Soul revivalists Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings bring their Motown-infulenced sounds to Birmingham’s HMV Institute next month.

The nine-piece band play Birmingham HMV Institute on Thursday, March 8, 2012. Tickets, priced £19.50 are available from https://agmp.ticketabc.com/events/sharon-jones

On April 6, 2010, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings released their fourth album, I Learned The Hard Way.

Steeped in the gilded and gritty sounds of gospel, soul, and funk, this nine-piece group continues to electrify fans, disc jockeys, critics, record collectors, and bloggers the world over with their heart-felt sound.

Most recently, the band has been invited by fellow soul enthusiast, Prince, to open for him at his shows in New York City, Paris, and Ghent. At each show, Ms. Jones and the Dap-Kings were asked to join Prince on stage for collaborations during his set.

This is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest and is a welcome breath of fresh air. But, most of all, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music.

Sharon Jones has collaborated on stage, in the studio and on film with David Byrne, Rufus Wainwright, Denzel Washington (The Great Debaters), Lou Reed, Booker T & the MGs, Michael Bublé and Phish.

The Dap-Kings have recorded for Al Green, NAS, Amy Winehouse, Wale, Mark Ronson, Daniel Merriweather, Robbie Williams and Bebel Gilberto.

The A.R Rahman concert on October 11th exceeded all expectations and believe us -the expectations were high! Despite having some wonderfully rocking songs like "Livin' On The Edge" and "Shut Up And Dance" among others, "Get A Grip" didn't quite compare to "Pump" which I felt was irresistibly unhinged rock and roll, but it certainly wasn't boring. Kia may be best brand for skinflint car owners

1329515826 65 Kia may be best brand for skinflint car owners

The boxy Kia Soul is among the winners in a new study assessing total cost of ownership.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

There are plenty of bargain-priced cars, trucks and crossovers, but that doesn’t always mean they add up to a good deal.  Smart shoppers know there are lots of ways costs can quickly get out of control when you own a car, from insurance to fuel economy to maintenance and repairs.

And that’s why a new study from Kelly Blue Book is focusing on what really matters: the total cost of ownership.  And there, the data-tracking website concludes, Kia is the clear standout as the top brand among all manufacturers when the entire ownership experience is tallied up.  Audi was the No. 1 luxury brand when measured by total cost of ownership.

“Car shoppers should take the time to compare vehicles on their consideration lists to fully understand the financial implications involved with cost of ownership,” said Juan Flores, director of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book. “While a vehicle might be less expensive up front, the cost of fuel for that model, insurance and other expenditures could make it the less appealing choice for their wallet in the long run.”

Kia scored big because of the high fuel economy, “greatly improved quality” and rising trade-ins values, said KBB researchers, pointing to products like the Soul crossover, Optima sedan and Sportage SUV.  Audi was a standout because of its low depreciation and solid mileage in a segment normally not known for great fuel economy.  Audi had a number of high-value models, including the small A3 wagon, the A4 sedan and Q5 SUV.

The new KBB Total Ownership Awards included a few surprises, notably the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, which narrowly bested the Nissan Leaf battery-electric vehicle in the electric car category.  Other studies have found consumers turned off by the Volt’s initial price tag – about $40,000 less a $7,500 federal tax credit.  But considering the Chevy plug-in’s minimal energy and maintenance costs and likely trade-in value, KBB concluded the five-year total ownership cost will come to only $40,629 compared to $42,089 for the Leaf.

That’s only about $4,000 more than the anticipated total ownership cost for the compact Nissan Juke, at $36,627, the winner in the compact crossover category, and a little more than $2,000 over the $38,476 ownership cost for a Hyundai Sonata, which scored tops in the midsize car segment.

Competition was especially tough in the subcompact segment, KBB noted, with only $400 separating the top three models, The Nissan Versa squeaked out a victory with an anticipated five-year ownership cost of $29,252 – the lowest of any model in the study.

