The development of steel-frame construction made it possible to build tall, leading to the skyscraper boom, while light-steel framing is being touted as the sustainable answer for residential and commercial construction

Steel-frame construction refers to a technique whereby a building, usually a tall tower, is built by means of a skeleton frame comprising vertical steel columns and horizontal I-beams in a rectangular grid to support the floors, roof and walls, which are all attached to the frame. The façade of the building, ranging from stone to reinforced concrete, glass or even sheet metal is also anchored to the frame.

Light-steel framework, on the other hand, uses thin sheets of galvanised steel as a building material for rough framing in commercial or residential construction. The sheets, which are roll-formed into the final profiles for framing, are zinc-coated or galvanised for protection against oxidation and corrosion.

Story continues below Advertisement

The speed of this construction method, coupled with the perceived sustainability or ‘green’ benefits of steel, has resulted in an increase in light-steel framework construction for a range of applications, from houses to factories and office blocks.

It can also be used for partitions within buildings and for framing interior walls.“The focus on sustainable building design is creating a fundamental shift in the way that new projects are approached by architects and engineers.

As they search for material solutions that provide energy and cost efficiencies, steel is available to help them meet the highest sustainability standards,” commented Mark Nowak, president of the Steel Framing Alliance of the US.

Steel is, of course, the most recycled material on the planet. All steel products contain recycled steel, while steel framing, in particular, has a minimum 28% recycled content.

This means that, as a building material, steel framing is completely recyclable – a major advantage at a time when the construction industry is looking to reduce its carbon footprint and optimise its resource use.

“A typical 185.8m2 home [in the US] requires about 40 to 50 trees, but with steel, only the equivalent of about four scrapped automobiles is needed,” highlighted Nowak.

Compared to many other building materials, steel is routinely collected in aggregate quantities from construction and demolition sites, and recycled into new steel products.

The Steel Recycling Institute of the US reports that the recycling rate of structural steel products in the US is 98%, the highest rate for any building material. In addition, steel is recognised by all major ‘green’ building rating systems and standards, including ASHRAE Standard 189.1 and the USGBC’s LEED programme, which is widely applied in the Middle East.

In terms of the latest developments, Nowak said the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) calls for the increased use and thickness of continuous insulation on the exterior walls of cold-formed steel buildings.

In response to this, the steel industry has developed innovative systems that effectively eliminate or reduce thermal bridging. These include steel panels embedded in foam insulation; ‘warm wall’ design, where steel is placed entirely inside the insulation layer; and more cost-effective ways to use continuous foam insulation.

“With so many challenges to the building codes, designers and manufacturers would do well to take a whole building design approach to the energy package, using readily available simulation tools,” commented Nowak.

“Increased interaction between different professionals involved in the design process would ensure greater efficiencies. By getting involved in the early stages of a project with structural designers, steel framers and manufacturers could ensure a high-performing building, without having to add exorbitant costs.”

There are various companies involved in the steel framework sector in the Middle East. Framecad Solutions is a New Zealand company that set up shop in Dubai in 2008 in order to promote this construction method in the region. As an engineered product, meaning it is manufactured and assembled in a factory before being delivered to site, steel framework is becoming more popular due to its perceived benefits and advantages.

“There are many standard sizes used in the industry, but one can use any size or shape, depending on the application,” said Nader Elhaji, regional director for steel-framing supplier Framecad Solutions. “It is an engineered product, and therefore there are no applicable limits on the building shape or size.” The greatest economic viability is derived from structures up to nine storeys, added Elhaji.

Speed, efficiency and cost-savings are the main benefits. “Time-saving is one of the biggest advantages,” according to Kirby Building Systems. “Steel is 50% faster to erect than conventional concrete buildings.”

Other suppliers concur. “The structure is typically built using CAD/CAM systems, with panels and trusses assembled off-site, which means as much as a 35% reduction on construction costs, and a higher speed of construction than traditional systems,” explained Genesis Manazil Steel Framing CEO Maged Mostafa.

