This is Bill Flora. He helped lead the team credited with designing Metro, the tile-based Windows Phone UI that will constitute the core of Windows 8′s interface on touch-screen devices. Flora is understandably proud of his creation, “It was fresh.” he told CNet, “It wasn’t Apple.” That’s good because apparently everything else on his desk is.

Take a closer look. Flora appears to employ nothing but Apple products for his work—an Apple Cinema Display, a MacBook Pro, and an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard are all clearly visible. I’m surprised that Microsoft doesn’t have rules against fraternizing with the enemy’s tech like this.

Update: Flora hasn’t worked at Microsoft since September of last year; he left to found a “user experience design firm” called Tectonic. There’s no indication that he used a Mac when he worked at Microsoft. [CNet via CultofMac]

March Debut of ‘iPad 3′ a Sure Bet, Says Analyst

1329377837 30 March Debut of iPad 3 a Sure Bet, Says Analyst

Apple will introduce a new iPad the first full week of March, and will start selling it the following week, according to reports and industry analyst expectations.

The March debut of the iPad 3, as some have called it, was first reported today by AllThingsD , the blog owned by Dow Jones, the publisher of the Wall Street Journal. Citing unnamed sources, the blog said Apple will host a launch event the first week of March, likely at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, a regular venue for the company’s press announcements.

Last year, then-CEO Steve Jobs returned from medical leave to lead the launch event of the iPad 2 on March 2. Apple started selling the new tablet on March 11, 2011 via its online store.

If Apple follows the same timeline, it will probably conduct the event the week of March 5-9, and begin selling the new model the following week.

It’s possible that Apple will trot out a new iPad on one of the first two days of March — Thursday, March 1 or Friday, March 2 — but Apple usually hosts events earlier in the week.

Next month’s iPad introduction, if it does take place, will be the first without Jobs, who died last October at the age of 56 of complications from his long-running battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rumors have been circulating for weeks about the next iPad, with many claiming that Apple’s next tablet will boast several important changes, ranging from a quad-core processor to a higher-resolution screen.

Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, dismissed the former but said the latter was a certainty.

“[The next iPad] will have a higher-resolution screen that Apple will call a Retina display, even if it’s not,” said Gottheil, talking about the term Apple uses for the iPhone’s 326 pixel-per-inch (ppi) screen. “That’s important to them because it means the iPad will work well in their home theater play, since it will display full HD. And it’s an important differentiator [between the iPad and rival tablets] going forward.”

The iPad 2′s 9.7-in. screen has a resolution of 1024-by-768 pixels, or 132 ppi.

An iPad with a screen similar to the Retina display on the iPhone would have to have a resolution of approximately 3,220-by-2,060 pixels. Most of the chatter about the next iPad’s screen, however, has pointed to a resolution of 2,048-by-1,536 pixels, exactly double that of the iPad 2.

It’s possible that Apple will up the iPad’s processor to a quad-core, acknowledged Gottheil, but he said that was a long shot because of the power requirements. More likely is that Apple has settled for a faster dual-core system-on-a-chip, perhaps one designated A6 to mark improvements over 2011′s A5 that powers both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S.

“Siri will be there for sure,” added Gottheil, moving on to other predictions. “It’s clear that there’s some kind of hardware constraint, probably related to the noise reduction circuitry.”

Siri has been cited by most analysts as a major factor in the iPhone 4S’ sales last quarter, when Apple sold a record number of smartphones , most of them the Siri-able iPhone 4S.

Gottheil also expects that Apple will mimic its current iPhone practice and keep selling last year’s iPad 2, albeit at a lower price. His bet: $400 for an iPad 2 with Wi-Fi only and 16GB of flash-based storage space.

And the company will want to replicate last year’s short span between announcing the next iPad and the start of sales.

“They’re very strong on getting a product out as soon as possible,” said Gottheil. “They’re going to have a relatively tough first quarter for iPads as it is, what with buyers, like me, who are waiting for the next one.”

Apple suffered from that phenomenon last year when sales of the iPhone slumped in the quarter prior to its October launch. Company executives admitted that the nearly-constant Internet buzz about the next iPhone contributed to that slow-down.

Gottheil went out on a smaller limb for another pair of predictions, saying that he expects Apple to roll out a smaller 7-in. iPad — though not at the upcoming event — and perhaps tout a specially-designed wireless keyboard-case accessory for its tablet.