The Audi A5 provides a good example of how a car that costs more up front may actually prove to be the long-term bargain.  While KBB reported it is more expensive than many competitors in the luxury segment, it had a five-year, $5,000 advantage over the nearest rival at $56,908.

Similarly, the Jeep Wrangler might be more expensive than offerings like the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Nissan Xterra, but the domestic model was the clear winner in the midsize sport utility category, with a five-year projected cost of $41,764.

The most expensive vehicle to own that still won its segment?  That was the Lexus LS460, which won the high-end luxury car segment with a five-year cost of $90,234.  The KBB survey cited the premium sedan’s low up-front costs, minimal depreciation and low insurance and repair costs.

Manufacturers typically try to hype hybrids by focusing on their fuel economy.  That may be a significant advantage, but there’s also a sizable up-front premium for the added technology. And that means they aren’t necessarily the bargain they might seem.  The Honda Insight, the winner in the hybrid category, at $32,884 over five years, was less of a bargain when compared to traditionally powered options, including the Nissan Versa and the slightly larger Kia Soul, at $31,417 the winner in the compact car class.

‘Soul Train’ Host Don Cornelius Dead

1329231428 23 Soul Train Host Don Cornelius Dead

“Love, peace and soul.” Don Cornelius would sign off with those words after every episode of his famed dance/music program “Soul Train,” and now the television show host and producer is dead.

On Wednesday morning (February 1), Cornelius was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Mulholland Drive after police responded to a shooting call, the LAPD confirmed to MTV News. According to TMZ, Cornelius was found with a gunshot wound to the head. Sources told the website that Cornelius’ death appears to be a suicide, however the LAPD could not confirm this information as the investigation is still ongoing.

Police discovered Cornelius’ body at around 4 a.m. PT on Wednesday and he was later taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was 75 years old.

Love, Peace and “Soul”: Don Cornelius Remembered in Photos

A former radio disc jockey, Cornelius created, wrote and produced “Soul Train,” a popular dance/music show which spotlighted soul, R&B, and later, rap music. “Soul Train” was patterned after Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand,” but it helped to shine a light on black artists who many times didn’t get the recognition they deserved. James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson all appeared on the show as well as more contemporary artists like Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Ludacris.

“Soul Train” was most famous for its dancers who would show off the newest moves while partying to the latest hits. The “Soul Train” line, where dancers would line up on the left and right of the dance floor, allowing for one performer at a time to shimmy down the aisle, became a staple in American pop culture. Cornelius would go on to host the show for 22 years, between 1971 and 1993. He eventually handed over the reins to new hosts. The show ultimately went off the air in 2006.

Striker caught in what looks like a particularly rubbish rap video

In Britain the press are ready to pounce in a frenzy of indignation the moment any of our footballers are snapped doing something, or someone they shouldn’t be; whether it’s proudly showing off willies on the internet, having unapologetic sex with a friend’s ex-partner or making giving it gun-fingers while rambling into a microphone.

Imagine the number of ambulances that would have to be called to Fleet Street, every day, if Brazilian striker Vagner Love, South American football’s premier sex advocate, ever journeyed over to these shores. He’s recently been making waves in Brazil’s newspapers after being snapped on a night out at an underground rave. In the middle of a slum. Accompanied by hordes of rock hard-looking drug dealers. Carrying AK-47s. And anti-tank rocket launchers.

A hidden camera captured Love enjoying a night out after scoring two goals for Flamengo in a 4-1 win in February. On arriving at the party in Rochina, the biggest slum in Rio de Janiero, the striker was escorted inside by rifle-toting guards, followed by the undercover cameraman who managed to get shots of more guards inside and someone casually strolling around with an AT-4, a Swedish-made anti-tank rocket currently being used to blow shit up in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Despite being fingered associating with some known drug dealers, Love was unfazed when confronted about the incident:

“I always go to these parties, I see no problem with it. I usually do social work in some of these places, so I always attend. I’ll never stop going to my origins, my roots.