Mostafa pointed out that steel framework also adds an element of predictability to the construction process, in that quality and output can be controlled more carefully. “This enhances the confidence and certainty that a project will meet all of its targets. The quality of work is also not entirely dependable on the quality of workmanship, or on weather conditions, as 80% of the activity is carried out in an indoor, controlled environment.”

Critical to these benefits are the steel frames themselves, as well as the technology used to fabricate them. Steel frames are lighter, cost-effective, faster to erect and durable. Perhaps more importantly, the latest technology has automated the steel frame construction market. It has reduced the need for skilled labour that the market required previously, and has sped up the engineering, fabrication and erection processes.

“The more we can utilise steel in smaller structures, such as residential and light commercial buildings, the more we can save on materials used and overall construction costs,” said Mostafa.

A potential disadvantage is that steel framework is not suited to all projects, depending mainly on the size in question. If a project is particularly large, it could mean that the steel framework required cannot be manufactured in a controlled factory environment, which could affect quality.”

1329310643 32 Metal Blast! » » Maiden UniteD Wacken (video) Interview Written by Max   // August 20, 2011   // Comments Off

If you haven’t heard about Maiden UniteD, I guess I can’t blame you. Although it’s a made up entirely of top-notch musicians, and covering one of the best (if not the best) metal bands in history: Iron Maiden, they’ve been around for less than a year so it’s understandable if you are not too familiar with them.

Now, even if you’ve heard of this band you probably thought “Another cover band that can be added to the dozens of others who had the same idea“. But here’s the thing: Maiden United is different. They didn’t limit themselves to simply play Iron Maiden music, they reinvented it. Just like Apocalyptica did with Metallica, re-arranging their songs to be played with cellos, Maiden United re-arranged Iron Maiden music to make it work with acoustic instruments. And believe me, it works.

The popularity of the band has risen dramatically, despite their short existence. They released their first (and so far only) album less than a year ago, and they’re already playing in festivals such as Download and Wacken Open Air. It’s here where we meet them.

Joey Bruers (bass, Up the Irons), Ruud Jolie (guitars, Within Temptation) and Anneke van Giersbergen (vocals, ex-The Gathering) sat down with us at Wacken. Check the interview below, and watch the video at the end of the page!Metal Blast: Well, first of all, thank you very much for giving us this interview. Since I know you have a busy day ahead of you, let’s start from the beginning. Joey, you started Maiden UniteD with musicians from several band, all of them with different backgrounds and styles. How did you choose them?Joey: For starters, Ruud has been a very good friend of mine for many years, both as a person and as a musician. We worked together a lot in our early days, when we made music together with our first bands, but then we took our separate ways. Maiden UniteD offered a good place to unite again, and that’s how he and I started to re-arrange the songs for this project. When we came to the point of looking for a singer, we thought that we wanted to have both a female and a male vocalist. We looked for the best there was and we found Damian Wilson for the male vocals and we thought that Anneke would be perfect to do the female vocals, doing a guest appearance in the album. I think it was just one phone call, right?Anneke: It was!Ruud: One phone call… and thousands of Euros!Anneke: Of course. Believe that!Ruud: Really, really expensive.

MB: Since we’re talking of you, Anneke. Were you an Iron Maiden fan?A: Yes, absolutely! I also have an older brother who owns everything by Iron Maiden, so I grew up with their music.

MB: How was your reaction when you were offered this possibility of covering Bruce Dickinson?A: Well, Bruce Dickinson is one of the best vocalists in our genre. I felt that the fact that they asked me to do was like a vote of confidence that they thought I could do it. I think I did an alright job, but it’s a different sound for female vocals, so I had to make it my own. Also the lyrics, they’re these long  lyrics, you have to dive into them, in a way different than that of a listener, to get into them and to do it in a different way. You can’t copy Bruce Dickinson, so you have to make the song your own.

MB: Ruud, you’ve been the guitar player for Within Temptation for quite a few years now, and you’re also working on your own solo project, “For All We Know”. With all of this work, do you see Maiden UniteD as a one-time thing, or as a permanent project?R: Well, maybe it started as a one-time thing, but it turned out to be just too much fun to do it for only one album. Joey and I are already thinking about the next album, sorting out the songs we want to do, slowly starting to make some demos… I know that the guys who did the artwork for the album are already thinking about what to make for the new album. It’s too soon to tell anything more than that..Anyway, to answer your question, it’s a permanent side-project, as far as I’m concerned.