“I believe that’s always been in the plan” said Gottheil of a small iPad, contradicting past comments by Jobs, who had rejected seven inches as too small for a tablet. “Actually that’s a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank.”

The hottest-selling 7-in. tablet has been Amazon’s Fire, which debuted last November and serves primarily as an e-reader, secondarily as a true tablet.

A matched Bluetooth keyboard , perhaps integrated with a case to enclose the iPad, is also a long shot, but something that could attract customers.

“I think something like that would be an important peripheral for students,” Gottheil said.

QUORiON Relaunches Retail POS System with Touch Screen and Keyboard Combination

1329305828 13 QUORiON Relaunches Retail POS System with Touch Screen and Keyboard Combination

Stotternheim, Germany (PRWEB) January 23, 2012

QUORiON plans to introduce the POS Concerto as a new POS hybrid, because it combines both touch screen and classical keyboard. At first glance this combination appears seemingly redundant and mutually exclusive from one another. Yet, a closer look reveals that both a touch screen and keyboard indeed combine to provide a business owner with unique advantages, especially in the retail industry.

The touch screen has become the standard method of input for many modern POS systems. Touch is one of the simplest, rudimentary human actions. You instinctively reach out for what you want or point at it. As a result, a computer interface based on touch object selection instantly becomes easy to use and makes every person an instantaneous expert. Touch screen based POS systems therefore virtually eliminate entry errors, because users can select from clearly defined menus. These menus constitute a finite number of options, thereby providing the user with a step-by-step procedure to guide them to their goal. Moreover, integrated POS system touch screens can endure endless touches, scratches, dirty fingers as well as possible spills. Separate Touch monitors, on the other hand, often fail to deliver the same security. These attributes are all critical in a POS system’s ability to increase user accuracy, reduce training time and cost, as well as improve business efficiency and loss-prevention. It is therefore no surprise that touch screen POS systems are so popular in restaurants and bars. They assist staff to ensure fast order fulfillment, which in turn directly translates into better customer service plus loyalty. Even though touch screen POS systems cost more than conventional cash registers, their productivity increases more than makes up for their investment.

Although the touch screen offers so many advantages, the traditional keyboard still maintains distinct benefits. POS keyboards withstand every day retail abuse, because they are constructed of durable, spill resistant materials, as opposed to the standard PC keyboard. They include programmable keys that allow instant access to articles, multiple keyboard levels as well as one-key functions such as totalizers, produce, discounts, and payment media. You can basically program any key combination and macro you need in order to activate special POS software functions. Much like the PC desktop short cuts, these keys save time over the folder or object based menus. Consequently, retail and grocery stores tend to prefer keyboards.

So where does the Concerto fit into the POS system world? Many POS manufacturers offer both technologies in some of their PC based models, but usually with bulky external components such as a monitor plus external keyboard and CPU box. QUORiON’s POS Concerto, however, successfully combines both the touch screen and POS keyboard into one seamless design, while maintaining all the benefits mentioned previously. In addition, it does not suffer from the common PC problems such as noisy fans, driver problems, and malware, because it is a closed, embedded POS system. The design wastes no valuable space nor does it expose cables to damage, tangles, and dust.

The touch screen and keyboard combination makes the POS Concerto pre destined as a retail POS system. Though, restaurants with huge menu cards or bars with large selections of cocktails would profit from direct PLU/article call ups also. The integrated flat keyboard increases PLU call up speed for experienced users or frequently sold items. Trainees should in turn benefit from the easy touch navigation, which leads them through the order process by displaying available options. Once a user calls up an article directly, additional touch screen options allow for sizing, color, and other attributes. The hard keys, on the other hand, let users quickly process and enter large amounts of information such as customer addresses. Moreover, multiple keyboard levels, an interactive on screen window-system, and quick tender keys all support retail usability. The QMP POS software that runs on the POS Concerto, supplies a number of macros and special functions that users can call up with key combinations such as multi-buy tables and cross selling.

QUORiON’s POS Concerto supplies value as a retail POS system or in hybrid point of sale applications such as coffee shops. It’s strength lies in its seamless combination of tested POS technologies – the touch screen and POS keyboard. The Concerto successfully maintains the inherent value of both without compromise in functionality.