Hot 16: SoulBounce’s Best Songs Of 2011 » SOULBOUNCE.COM

1328746627 61 Hot 16: SoulBounces Best Songs Of 2011 » SOULBOUNCE.COM

Oh 2011, where, oh where, did you go? It seems like just yesterday that we here at SBHQ were lamenting the slow start to the year and hoping that the remainder would make up for it. Well, we definitely weren’t disappointed with the vast majority of what we heard. These past 12 months have brought us new music from old faves and a slew of new faves to join them, and our list of SoulBunce’s Best Songs of 2011 reflects that. If you’ve been following SoulBounce this year, then some of these selections should be no-brainers, but there are few surprises to be had. In the past, each editor has posted their own year-end top 10 list of songs, but in an effort to streamline the process the staff of SoulBounce has combined all of our eclectic tastes together into one Hot 16. We may or may not have had a Love & Hip Hop style brawl to narrow this list down to just 16 songs, but not to worry because a list of honorable mentions is included as well. Without further delay, see what tunes made our Best Songs of 2011, and stay tuned for SoulBounce Honors 2011 where we’ll crown one of these as Song of the Year.

Beyoncé feat. Andre 3000 & Kanye West: “Party” [Listen][Buy]4 will be known as the album that showed cracks in Beyoncé‘s facade. Yes, it was moderately successful, but not the full-on juggernaut of her previous album, 2008′s I Am…Sasha Fierce, due mainly to her first single “Run The World (Girls)” having a soft impact on the charts. But the mama-to-be shouldn’t fret much. Even with 4 not being a runaway hit, it still produced bangers like “Party.” The Kanye West (and Consequence)-produced track turned up the late ’80s/early ’90s R&B charm as it bumped its way into our hearts and trunks. Add to that a rather naughty verse from the ever-elusive Andre 3000 and you have a song that had us at “swagu.” — D-Money Cee Lo Green: “Bodies” [Listen][Buy]From its creeping “Drummer Boy” fade-in to its simmering, drawn-out ending, atmosphere remained the number one priority with this song. With its sinister string/horn sections and its dark, animated video, Salaam Remi and Mikael Colombu together contributed to the single strongest and most impactful effort on Cee Lo Green‘s Bond-esque concept album by helping Green blur the line between secret agent and super villain. — Remi Elle Varner feat. J. Cole: “Only Wanna Give It To You” [Listen][Buy] I don’t know if it’s the slick bass, the sampled drums, or the slight rasp in Elle‘s voice, but I loved “Only Wanna Give It To You” from the moment I pressed play. The song just captures the first blushes of infatuation so well. Even J. Cole‘s feature works here, although the song would be just fine with or without it. Though I wasn’t too crazy about her subsequent song, “Refill,” I have a feeling that Elle will be one of the artists to watch for in 2012. — D-Money Eric Roberson feat. Phonte: “Picture Perfect” [Listen][Buy]How can one go wrong with these two SoulBounce darlings on the same track? While “Picture Perfect” isn’t the first time we’ve heard Eric Roberson‘s rich vocals blended with the undeniable flow of Phonte, this song held something extra special. There is an effortless chemistry here that translates (picture) perfectly into the song that is unabashedly swoon worthy. One of the highlights of my year was the arrival of Mister Nice Guy, and this track let me know that the album that what was to follow would not disappoint. — Peachy Kween Fatima: “Mind” [Listen][Buy]For me, Fatima is one of the most under-recognized voices in modern soul music despite collaborating with heavy-hitters such as Dam-Funk, Funkenstein, and Floating Points. Her Follow You EP was the strongest non-album of the year, in my opinion, and the introspective “Mind” was the icing on a very satisfying cake. — SoulUK Goapele: “Play” [Listen][Buy]Goapele is no stranger to getting sexy on record (“Romantic” anyone?), but she seriously upped the ante with the first single from Break of Dawn. “Play” literally roared onto our playlists and married a bump-and-grind ready synthesized track with well-placed fingersnaps to Goapele’s come-hither vocals. The lyrics kept it pretty PG, but the sentiment was totally rated R. — Butta Jill Scott feat. Paul Wall: “So Gone (What My Mind Says)” [Listen][Buy]Kelly Rowland‘s “Motivation” may top most year-end lists as the Jam du Sexe of 2011. It was a formidable contender, to be sure, but even that cut was unable to smolder with the longing of JR Hutson‘s spacey synths and Randy Bowland‘s mournful, country-wailing guitars on Jill Scott and Paul Wall‘s “So Gone (What My Mind Says).” Throw in Jill looking stunning in a sultry video that perfectly complemented the song’s languid simmer, and we have a clear winner. This honor has more