAA, which is rather inhuman), but here’s a youtube video showing the level. Just FYI: This is at least 6x as hard as it is on Guitar Hero!:

My forearms hurt pretty bad right now.

Pop Culture’s Digital DaVinci Sam Spratt Talks Star Reactions To His Work

By Zachary Swickey

When digital painter Sam Spratt was a spry art college grad in June 2010, he immediately became the (first) in-house staff illustrator for popular media conglomerate Gawker. Articles boasting his work were getting plenty more hits than ones carrying boring stock photo images. Before long, Spratt was getting more commission work than he could handle and had to say goodbye to Gawker and venture out on his own. (But trust us, he’s doing just fine!)

Since his departure, Spratt has diversified his portfolio – creating merch designs for herbal enthusiast and rapper Wiz Khalifa, as well as album artwork for rockers Foxy Shazam and metal-heads Trivium. Spratt has no problem with tricky imagery, whether it’s a Renaissance period piece for a private client or his collaboration with Rovio Mobile’s super-mega-smash-hit “Angry Birds.” It seems he’s up for any type of visual challenge.

Quite the fan of pop culture, Spratt has painted multiple interesting likenesses of various characters, including Ron Swanson from “Parks and Recreation,” quirky Dwight Schrute of “The Office,” Kanye West, a breathtaking portrait of “2 Broke Girls” star Kat Dennings and a hilarious take on Troy and Abed of “Community” in a fake movie poster for “Inspector Spacetime.” Even his personal self-portrait is stunning to say the least. We are simply floored by the visual creations Spratt manages to create and with Twitter as an outlet – some of his creations have gone viral. Rainn Wilson is even using his portrait as his Twitter avatar.

Spratt is currently based in Brooklyn, New York, and was kind enough to chat with us about his interesting craft and provide us a look into his digital art domain.

MTV: It took me a moment to realize your works were digital paintings when I first discovered you. I know you were not originally trained on digital media, so how was that transition?

Sam: Not too hard, actually. In college I first learned oil painting under the technique of Peter Paul Rubens – studying every step of his process. The transition to digital touched on many of the same concepts: ground color, sketch, grayscale painting, cool and warm color additions and final color/detail-work. It’s a different medium … a cleaner one, but it can be treated almost identically.

MTV: You’re only 23 and you’ve already got quite the clientele list. Was it a nerve-wracking experience to be Gawker’s in-house artist at only – what, 21?

Sam: It was terrifying. I walked in there with this massive ego that my professors had helped build, and was almost instantaneously knocked down 10 pegs and it was like starting all over. The crew there was great in both bringing me down to earth and challenging me to work my ass off. It was a one of a kind experience that I wouldn’t change in any way despite its wealth of difficulties. Getting put back in reality and being demanded to learn and grow in a very real environment with very quick deadlines was the best thing that could’ve possibly happened to me after four years of people telling you almost nothing but candy-coated pleasantries.

MTV: So several of your most interesting pieces feature characters from some of our favorite comedy television shows (“Park and Rec’s” Ron Swanson and “The Office’s” Dwight among the many). Did you do these pieces just for your own personal fun?

Sam: Thank you. I love television and keep it going while I work during the day. I could have a busy as hell 14-hour day of painting and blow through an entire season of a show in the background, so they’ve become a weird part of my productivity. When I started doing them, they were for fun, but I treat all of my pop-culture/non-client pieces as one of the most important parts of my business. Ron Swanson, Dwight and Inspector Spacetime each had pretty large viral-pickups and sent dozens of clients my way and granted me some nice exposure. I treat them like my advertising – except they are also some of my favorite pieces to make.

MTV: How did “2 Broke Girls” star Kat Dennings like her portrait painting? We’re big fans of her and the show.

Sam: She’s this unusual archetype of beauty and dark humor that many seem to respond very well to. She seemed very happy with it and apparently “likes the voodoo that [I] do”.

MTV: That Foxy Shazam album art work you did was incredible as well as the Wiz Khalifa merch design. Do you find yourself getting more music-related commissions? Are there any musicians you’re itching to paint?

Sam: Much appreciated. I’ve worked with a few. Foxy Shazam being a personal favorite as those guys are both amazingly talented and complete and total characters in their appearances. I keep my toes in the water in the music industry as I definitely have my share of interest there and would love to contribute album covers to some of my favorite artists. If I can score a cover for Broken Social Scene and Kanye West in my lifetime, I’ll consider it a success.

MTV: Do you know if Kanye has seen his portrait you did of him?

Sam: I have no idea, and if he did, he wouldn’t be Kanye if he acknowledged it. His appeal to me is in his utter honesty with how completely self-absorbed he is. No one wants a humble or appreciative Kanye. Those who value him, value his god complex – which, when it comes to music, I think he has largely earned.

MTV: I constantly refer to him as “King Midas” in my write-ups.

Sam: Perfect.