1329217034 25 MOTU MicroBook II: portable audio interface updated

MOTU has unveiled the MicroBook II, an update to its compact, portable audio interface.

Whereas the original MicroBook was a 4-in/2-out device, this one is 4-in/6-out. It’s also been totally redesigned, and now features a hands-on volume control, USB 2.0 connectivity, an XLR input and 96kHz recording and playback.

Read on to find out more. MicroBook II will ship in the Spring priced at $269, the same as the original version.

MOTU MicroBook II press release

Thursday, January 26, 2012. In a post-NAMM announcement, MOTU unveiled the MicroBook II, an updated version of the compact, studio-grade audio interface that turns a Mac or PC into a personal 4 x 6 recording studio with professional I/O and monitor mixing. The MicroBook II will replace the original model at the same price.

“For discriminating users who insist on the very best audio quality, MicroBook II delivers unmatched performance for compact, personal recording,” said MOTU Marketing Director Jim Cooper. “Plug in a mic, guitar, keyboard, and powered speakers, then enjoy sound quality that rivals other audio interfaces in the six to eight hundred dollar range.”

The MicroBook II comes in a compact, rugged cast metal case suitable for on-the-go recording, personal studio tracking, laptop-based DJ-ing, and many other recording and playback activities. At only 5.5 x 3.5 x 1.25 inches, the bus-powered MicroBook II has all the great features of the original model, plus hands-on volume control, USB 2.0 connectivity for low-latency performance, more simultaneous outputs (six), an XLR mic input, and support for 96 kHz recording and playback.

I/O engineered for sound quality

The four inputs (mic, hi-Z guitar, and stereo balanced line in) can be recorded simultaneously. The mic preamp delivers neutral coloration and pristine sound, with 20 dB pad and 48V phantom power for condenser mics.

Engineered for exceptional audio quality, the MicroBook II includes balanced analog connectors and digitally controlled analog trim. Input trim is controlled separately from input mix volume, so that users never have to sacrifice sound quality for a balanced mix.

The MicroBook II provides six channels of computer output on eight physical outputs (four pairs): balanced TRS quarter-inch main outs, stereo “mini” line out, S/PDIF digital out, and phones (on a stereo quarter-inch jack). The S/PDIF digital output always mirrors the main outs.

Advanced features

Internal CueMix™ mixing and routing features let users program a different stereo mix for each output pair, consisting of any combination of live inputs and host audio tracks. Alternately, users can send the same mix to multiple outputs, or choose a separate output for the MicroBook’s built-in test tone generator or white and pink noise generator.

The driver provides an extra input and output pair for routing complete mixes back to the computer host, for scoping audio streams with the analysis tools in the included CueMix FX software, and for routing virtual instrument (or other host) output to the MicroBook II mixer.

On-board effects include modeled analog EQ and compression, which can be applied with near-zero latency (in the hardware) to live inputs.

Review: Acer Aspire S3

1328834237 81 Review: Acer Aspire S3HARLEY OGIER

ACER ASPIRE S3: A great launch device for the Ultrabook concept, but held back from an ‘Excellent’ rating by several small annoyances.

REVIEW: Acer’s Aspire S3 is the first ‘Ultrabook’ released in the New Zealand and Australian markets. Ultrabooks – ultra-thin and light laptops intended to offer long battery life without compromising on performance – are set to be 2012′s ‘big thing’ in PC form factors. Perhaps the best description of the Intel-sponsored initiative (though also the least politic one), is to introduce competition into the MacBook Air’s previously-impenetrable niche.

Straight out of the box, the 13-inch Aspire S3 is a beautiful piece of hardware. Just 13mm at its thickest point, it’s substantially thinner than the 13-inch MacBook Air (which is 17mm at its thickest, though more starkly tapered toward the front). It’s also essentially the same weight: both are just under 1.4kg.

The fully Aluminium/Magnesium frame doesn’t have the rigidity of the MacBook Air’s aluminium unibody, but stills feels exceptionally solid. The Aspire S3′s seams and joins are all very subtle, worked nicely into the design. There are no ill-fitting parts or gaping edges, as you might find a cheap plastic-cased laptop.

The 1366 x 768 screen is sharp and clear, though somewhat lacking in brightness. Disappointingly, colours are notably washed out across the board (deep red, green and blue hues all appear much paler than they should). Whether this bothers you will really depend on the type of computing you’ll be using the Aspire S3 for.