meaning than the GRAMMYs in the past decade, anyway. — Remi Kelly Rowland feat. Lil Wayne: “Motivation” [Listen][Buy]Oh, Kelly. When she dropped this bedroom banger in April, our hopes for her album Here I Am rose much higher than they should have. While the album left a lot to be desired, “Motivation” itself was a hot and steamy reminder of what Kelly could do when the stars aligned for her. It even works to her favor that the rapping gremlin Lil Wayne assists with a freaky rap that enhances the song’s sexiness. Her name definitely won’t be coming up on any album of the year lists, but with this one Kelly will at least be a permanent fixture on many GTD lists for years to come. — D-Money KING: “The Story” [Listen][Buy]The story behind this “Story” is a shining example of social networking at its finest. In the blink of an eye, the three ladies of KING found themselves on the tip of everyone’s tongues and fingertips with just a few simple clicks, it seemed. Sure, it would be easy to attribute the overnight buzz to the overwhelming industry co-signs that suddenly flooded Twitter timelines and blogs everywhere, this one included. But then that would be denying the sheer goodness of this inspirational song, totally written, produced, and recorded by the ladies themselves. “The Story” made folks sit up and take notice of KING for all the right reasons.– Ivory Marques Toliver: “Deep In My Heart” [Listen][Buy]Marques Toliver was one of the break-out talents of 2011, combining his soulful vocals with his equally impressive violin skills. The soaring “Deep In My Heart” was reminiscent of Maxwell, or even Marvin Gaye, and has us on high alert for a full album. — SoulUK Omar & Zed Bias: “Dancing” [Listen][Buy]Omar and Zed Bias had my hips at hello the moment I heard the beat to “Dancing.” It’s as if Bias took a dash of dubstep, a splash of soca, and a heaping helping of house, put it all in a stew pot and let it cook while Omar stirred it up with his always amazing vocals. This song is a non-stop workout — one that I don’t mind working up a sweat to. — Butta Rahsaan Patterson: “6 AM” [Listen][Buy]It was virtually impossible for a track featuring both Rahsaan Patterson and Lalah Hathaway not to make this list. With its irresistible groove and just the right blend of soul, sex, and sweetness, “6 AM” provided that soundtrack to the morning after the night before. — SoulUK SBTRKT feat. Little Dragon: “Wildfire” [Listen][Buy]Not only was 2011 the year that found Little Dragon gaining new fans and a lot of mainstream coverage, but it was also year that found them branching out. Such as their collaboration with masked marauder SBTRKT on the song “Wildfire.” The track had a dope beat, and Yukimi Nagano‘s singing gave it just the right amount of bounce. — Butta The Throne: “Ni–as In Paris” [Listen][Buy]Much like the album that spawned it, “Ni–as in Paris” is easy to write off at first, but grows on you like a fungus with the roots of an oak tree. The Hit Boy beat sounds like generic (and worse, dated) Dirty South fare that’s far beneath the prodigious talents of Kanye and Jay, but damn if these two don’t go for broke with their respective flows. And with a stash of hilarious one-liners (and a brilliantly random-yet-meta cameo by Will Ferrell), its status as the CrazyFunnyAmped party record of 2011 is secure. — Remi Zo! feat. Anthony David: “Playing Your Game, Baby” [Listen][Download]It’s very rare that a cover can evoke an emotion in me like the original can, but Anthony David and Zo! taking on Barry White‘s “Playing Your Game, Baby” struck a chord. Not only does Anthony resurrect Barry’s laid-back vocal styling from the original, but Zo! lays down the musical groundwork to sheer perfection. The result is a remake just as worthy as its predecessor and a shining example that real music does still exist. — D-Money Zo! feat. Eric Roberson & Phonte: “Marzipan” [Listen][Download]Consider “Marzipan” the best unearthed gem of 2011. Until producer-extraordinaire Zo!, Erro, and Phonte put their talents to this remake, I was wholly unfamiliar with the song’s originator, Eric Tagg. All of that changed once hearing Eric’s honey-dipped lead vocals coupled with the chord changes that ebbed and flowed like water. Digging up the 30-year-old original, I was surprised to hear that it was just as silky smooth as its redux. Though it would have been easy to the song’s original sentiments to become muddled and bogged down with contemporary sensibilities, in the able hands of this trio, it’s a match made in remake heaven. To know this song is to love it, indeed. — Ivory Honorable Mentions: 1-O.A.K. “Rewind”14th “Hide Yourself”Adele “Someone Like You”Amy Winehouse “Half Time”Anthony David “As Above So Below”Benny Sings “Big Brown Eyes”Beyoncé “End of Time”Cee Lo Green feat. Stylish, sustainable safaris with African soul