MB: Anneke, in your case, you’re listed as a “guest musician”. Will you stay as a guest or as a full member?A: I have no idea!R: Perhaps nothing!A: Perhaps I will do their wardrobe, bring them drinks and arrange interviews.J: Let’s start today!A: Really? No more singing!?

MB: Why did you choose to start off with a cover of the whole Piece of Mind album, instead of simply covering songs from different albums?J: I really don’t have an answer for that. I have no idea at what point we decided to do the whole Piece of Mind album. I do know that it’s one of my favorite albums, it has The Trooper, Where Eagles Dare, Revelations… which we covered on the demos. But I really don’t know when we decided to do the whole album.Even though I don’t know when we made that decision, I think it was a good decision.

MB: Well, since we’ve talked about your future album. Do you think it will also cover a full Iron Maiden record?J: Well, like Ruud said, we really don’t it yet, but I think it’ll be more of a compilation album. We really don’t know yet, since we just decided to do another album, if possible… so what it will be and when it will be out is something I don’t know.R: The thing is that we started out by re-arranging all kinds of Iron Maiden tunes, so I know we still have a lot of great arrangements lying on the shelf and maybe we’re going to record them for the new album… but as Joey said, maybe it’s a little  too soon to tell.

MB: Just as Apocalyptica, Maiden UniteD didn’t simply cover songs, but actually re-invented them. Do you think that, just like them, you may eventually start writing your own material?R: I don’t know…  Right now it’s just rearranging Iron Maiden songs. We also compare Maiden UniteD to Apocalyptica (they’re much bigger than us of course) but they must have been laughing their assess of when they started… and look where they are now. They never expected to grow like this and, to be honest, we never expected to be playing at the Wacken Open Air Festival only 9 months after the release of our first album, because initially it was just for fun. Joey and me have been best friends for over 20 years, we used to play a lot of music together but, as he said, we went our separate ways… initially this was just for fun, to release an album and just play some small bars, but then it started to grow a little, and we played some nice festivals like Downloads in the UK 2 months ago, and now Wacken and there will be another album… We have some more nice things planned, who knows where this will end?

MB: Anneke, in your solo career you’ve adopted a style that is definitely from that of a band like Iron Maiden. Have you heard any reactions from your fans regarding this new project?A: Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of reactions but the people who like my music, but they also like music by The Gathering, they are in the rock and pop scene, so they like Iron Maiden as well. I think that it’s not so farfetched, since Iron Maiden is all about melodies, emotion and good lyrics so there’s some common ground there.

MB: Who’s in charge of rearranging the songs into acoustic pieces?J: Ruud and I made the arrangements, we made demos for the songs and then we went into the studio. Of course, everyone can fill in their own parts, but “officially” they were arranged only by the two of us. This is how we work, just the two of doing the arrangements.

MB: What’s in store for the band in the near future?R: Maiden United is going to take a break now because Mike Coolen (drummer) and I are going to start touring with Within Temptation next week. I do know that in January we have 2 gigs with Maiden United in theaters in Holland, and we’re planning a theater tour in Holland for February 2013, although we’ll try to release the new album before that. Touring-wise, we don’t know yet what will happen, because we’re all very busy with our other bands and other projects. This is still a side-project, but a very serious side project, so we really try to make it work with our other bands. There’s definitely going to be another tour, but we still don’t know when.

Special thanks to Barbara, Maiden UniteD’s TM, who made it all happen!

Megadeth tops Gigantour’s metal roster at Tsongas Center

1329257827 39 Megadeth tops Gigantours metal roster at Tsongas Center

Formed in the ashes of a messy breakup between Dave Mustaine and his Metallica bandmates, Megadeth came together in 1983 as a bit of a rebound move on the speed guitarist’s part. Yet, nearly three decades and numerous lineup changes later, Megadeth keeps steamrolling ahead.

In fact, time seems to have healed all wounds as Megadeth shared the bill with Metallica at concerts in Europe in 2010 and twice last year in the United States (Indio, Calif., and Yankee Stadium in New York City).