If you’re trying to edit photographs, design websites or similar visual work, the colour inaccuracies will really provide a hurdle. No amount of calibration will fix this: as far as we could tell, it’s an inherent limitation of the hardware. If you’re just web browsing, watching YouTube clips or knocking out your thesis in Word, the advantages of the S3′s form factor could easily justify the limitations in colour reproduction.

The grey-on-silver island keyboard is attractive and full-sized, but does have a few limitations. Key travel is very shallow -hard on the fingers during long stretches of typing, but is understandable given the S3′s thin body. Less understandable is the classically-styled (L-shaped) Enter key, which cuts far too close to the Backslash key above and can lead to mistyping. The arrow keys are also decidedly undersized, each with less than half the surface area of the other keys. If you’re trying to select and edit text without using the mouse, as one might do on a laptop, this is going to be a major annoyance.

The touchpad is a good size – around 12cm/4.7 inches diagonally – and the whole surface is usable for cursor movement. In fact, there are no buttons marked at all. To click, you can either tap anywhere on the pad (left click) or press the lower left or right corner, under which the click buttons are hidden. Right-clicking can be a little difficult, but overall the touchpad provides an easy and reliable way to navigate Windows.

Powering our review model was an Intel Core i5-2467M CPU, backed by 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. This model sells for a very reasonable $1,599. Several variants are available, up to a $2,499 model with an Intel Core i7 CPU and 256GB SSD.

As an Ultrabook, the Aspire S3 uses Intel’s on-CPU graphics. This means the S3 lacks DirectX 11 support, and is rather limited in terms of graphical performance. Expect to see this improve in future generations of Ultrabook: Intel’s next generation of Core i processors (codenamed ‘Ivy Bridge’) will feature DX11 support, and purportedly improve the on-chip graphics performance beyond that offered by the current generation (Sandy Bridge). As for the S3, it’s never going to be a gaming machine, nor a top-shelf multimedia powerhouse, but it’s no slouch in the CPU department.

Overall performance is commensurate with the ultra-portable laptops in our recent roundup, while the S3 is decidedly thinner and lighter than the average set by that class. Acer and Intel have effectively shrunk the smallest class of laptop, without compromising performance to do so: it’s an impressive outcome, and hints at good things to come over the Ultrabook frontier.

Following the style of the MacBook Air, connectivity is admittedly a little limited on the Aspire S3. You’ll get an SD card reader, headphone socket, two USB 2.0 ports (no USB 3), HDMI out, Wireless N and Bluetooth 4.0. The lithium-polymer battery is not user replaceable, so there’s no way to carry a spare.

The USB ports, HDMI output and power socket are all along the rear edge – great for keeping cables tidy and out of your mousing area, but annoying when you’re connecting and unplugging USB drives or other peripherals frequently.

Particularly useful – and novel – is the S3′s ‘Instant On’ technology. Close your Ultrabook, and it falls asleep. After 8 hours, it falls into a deeper sleep which will preserve the battery for up to 50 days. Wakeup time? Less than two seconds. Similar ‘instant on’ functionality was the one thing that swayed me, personally, to a MacBook Pro when purchasing my last laptop. Now it’s no longer the sole domain of Apple, with Ultrabooks promising that same massively time-saving function.

Battery life in our relatively demanding ‘productivity’ test was 3 hours and 22 minutes – almost 30 minutes less than our non-Ultrabook ultraportables averaged. Acer advertises battery life up to 7 hours – under less demanding use, such as light web browsing or word processing, I found that figure really was achievable. More so, the ‘instant on’ technology means you can pop the laptop to sleep if you walk away for even a minute or two – something you probably wouldn’t do with a slower-waking machine. That way, without a doubt, lies the road to great battery life.

The Aspire S3 is worth going out and buying, right now, if you need a laptop that focuses on portability, but still delivers reasonable processing power. Beware, though, if you need USB 3, great graphical performance or good on-screen colour accuracy. None are things you’ll find in the Aspire S3, and none are issues that can be upgraded or optimised away.

-PC World

As usual the model with the SSD drive is way overpriced. SSD drives have been in mainstream for the last 2 or 3 years yet have failed to come down in price , often driving up notebooks by an extra 1000 dollars. Im not sure why SSD’s are still expensive. They are the future of HDDs yet we are still paying premium prices 3 years down the track.