One of the highlights of many guests’ stays at Chole Mjini Lodge is a wander through Chole village.  Even though the island is only 500m by 800m there is plenty of opportunity to get lost in the island’s many winding paths so we always recommend to get one of our English speaking guides and they can also acquaint you with Swahili life, and more likely than not introduce you to their mother, show you their house and meet their friends on the way – this also ensures there’s a cultural engagement; an exchange of ideas which both the guide and guests enjoy.  The best time to amble through the village is in the morning, before it gets too hot and while there’s plenty of community activity.  There’s so much to see a tour can take anything from an hour to four!  Not only are guests able to visit 2000 roosting fruit bats at Popo Park, a bat sanctuary developed by the villagers to protect this endangered animal, but also hear about the history of the island and walk through the ruins from the days of the Mashatiri Arabs as well as visit the boat yard, where they build bespoke dhows with no power tools or even measuring tapes – its fascinating to watch this age-old tradition and talk to the fundis.  There is also the wonderful work achieved by the Chole Mjini Trust Fund – the Primary School, Chole Hospital, Adult Learning Centre and my favourite project the Kindergarten.  When you arrive at the Kindergarten you are welcomed with open arms…in fact 60 open arms…wonderful happy faces smile up at you, and you are able to see the real benefit of the project – allowing these children not only to receive one nutritious meal a day and checked for childhood diseases but also learn that education can be fun and teaching the Montessori principles from such a young age ensures when they get to Primary School they are ready to learn.  As a Chole Women’s Society project the initiative was also designed to allow the women on Chole some much needed time off from motherhood and even develop their own sources of revenue. As well as the good work done by the Chole Mjini Trust Fund, all Chole Mjini Lodge guests pay $10 per person per night which is donated to the village, in 2011 that was just under $12,000.  Guests frequently hear of the charitable work done on Chole before they arrive and kindly bring pencils, pens, colouring books, educational aids and toys for the village – which is received with great appreciation.  And here is a photo of such a guest – Lygery with her new Chole friends, the photo was taken by Yiannis Orfandis.  We cannot thank guests enough for this kindness and especially considering the 15kg weight limit on aircraft in Tanzania it means even more.  Lygery & Yiannis also took the opportunity to send me photos of their stay, I print these photos out and give them to the people – Choleans love having their photo taken – so I encourage as many guests as possible to do this. Chole is a wonderful community which offers a fascinating insight into Swahili life – we had a guest stay recently who we called “Nick The Lost” because every day he would wander into the village and inevitably get lost but everyday he made another new friend who helped him find his way back to the Lodge – I think that says it all!

