Drake has finally addressed the Common beef expressing that he has no plans to continue to the ongoing feud between the two rappers.

Common and Drake have taken center stage over the past few weeks with their back and forth hip hop beef. After Common took shots with ‘Sweet’ on his ‘The Dreamer, The Believer’ album, the two went back and forth a few times with the ball being left in Drake’s court after Common dropped a ‘Stay Schemin’ remix unloading on Drake.

It turns out that Drake has absolutely no intention of responding, and has moved on to recording new music for his upcoming album. Drizzy did have some words to say in an interview with NahRight in regards to the hip hop beef with Common, and whether or not he would respond.

“No. Because despite how it’s been worded by him that situation is not a ‘hip hop moment’ or a ‘battle for the sake of musical integrity’…it’s a ploy for attention around the release of an album,” Drake noted, “More than anything it was just disappointing cause what kid isn’t a fan of what Common has done for our genre. A guy who made such an incredible career for himself based off expressing genuine feelings about life and love is now targeting me for sharing my story.”

Seeing that Common recently stated he was also ready to move on from the feud, it looks like things should settle down between the two rappers in the ensuing weeks as Drake readies the release of his Weeknd featured music video for Zone.

To get to the point though, not everyone is going to follow through all the time. That works like crazy. They claim to have concert tickets available. Tony Williams in charge with ‘King or the Fool’

1329703029 91 Tony Williams in charge with King or the Fool

Special to the Star-Telegram

The “World Famous” Tony Williams is a tad nervous about how his new album, King or the Fool, will be received.During the past several years, Williams grabbed studio time when he could while touring the world with his first cousin, Kanye West, as a soul-singing supporter of the multiplatinum rapper. Now that he is back in Fort Worth, his home since 1992, Williams splits his time between running a thrift store in Dallas’ Deep Ellum area, Lula B’s Antique Mall, and re-inventing his music career. He sits in his multicolored blazer and explains his worries about hip-hop fans: “I’m almost scared King or the Fool will be the opposite of what they’re expecting.”Williams grew up in Oklahoma City, a soul and R&B singer since he was a child. His aunt recruited him to sing in her community choir in Tulsa, where he performed with future members of the Gap Band. His parents, former civil rights activists, influenced him profoundly with their own singing and musical stylings. Music was a family affair.”In the ’70s, there was no youth movement in music,” he said. “You listened to what your parents did — mature artists.”The music bug bit the younger generation of his family. He introduced a young West to his first neighborhood studio, where Williams was helping Color Me Badd write some of the group’s early demos.Eventually, Williams moved to Los Angeles, where he flirted with commercial success in the group Color Blind. After moving to Texas, subsequent ventures continually unraveled, and he got discouraged. He even stopped listening to music for an entire year. In 1991, returning to his radio, he found that soul had been mostly incorporated into genres like rock and the new school of hip-hop.Energized by the possibilities, he adapted first into the soul metal group Crucial Fiction, then into the alt-funk-Christian SoulJah. For more than a decade, Williams lived like a typical local musician. He took odd jobs and cut hair to support his family and his music habit. Making original music sustained him. “As an artist, when you are doing anything but that, you are out of your element,” Williams said. Not a big rap fanMeanwhile, West had been building a reputation in Chicago as a producer and rapper. Williams didn’t take his younger cousin too seriously. West, at times, got “offended” that Williams didn’t recognize his burgeoning fame. In 2003, Williams fetched West from the airport on Christmas, and Kanye put into the CD player an album that he was two weeks away from completing: The College Dropout.Williams sang over the song Spaceship, and his voice fit the song like a glove. West flew him out to California the following Monday, and Williams ended up singing on five of the album’s songs.Williams wrote for and sang on all of West’s ensuing records. “The way Kanye utilized my voice is part of his genius. He hears voices as if they are instruments,” he said. His contributions give the albums an authenticity often lacking in slick modern productions.Williams toured the world with West for five years, a time during which “I took my vision and set it on the shelf,” he said.Though he loved and appreciated the experience, he wasn’t always rap’s biggest fan. “Because of hip-hop, classic R&B suffered,” Williams said. “It overshadowed and swallowed up real R&B then regurgitated this watered-down hybrid.”Williams’ natural inclination is to make uplifting, groovy music. His voice is familiar like an old friend’s, and his compositions resonate with timelessness. He created recent mix tapes Finding Dakota Grey and Some of My Best Rappers Are Friends with an “intentional cool” factor, as he describes it.Old schoolFor King, he wanted to make R&B music his grandmother and his 17-year-old daughter would enjoy. He has a penchant for straddling time. He sounds equally at home in the 1970s or today.”I think it supersedes age, cultural demographics, genres,” he said of the new album, which he is releasing on The High Society label. He enlisted West and John Legend for several tracks and utilized the production skills of Hit-Boy. The album’s guest list grows impressively, but Williams isn’t relying on his famous friends. A humble guy, he only tagged himself “World Famous” so search engines could distinguish him from a jazz drummer by the same name.He has acquired a “phenomenal sphere of influence” from his association with West, and he hopes those fans will embrace his return to R&B roots. The record has old-school elements, sure, but it is equally valid today. After all, Williams says, “music doesn’t spoil.”