The Verbatim wireless slim keyboard and mouse is a low profile and multimedia wireless desktop bundle. The keyboard is designed to save as much space as possible, and the cordless capability of both the mouse and keyboard saves a lot of clutter in your computer set up. Both the keyboard and mouse work on a 2.4 GHz wireless signal, which means that the connection to the computer is always reliable and there is no lagging while typing or moving the cursor. This also means that the connection will not waver, and no keystrokes or mouse movements will be lost. The wireless dongle works for both the mouse and keyboard, which saves an extra USB slot. In order to use this desktop bundle, you do have to install software, which comes with the product in a CD. Setting up the mouse and keyboard isn’t that hard to do, and the batteries (2 AA for the mouse and 2 AAA batteries for the keyboard) come included however, there is no auto or manual shutoff, so in order to save battery power, you must remove the batteries

The keyboard is designed to make use of the computer a hassle free and convenient experience, but the multimedia keys are definitely lacking, allowing only control of music programs. If there were keys that allowed quick access to email or Internet applications, as well as programmable hot keys, this keyboard would be a much better multimedia keyboard. However, the action of the keys is quite nice and provides nice feedback while typing, especially for long periods of time. While the keyboard is designed to save space on a desktop, the keys are spaced just enough so that it is very unlikely that you’ll ever hit more than one key will typing, preventing a lot of unnecessary typos. Additionally, the keyboard has a nice weight to it so that it will not slide around while being typed on. The keyboard does not have any legs to angle it, which is unfortunate, but the design of the keyboard means that it is already angled to be usable.

The mouse has a somewhat square shape, but fits snugly with the user’s hand. The mouse is rather small, another space saving feature of this bundle, but is not so small that it is a hindrance to use. The tracking with the mouse is very precise, and there is no lagging or skipping of the cursor over wooden desktops or mouse pads. A nice feature on the mouse is the fact that you can click on the on the scroll wheel to enable faster scrolling. Overall, this is a great wireless desktop bundle, and is perfect for use with laptops or desktop computers at home thanks to its space saving design and high quality. It sells for $63.00 USD on Amazon.

An Invisible Keyboard Aims to Improve Touch-Screen Typing

LAS VEGAS — A Jerusalem-based start-up is trying to eliminate a problem that you didn’t know existed: the visibility of a keyboard.

At the International Consumer Electronics Show, the company, Snapkeys, demonstrated its invisible keyboard, which it is hoping will become the default typing method on smartphones and tablets, replacing the traditional qwerty layout.

“We wanted to get rid of the qwerty keyboard, because all these technologies have changed, and qwerty is the only thing that hasn’t changed,” said Ryan Ghassabian, a business development manager at Snapkeys. He added that typing on a touch-screen device, especially a tablet, is too cumbersome, and an invisible keyboard would increase speed and comfort.

The Snapkeys keyboard consists of four typing areas, each denoted by a different symbol: a single dot, two dots, a solid line and a circle.

When typing a letter, you imagine it being upper-cased to determine which of the four areas you type inside. The letter A, for example, stands on two points, and therefore you would tap on the area with two dots to type it. The letter I stands on one point, so you’d tap the single dot. The letter E stands on a wide base, so you’d tap the solid line symbol. The letter R has a complete circle inside its shape, so you’d tap the circle symbol. The software then uses automatic prediction to guess what exactly you’re trying to type. If it guesses the wrong word, you can tap an arrow to have it try again.

Once you memorize the input method, you can make the keyboard invisible. Snapkeys plans to integrate the keyboard into social apps — say, an app where you’re watching a video with friends in a chat room. The invisible keyboard would allow you to type in the video area and send messages, so the image would no longer be obstructed.

Mr. Ghassabian says that Snapkeys is in negotiations with several carriers to make the invisible keyboard the default typing tool on Android smartphones.

I see that concert hasn't made them happy. On a side note, Michael Bubl is at #2 on the Billboard Hot Tours list this week with $8,638,840 in ticket sales. Bass and Stick participant Tony Levin, for instance, has appeared on just about every Gabriel studio album, nevertheless not the soundtracks Enthusiasm and Prolonged Stroll Home, and has carried out on any single Gabriel solo tour. Their warnings even reminded me of when my friends talked about seeing Motley Crue or Nails live and of how ear bleedingly loud it was. Why should you expect allmusic.com to become worthless?