I have many faith in concert. They showed me some amazing reports. I'm getting back to the basics now. If you're persistent, I assure you streaming music will pay off. Ticket prices would be generally higher than the usual and the prices as the ticket holders may sell at any price they wish taking advantage of a free market situation. Nowadays the orchestra includes 50 violins, 10 violas, 10 cellos, 11 doublebasses, 9 clarinets and 6 cimbaloms, and some of its members are particularly important: Oszkar Okros is considered as the best cimbalom player in the world, and in the orchestra we find also the descendants of some gypsy musicians dynasties, such as Lakatos, Lendvai Csocsi, Boross, and Berki. Listen to free music online is easily forgotten. This should however be your last resort once you have exhausted all the other possible avenues. What he told me wasn't all that surprising. Scratch My Back yet again features only orchestral instrumentation you can discover no guitars, drums, or electronic parts which can be standard attributes of Gabriel specifics. As they say, "You win some, you lose some." provided that this mechanism is the same for both free downloadable music and music online listening. You might have to get gangs excited. They have a preliminary tryout which is often among the more fascinating parts of the program due to some of the odd songs as well as contestants encountered there. South Pacific is not only one of the greatest musicals of all time, featuring such popular songs as 'Some Enchanted Evening', 'A Wonderful Guy' and 'I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair', it also provides meaningful commentary on racism and prejudice that still applies to today's society.

With concert, it is all about the quality of music streaming sites and not the quantity. This is a good way to lose respect for making more of it. Winning a number of awards including two World Music Awards, their recordings have gone gold and platinum in many countries, including 8-times Platinum in the Netherlands. I will, however, give you a concert that continues a flavor for a radio music. During their last performance at Billy Bob's, Cory Morrow had the show recorded for a live CD which now has a release date slated for January 2012. Lead and rhythm guitarists Joe Prunera & Kevin Hughes over-the-top stage presence as they moved through the crowd with uncontainable fervor. Bob Seger formed the Silver Bullet Band in 1974. It is your wake up call. Although what I have been saying about the concert appears to go back and forth between the extremes of musically jarring and oddly comfortable, these, it appears, are entirely appropriate sensation combinations when listening to experimental compositions. The specific concert ukulele and also the soprano ukulele generate diverse sounds as well as tones as a result of their size as well as their strings' placement. They didn't sound much more optimistic in relation to free downloadable music and so, like my roommate puts forth, "All good things must come to an end." Even though Etheridge had the crowd enraptured from the start, it took until the third song, I Want To Come Over, before the audience sing-alongs began, which was to be as expected as the more prominent songs, such as the later sung Come To My Window tend to lead to greater audience participation.

The Soul Rebels seek to ‘Unlock Your Mind’

In early December, Metallica, the world’s most popular hard rock band, celebrated its 30th anniversary over four nights at the intimate Fillmore in San Francisco. The surprise opening act? New Orleans’ own Soul Rebels.

10490694 large The Soul Rebels seek to Unlock Your MindRick OlivierThe Soul Rebels celebrate their new CD at Tipitina’s on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012.

Each night, the Soul Rebels kicked off the celebration by marching through the crowd with brass band arrangements of “Enter Sandman,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Sad But True,” “Creeping Death,” “One” and other Metallica classics. During each head-banging, all-star finale jam, they kicked brass on “Seek and Destroy.”

“They had never dealt with a brass band,” Soul Rebels snare drummer and co-founder Lumar LeBlanc said of his new buddies in Metallica. “They accepted us as a band. They didn’t want us to come in with ‘When the Saints Go Marching In.’ They saw us as, ‘Ya’ll can actually do this Metallica music.’ ”

Redefining what a brass band is and does has been the Soul Rebels’ modus operandi for 20 years. Look and listen no further than their new CD, “Unlock Your Mind,” their first to be released nationally on Rounder Records.