And the band keeps cranking out top-selling albums, with last year’s TH1RT3EN debuting at No. 11 on the Billboard album chart. It was also the first album in a decade to feature fellow founding member Dave Ellefson on bass guitar.

Megadeth will play tracks from that album as well as its massive catalog next weekend when it headlines its Gigantour at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. The lineup also includes the legendary Motorhead, Danish rockers Volbeat, and Italian prog-metal masters Lacuna Coil.

While they never had mainstream success (1992′s “Symphony of Destruction” reached the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, but peaked at a modest No. 71), they are mainstays on rock radio stations like WAAF (107.3 FM), where you can hear such 1990s classics as “Angry Again,” “Trust,” “Almost Honest” and “Use the Man.”

We spoke to Megadeth drummer Shawn Drover, who has been in the band since 2004, about the band’s staying power, the new album, touring with Motorhead, and the constant lineup changes.

“Our fans are really hardcore. They support the band and buy the record,” Drover says. “Sales have dropped across the board in the entire industry, so you’re not selling as much as 15 years ago, but nobody is. We seem to still do very well and sell a lot of records. Without our fans, we wouldn’t be going on tour. We’re still here because we still have fans that care about us. We don’t take that for granted.”

Drover believes that TH1RT3EN holds up very well against the Megadeth catalog. “Time will tell whether fans think TH1RT3EN or Endgame will be one of those classic albums. That comes along with time. I don’t think about it. We put out a new record, but you can’t sit back and wonder what fans will think. We hope fans will like it as much as the last one and like it for many years to come. You always try to do the best you can. Nobody goes in and thinks, ‘Let’s make a record that sounds like 20 years ago.’ You have to go in with fresh ideas. You can try to repeat yourself, but it never seems to work. It’s better to stay current, as long as you stay within parameters of what you and your fans like.”

Ask Drover about playing with Motorhead, and legendary frontman Lemme Kilmeister, and his voice perks up. “We’ve been wanting to tour with them forever. To make it happen is unreal. Lemme’s a legend. That’s all you need to say,” Drover said. “The longer you’re in the game, the more those opportunities are going to arise. It’s our 28th year as a band. It’s cool that we’re so viable this many years into it.”

When it comes to the lineup changes, Drover says he understands why fans might have a problem with the constant shuffle of band members. “I’ve seen people come and go. My brother was in the band for three years. He left. That was difficult. But there’s always a reason for it. Because you play music and because fans become attached to a certain era or lineup of a band, (they’re upset) when you leave.”

We also spoke with Andrea Ferro, co-vocalist of Lacuna Coil, a few days before he left his home in Milan, Italy, for the United States to begin the Gigantour. The tour begins Jan. 26, a few days after Lacuna Coil releases its new album, Dark Adrenaline, on Tuesday. “It’s a great way to start the year,” Ferro said.

To my ears, Lacuna Coil is a cross between Rush and Evanescence, but Ferro thinks they fit well with Megadeth. “We have a good mixture of heavy metal melody and atmosphere,” Ferro said.

The band’s biggest hit remains 2005′s “Heaven’s a Lie,” a staple on heavy-metal and alternative-rock radio, but Ferro is excited about the new album. “We have this fire inside that pushes us to reach new highs in our music, but, to be honest, everything we’ve achieved in our career in the last five years is something we never expected to accomplish.”

Ferro remains hungry for more success, but says just being able to write, record and perform music for a living is worth the sacrifice. “We do it because we love music. It is also our job and we make a little money at it, but we need to keep doing it.”

The journey continues next week in Lowell.

Gigantour, featuring Megadeth, Motorhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, comes to the Tsongas Center in Lowell on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $49.50 and $39.50 and are on sale now at TsongasCenter.com, by phone at 866-722-8780 or at the Tsongas Center box office.

At Home: Pekin couple trade in hustle and bustle of city life

1329163037 13 At Home: Pekin couple trade in hustle and bustle of city life

John and Debbie Dacey have built a home in suburban Chicago, and they've built a home in rural Pekin on 10 undeveloped acres.

They know the difference in quality, cost and time it takes to get a job done between the two areas.