MTV: Have you thought about or been approached by film studios for design work? I can’t help but think you could’ve lent a hand with Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Prometheus” or a Pixar flick.

Sam: I’ve been approached by a few; some haven’t been things that have excited me, others I can’t talk about quite yet. That said, I want to see a renaissance in illustrated film posters. Things are getting pretty generic out there.

MTV: That actually leads me to my next question… Would you like to tackle movie posters someday? You seem like a worthy candidate to take the torch from Drew Struzan and bring it to the digital world.

Sam: Every time someone draws a link between myself and Struzan, I get absurdly nervous – the man is an illustrative deity and someone I couldn’t possibly ever match in technical achievement. One of the nicest and most pressure inducing things said to me was by Ryan Kalil of the Carolina Panthers, who made a similar parallel. I can only hope to even be in a league similar to Struzan. That said, the genre he tackled is one I would love to visit and approach in my own way. I mean, I love photographers, but for a movie poster – studios/the ad-agencies behind them have to hire a photographer, a crew, sets, retouchers, compositors, etc. Big movies easily have six figures poured into some of these posters dispersed across the many facets that go into them. Why not hire just one painter?

MTV: We hear you, man. Right there with you. Lastly, you don’t have divulge any names, but have you done private commissions for any big-time celebs? Any star struck moments there?

Sam: Sadly, the nature of private commissions is that they remain private, but I have definitely had my star struck moments. What I’d really like to do is to eventually segue my painting into advertising/promotional tools for television. I find the industry hugely fascinating and though I have the benefit of a job I already love every second of it that supports me well, the closer I get to other industries I’m passionate about, the bigger the results seem to be.

Usually, you may do both with concert and This has come from a myriad of hours of working and researching. It is marvelous how kids mustn't face a plain topic like this. In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, MPSF, no. 2-ranked UC Irvine dominated and swept UC San Diego 3-0 at the Bren Events Center on Jan. 21. The Anteaters won their first MPSF match of the year, improving their record to 1-2 and 5-2 overall.

Senior Carson Clark had a team high 13 kills and sophomore Jeremy Dejno had eight kills. Both Clark and senior Dan McDonell had three service aces.

Sophomore Daniel Stork had a team high 34 assists and freshman Michael Brinkley had a team high seven digs.

“They are a great team,” Clark said. “We struggled a little bit in the second game but we came back in the third and did what we needed to do and play our style of volleyball so that was good for us.”

McDonell had back-to-back aces in the first set to take the lead. UCSD could not catch up to UCI’s lead as they were getting dominated in the first set.

UCI had one error in the first set, which really helped them to take the first set 25-19. The Anteaters had a lot of momentum in the game from great kills, blocks and service aces.

The Tritons did much better in the second set tying the game at 11-11. However, UCI remained consistent in knocking down kills and creating blocks that they got back in the lead.  UCI’s teamwork and confident play helped them win the second set 25-19.

On the third set, the Anteaters quickly went on a seven-point run, including back-to-back aces from Clark, making the score 8-2, which forced a UCSD timeout.

The Tritons made many costly mistakes; they just could not get the ball over the net, made many unforced errors and seemingly lost focus as the game progressed.

UCI kept getting great kills and it seemed like UCSD could not find the answer to stop or block their kills. The ’Eaters crushed them on the third and final set 25-12.

The Anteaters beat the Tritons in every category: kills, errors, assists, service aces, service errors and team blocks.

“Our offense was probably the best,” Coach Speraw said. “We hit almost .500, so anytime we do that, you know that we are doing well offensively. In a lot of ways, we could have improved in the scoring side of things. Also, we obviously need to keep watching video and keep on getting better at some of the things we are doing defensively.”

“A 65-year-old man who was knocked off his bicycle by three teenagers on a Pennsylvania trail shot two of them, killing one, police said according to reports.

The Reading Eagle newspaper said the wounded teen, 16, was taken to hospital and the third, aged 15, was taken in for questioning and was later committed to a youth center.”

I am often criticized for focusing on bad news, today I`m trying to balance the scales. If this story doesn`t brighten your morning, check your heart, I think it has stopped beating.

A 65-year-old gentleman is riding his bicycle, exercising and enjoying the scenery. Suddenly he`s knocked off his bicycle, and assaulted by three cowardly teenagers.

The surviving teens should be charged with attempted murder, the old man could have died when he was knocked off his bike. The three savages weren`t content to knock him off his bike, they beat the old guy when he was on the ground trying to regain his senses.

Usually in this kind of a scenario, the victim is rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, and the perps receive a slap on the wrist, if they are apprehended.

But like I said this is a feel-good story with a happy ending, this time one of the perps is shot dead by the victim, another ends up in the hospital in serious condition, and the other punk is arrested and committed to a youth center.

The elderly gent was released by police after they consulted with a District Attorney; I told you this story would brighten your morning.

Moral of this story: Get a license to carry a concealed weapon, and shoot to kill if your life is in danger.