Longtime Rounder producer Scott Billington was behind the boards for “Unlock Your Mind.” His vast Louisiana resume includes classic albums by Irma Thomas, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, the late Johnny Adams and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

“Scott really cares about New Orleans music and the future of it,” said LeBlanc, who, along with Rebels trumpeter Marcus Hubbard, has lived in Houston since Hurricane Katrina. “He recorded some of the greatest brass band pieces ever.”

With the Rebels, “he wanted to make a piece that would stand the test of time but also show the innovative scope of where brass band music is going.”

To that end, various Rebels rap/sing on several tracks. Cyril Neville emotes on the title track. They re-imagine the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This,” which LeBlanc and two bandmates first encountered as members of the St. Augustine High School Marching 100.

LeBlanc’s “I’m So Confused,” with its Zigaboo Modeliste-inspired rhythm, came out so well as an instrumental that the planned vocals were scrapped; instead, Galactic’s Ben Ellman solos on baritone sax against Erion Williams’ tenor.

Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli wrote and guests on the funky “Say Na Hey.” The Rebels graft a go-go groove to the Lee Dorsey hit “Night People.” “Unlock Your Mind” concludes with a fresh take on “Let Your Mind Be Free,” the Soul Rebels’ previously recorded signature song.

Although the musicians still refer to themselves as the Soul Rebels Brass Band — surging brass instruments, robust tuba and skittering snare drum remain the core of their sound — the new album’s cover does not include the “brass band” tag.

“You don’t say ‘the Rolling Stones Rock ’n’ Roll Band,’ ” LeBlanc said. “You just say ‘the Rolling Stones.’ But I still want to keep ‘brass band’ because it leads to gigs that other bands can’t do.”

Such as, say, open for Metallica. The two bands’ seemingly disparate paths first crossed during a taping of the BBC2 TV show “Later … With Jools Holland” in London. Soon thereafter, the Rebels received an invitation to take part in Metallica’s anniversary festivities.

Throughout the week in San Francisco, LeBlanc and his bandmates mingled with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Kid Rock and members of Green Day, with whom the Soul Rebels shared a stage at the New Orleans Arena in 2009.

They hung out and rehearsed at Metallica’s vast warehouse headquarters and private studio. LeBlanc was blown away by Metallica’s work ethic, love of music, professionalism and limitless resources. Drummer Lars Ulrich tried out the Rebels’ trombone and tuba, and invited LeBlanc to take a turn on his drum kit. James Hetfield shared tips on singing.

The experience was “such a blessing,” LeBlanc said. “I couldn’t believe it. Those guys are so nice. They’re real people.”

The Rebels are now managed by Ted Kurland, proprietor of a prominent, Boston-based booking agency, and former Tipitina’s talent buyer Adam Shipley. The result has been a “big upswing” in touring, LeBlanc said.

“I wanted that Dirty Dozen (level of) traveling. I finally got it. Like they say, be careful what you wish for. It’s a whole lot of work. If you’re not mature mentally and physically, it will perish you.”

Following Saturday’s “Unlock Your Mind” CD release party at Tipitina’s, the Soul Rebels head out for a three-week tour with Galactic. Along the way, they’ll likely field requests to showcase their take on Metallica music. “Enter Sandman” is a particular favorite.

“People look for it,” LeBlanc said, “They’re like, ‘Play that Metallica!’ ”

The Soul Rebels can, and do.

DiFranco has expressed political views outside of her music. I feel as if I might have to take a break from my disjointed ramblings concerning christmas music streaming. You have to love what you do. The man however continues to dance/sway...whatever you call it...in front of you and your spouse.? It is incredible how cliques can't follow a transparent responsibility like this. 2008 LensDoc (Kirsti A. A lot of people love buying the tickets online because it goes a really long way in ensuring that they are able to get the tickets without having to actually spend a lot of money. I'm attempting that again since that was gutsy. It wasn't plain dangerous. I may be having a wrong-headed notion germane to free online music. Them and us – Bobby Campbell (Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic)

1328125049 44 Them and us – Bobby Campbell (Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic)

This weekend’s trip to Loftus Road brings TNS the opportunity to look back at the career of a man whose career took in both clubs, step forward Bobby Campbell!