But try explaining those differences to people who know nothing but neat beige or gray homes on identical manicured lots in crowded suburbs.

Those differences hit home for the Daceys shortly after their Pekin home was completed – a 1 1/2-year process, by the way. Visiting friends from Chicago admired the house, but hit a mental roadblock when they noted the still-unlandscaped, four largely cleared acres surrounding the house. Clearly, the landscapers needed to get on it, the friends politely suggested.

Nope. John would be doing all the landscaping.

"My friends said, 'Well, you are going to sod this, right?' They just shook their heads," Debbie said. "That's their mentality. You bring sod in. You bring landscapers in. Up there, everything is done for you. Everything is hired out."

The Daceys didn't set out to live on land that required drilling a well and was considerably "below I-80," as their friends call it.

John Dacey was a high school teacher, coach and referee in the Chicago suburbs. A widower, he met Debbie at March Madness in Peoria. He was reffing; she was working the stats table.

They married in 2003. They had a house built in the suburbs, but they also wanted to buy some land as an investment. With the Chicago area financially out of reach, they looked at the area where Debbie had grown up, in Pekin.

In 2005, Debbie, also a teacher, went to her husband with a radical proposal.

"She said, 'I've got a chance to get my old job back in Peoria,' " John said. "'How would you like to retire?'"

John didn't exactly retire, but he did quit teaching. He and Debbie already had a pretty good idea of what they did and did not want in their next home.

"We didn't want a box. Up in Chicago, all those homes are boxes," Debbie said.

Before they could settle on house plans, they had to clear the land. The brush was unbelievably dense.

"This tree out here – it's a burr oak, probably 400 years old," John said. "You couldn't even see it was here."

"I bought him a chainsaw for Christmas, and away he went," Debbie said.

John did more than clear a building site. He used his time, and his experience from his first career as an environmental engineer, to design their dream house.

"I did the sketches. I built a scale model," he said. "It fits the contour of the property."

John also laid the tile and wood floors, finished the trim and doors, and did all the painting. Outside he built a deck, bolstered the house site with a retaining wall that's at least 300 feet long, and did extensive landscaping, primarily with rock.

He also did all of the work on the finished, walkout basement.

The spacious house is situated to maximize the view. The house's main area is sunny and open with 18-foot ceilings. Two smaller rooms jut off of it, a step-down great room at the front and a breakfast nook at the back.

The couple wanted to plan for any eventuality, so the hallways are wide. The doorways are all 36 inches.

The first-floor master bedroom is spacious and well appointed. But the most luxurious part of it is the bathroom, which is 15-by-13 feet.

Each also has plenty of personal space. John has a first floor office where he works, scheduling referees for basketball games in the Chicago area. Debbie has most of the space over the garage, which is largely unfinished, for sewing, projects and storage. She even has a "Christmas closet."

Two more upstairs bedrooms and a family room in the loft at the top of the stairs provide plenty of other space to spread out or have house guests.

Much of the house is furnished in antiques. Evidence of Debbie's hat collection also is abundant. A wooden ladder in the great room holds hats on every step. An antique oil lamp on the dining room table has an antique felt hat tossed on it.

Working on the house tapped a creative side to John he'd never explored. He's found a hobby in restoring old metal siding pieces, tin ceiling squares and fireplace covers and selling them at antique shows. Samples of his work add to the personal touches in the home they designed.

Life is slower in Pekin, but the majority of the inevitable comparisons are favorable. Instead of sitting in traffic stopped on an expressway, they sit on their deck and watch the wildlife.

"Last year, we saw a fox in the backyard," Debbie said. "We see coyotes. On Sunday, I saw a bald eagle fly by. He was beautiful. It just went right by the house.

"It's a whole 'nother world, and we love it."

Nickel Allergy and Sterling Silver

1327457832 37 Nickel Allergy and Sterling Silver

Did you know that over 600,000,000 people undergo from nickel allergy? Did you know that nickel allergy is on the rise?

As allergy to nickel turns into more and more widespread people are typically left looking for an alternative metal to wear. One metal that is typically proclaimed to be nickel free is sterling silver. But is it actually secure?

On the whole, Sterling Silver is 92.5% silver, and 7.5% of “one thing else”. The vast majority of the time that “one thing else” is copper. Copper is nickel free and has the fitting balance of colour, sturdiness and value to make it the number one selection by uncooked sterling manufacturers. However… tin, boron, lithium, germanium, zinc, platinum, indium and (to a much lesser extent) nickel can all be present in that 7.5%, too!

Another downside is that the formulation for sterling silver is just not static; it’s always being refined to provide it better properties. Need your sterling silver to tarnish just a little slower? Add germanium. In truth, here is an instance (from a sterling silver formulation patent utility) of what these exotic sterling alloys would possibly include:

92.5% silver, about 0.5% copper, about 4.25% zinc, about 0.02% indium, about 0.48% tin, about 1.25% of a boron-copper alloy containing about 2% boron and about ninety eight% copper, and about 1% of a silicon-copper alloy containing about 10% silicon and about 90% copper.

Once you take a look at the instance above you may have noticed the absence of nickel. The excellent news is that it is rather uncommon for sterling silver to include nickel anymore.

In truth, we contacted Kevin Whitmore of Rio Grande Jewellery Supply, one of many largest and most revered suppliers of uncooked supplies for the jewelry industry. We asked Mr. Whitmore if it was a typical observe to see nickel utilized in sterling silver manufacturing and he stated “It might be very uncommon these days. There was a flight away from having nickel in sterling silver for a couple of years now.” He went on to add “In truth, there is actually no economical benefit to utilizing nickel as there are better, and less expensive, supplies that can be alloyed in.” Another reason he gave was the ban on nickel in Europe. “Who desires to make jewellery that they cannot promote in sure places?”

As Mr. Whitmore mentioned, Europe has a strict ban on nickel. In 1991 Denmark launched regulation to severely prohibit the use of nickel in jewellery and accessories. It was solely a short time earlier than a dramatic drop in nickel allergy was noticed within the population. Because of the success of Denmark’s ban, all of Europe followed go well with with comparable regulation in 2000. For that reason it makes sense for the manufacturers of sterling silver pellets and sheets (which are purchased as uncooked materials by jewelers) to keep nickel out of the manufacturing technique of uncooked sterling silver.

What could be the problem (besides the remote chance the silver really contains nickel) is that the jewelry piece could be plated with nickel. Sterling silver tends to put on and tarnish over time. There was a time when it was not unusual for manufacturers to plate their items with nickel to provide it an enduring shine.

Also, rhodium is usually used (a member of the platinum group) to plate sterling silver necklaces to provide it the look of white gold. Sadly, rhodium does not stick easily to silver so one other metal is often used to coat the silver and the rhodium is plated over that “glue” metal. What is a extremely popular metal for that “glue” process? You guessed it, nickel. The issue is that rhodium is pretty brittle and can kind microscopic cracks. Now the underlying nickel can get moist out of your skin and leech out nickel salts. Swiftly you might have an allergic response to sterling silver, which is absolutely the underlying nickel inflicting the rash.

So what does all of it imply?

Since there appears to be no financial benefit to utilizing nickel, and since regulation limiting the use of nickel is spreading, you actually ought to put sterling silver in your record of secure to put on items. We suggest purchasing on-line at jewellery stores that advertise “nickel free” since they should be further delicate to the topic when sourcing their products. Their rhodium ought to use a “glue” metal apart from nickel; their sterling silver ought to be sourced nickel free. To confuse things much more there are a couple of different names used for sterling silver like:

    * Argentium Silver: This silver contains germanium to resist tarnish and ought to be nickel free.    * Alpaca Silver, German Silver, Paktong and New Silver: These are actually different names for Nickel Silver, a silver type that, because the name suggests, will possible include nickel. These kinds of silver ought to be averted!

In addition, when purchasing, try to avoid older items that may have been produced when nickel plating was a more widespread observe and always shop where your “satisfaction is assured or your a reimbursement”!