Robert was born on 23rd April 1937 and signed for Liverpool in the summer of 1954 and progressed through the youth ranks at Anfield, finally making his first team debut on 15th September 1958.

In total he made 25 appearances for Liverpool scoring twice.  He also featured in 13 matches in the legendary Bill Shankly’s inaugural season as manager of the club.

His playing days at Anfield came to an end due to injury and he found himself at Springfield Park playing as a part timer at the start of season 1961/62.  He made two league appearances without scoring whilst with the Blues.

He also scored twice for Latics in the FA Cup, his first coming in a second qualifying round game at home against Prescot Cables which resulted in a 1-1 draw.  His other goal came in a third qualifying replay against Altrincham, also at Springfield Park, which Latics won 3-1.

In the winter of 1961 he decided to return to the game in a full time capacity and he joined Portsmouth for whom he went on to play 64 games, netting twice before his injury finally won the battle when after playing just five games for Aldershot in 1968 his career finally did come to an end.

He began his coaching career in 1966 at Portsmouth and then, after a spell at Loftus Road with Queens Park Rangers, he went on to work under Bertie Mee at Arsenal as first-team coach following the resignation of Steve Burtenshaw who given up his position to become the manager of Sheffield Wednesday.

Campbell, who had been a coach at Craven Cottage following the resignation of Bill Taylor, then became manager at Fulham in 1976, after his former boss Alec Stock was sacked.

In May 1982 he succeeded Frank Burrows and became the manager of Portsmouth for whom he won the Division Three title, before being replaced by Alan Ball in May 1984.

He then spent a year in Saudi Arabia, becoming the manager of  Al Qadsia in Kuwait and then, towards the end of the 1987-88 season, he  was appointed assistant to manager John Hollins at Chelsea eventually becoming caretaker manager following Hollins’ departure from Stamford Bridge in March 1988.

Hollins had endured  a torrid four months in which he failed to record a single victory and Bobby was unable to buck the losing trend and Chelsea were relegated via the relegation play-offs (remember them?) that season.

His appointment as manager proved a good decision by the club’s board, as he then guided Chelsea to promotion as Second Division champions with a haul of 99 points. Not content with that Bobby then guided the Pensioners to a 5th place finish in the First Division, their highest league placing (at the time) since 1970.

His time at Chelsea ended after a spell as chairman Ken Bates’ personal assistant.  Ken, a former Wigan Athletic chairman, had bought Chelsea for a penny in 1982!

Bobby’s last post in football was as manager of Al-Arabi in Kuwait, who were the bitter rivals of his former Kuwaiti club  Al Qadsia.

Concert has one complication. What to bring: 1) Folding chairs 2) Jackets 3) Beverages! I had to offer a lively debate on the topic wherever this could be yours for the taking. There is no better time than now. She was also honored for giving hits back to back throughout her wonderful career. Why shouldn't one be allowed to analyze all about that theory that does really put, in plain English, country music? Janet Jackson is bringing her Number Ones, Up Close and Personal Tour to such cities as Houston, Toronto, St Louis, Denver and Universal City. Plus, hiring a limo for the next big rock show can make you and your friends feel like part of the band for the night. Newcomers keep asking me how to build a better listen to youtube and I'm not the sort of person to use gimmicks. Though it is the cost where the real benefit of course. However seriously, as an artist personally, I cant help however appreciate that technology brings not just convenience for our company and communication but can also be employed in the performing arts. For a full three hours it was nothing but non-stop rock from Dave Grohl and his bandmates drummer Taylor Hawkins, guitarists Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel and touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee. I'm just a raving fanboy of streaming music sites. It is spectacular how folks can avoid a confused avocation like this. I've discovered concert was really worth this.