All metals have the potential to set off an allergic response, even titanium, silver and, on very rare events, 24k gold. While nickel is the primary offender in metal allergy, and accounts for as much allergy as all other metals combined, bear in mind that individuals might be allergic to a couple of metal at a time! Affected person experimentation is the one solution if you undergo from a metal allergy. You can buy best quality cz jewelry at Overstocksilver.com.

VMS Ventures Provides Exploration Target Update at the Reed Copper Deposit and Option Properties Near Snow Lake, Manitoba

1327317427 72 VMS Ventures Provides Exploration Target Update at the Reed Copper
Deposit and Option Properties Near Snow Lake, Manitoba

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Jan 18, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –VMS Ventures Inc. /quotes/zigman/450483 CA:VMS +2.74% (“VMS”) is pleased to announcean exploration update on targets around the Reed Copper deposit andfour option properties. The Reed Copper deposit is located 120kilometres from Flin Flon, Manitoba and is the subject of a JointVenture with HudBay Minerals /quotes/zigman/32580 CA:HBM -1.66% /quotes/zigman/624622/quotes/nls/hbm HBM -2.38% (“HudBay”). VMSowns 30% of the Reed Joint Venture.

VMS Ventures COO Neil Richardson, states: “2012 promises to be anexciting year with exploration and development planned for the ReedCopper deposit and surrounding exploration properties. The HudBay andVMS joint management committee have approved a budget for a 4,000metre diamond drill program focusing on targets around the ReedCopper deposit and an additional 4,000 metres on the optionproperties, with a primary focus on the Reed North target. Recentwork by VMS and HudBay has resulted in the discovery of twoadditional mineralized zones within our option properties. Theserecent discoveries are further evidence supporting our belief in thecamp scale potential at the Reed project. The drilling will occur assoon as freeze-up and site preparation is completed.”

Reed Copper Deposit

The copper rich lens (Zone 10) at the Reed Copper deposit is stillopen down plunge. A proposed hole will be collared south of thedeposit targeting the mineralization horizon approximately 600 metresbelow surface (see figure 1). Drill site preparation is on-going, butstart-up is expected to be delayed due to the unusually mild winterweather and significant snow accumulation thus far. Additionaltargets are located just north of the deposit and are spatiallyassociated with drill holes RD-08-45, RLD037 and RD-08-42DNP. HoleRD-08-42DNP is being re-surveyed with borehole time-domain geophysicsusing two different loop configurations to accurately determine thelocation of the anomaly for drill testing this winter.

VMS and HudBay are parties to four option agreements which grantHudBay the right to earn a 70% joint venture interest in propertiesheld by VMS adjacent to the Reed Copper deposit. Among theexploration results from the option properties is the Reed Northdiscovery, located 1.8 kilometres north of the Reed Copper deposit, which included 7.18 metres grading 7.44% Cu, 0.23% Zn, 0.48 g/t Auand 7.57 g/t Ag in hole RLE006 (see figure 2).

A borehole pulse EM survey compilation done for VMS by KoopGeotechnical outlined the Reed North multi-lens base metal discovery. To date, fourteen holes have been completed on this new discoverymainly focusing on the western portion of the anomaly. Whole rockgeochemical analysis on the drill core indicates that the Reed Copperdeposit and the Reed North zone are within the same lithologicalunit. This horizon is now the focus of an extensive TDEM geophysicalsurvey planned for this winter between the Reed Copper and Reed Northzones. HudBay will continue its drilling campaign focusing on thedown plunge projection of the mineralized lens.

A second target area of interest is located 3.4 km to the northwestof the Reed Copper deposit. Drill holes RLE008 and RLE020 intersectedbase metal values of up to 3.34% copper and 2.94% zinc. A boreholepulse EM survey outlined a 400 metre long by 230 metre high modeledplate with hole RLE020 piercing the upper edge of this anomaly. Thisplate is largely un-tested and is also being considered for drillingwithin this winter’s option property budget/plan.

A third area of interest is a surface pulse time-domain EM anomalywhich is located between the historic Highway zone (discovered byFreeport McMoRan in 1970′s) and the Reed Copper deposit. This 500metre long anomaly was detected within favourable volcanic rocks andremains un-tested. The next step for this target is to construct a3-D model of the anomaly to support in the design of the drill holeplatform (see figure 3).