Besides playing great music and raging on stage, the Foo-audience connection is a huge part of why their concerts are so fun. [Rap/Hiphop] Busta Rhymes featuring Missy Elliott, Lil’ Wayne & Chris Brown – Why Stop Now (Remix)

Someone told Busta Rhymes his current single “Why Stop Now”  feat.  Chris Brown could be way better then it was and guess what.. he listened! Adding more vocals, lyrics and adjusting the flow has really shows that the 11x nominated Grammy rapper is not afraid to innovate on old tracks, something that we’ve seen happen a lot more recently in the EDM scene with artists like Dillon Francis and his 2 versions of I.D.G.A.F.O.S and Beutician.

The new & improved Why Stop Now opens the floor for Lil’ Wayne and Busta’s sweetly-named “beautiful twin” Missy Elliott who matched Busta in her fierce spit of lyrics down the mic. With all artists dropping their lyrics in a style they do best, the record really steps up a notch and added to the best of busta collection

Khia is not new to reality television as she was featured on Ego’s Miss Rap Supreme which was also produced by VH1.

Khia has encouraged fans to reach out to LHH producer, Mona Scott Young, via the social media (twitter) to help convince her to cast her on the show.

Think she will make it?

Bjork takes you on a highly charged, emotional journey and you're guaranteed to feel refreshed, amazed and saying "Wow" for a long while after. Again, people come from all over the world for these events, so make your plans early. Music downloads is always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Common may need a Hip Hop lesson in beef « The Collective Conscious

1329597427 92 Common may need a Hip Hop lesson in beef « The Collective Conscious

Here is a beef that has gone on way too long already. Common vs. Drake. While at Aka Hip Hop.com I saw an interview with Common and it was about this whole beef. What’s crazy about this whole thing is Common hasn’t gotten this much publicity since Be when the word first came out the Kanye West was going to produce the whole album. Three albums after Be and the only hype even close to that album is a beef with Drake.

First off anyone who knows Hip Hop and respects real MCs knows this isn’t even worth putting thought into. Common is the better MC, artist and actor (well he starred in a movie, Just Wright, and worked along side Morgan Freeman King) but Drake is popular. Looking at this interview in the end Common says something about who decides the winner of these beefs. Now I first heard the interview because I was reading a comic book and that part came and I had to pull it back and see Common say what he said. What was crazy is I was expecting to the light bulb moment as he said those words. He didn’t but he should have.

Look this is ALMOST like what happened about a decade ago with KRS One and Nelly. Remember that beef? No, well Nelly was hot, real hot and had a song called “No. 1” and there was a line about people saying what’s real Hip Hop those rappers albums flop. KRS was featured on a song sometime after that and said something that came off like a diss to Nelly. From there the two kinda sorta went at each other. I say kinda because Nelly didn’t make a song just was featured on a remix and said some slick shit and had a freestyle dissing KRS. Of course KRS being the better MC killed Nelly with every track aimed at him. The problem is Nelly fans didn’t know KRS and radio since their record labels puppets and Universal put the push for Nelly radio only rocked Nelly stuff and it came off like Nelly was better “rapper”. This could go that way for this beef. I’ve seen Common in a few interviews and can tell you most of the people interviewing him are jumping on this beef bandwagon. I say that because any real Common or Hip Hop fan would ask if Common will go “Bitch In You” hard at Drake or just do a verse here and there? Then you add the fact out of the blue there are half ass mixtapes featuring Drake and Common songs as if Drake has a catalog as long as Common does.

In the end Common could come away looking like the loser to someone who really isn’t close to being on the same level as he is. Drake is popular and for some reason these blogs, Hip Hop websites, Hip Hop magazines and these people doing video interviews are making these young Hip Hop fans believe Drake is a real challenge for Common. What’s next Lil B. vs. Royce and people really thinking Lil B. may be able to take Royce. Hip Hop is real funny style right now.

There are plenty of sites which are dedicated to selling exclusive, hard to get tickets at a discounted rate. That may send me over the edge (I certainly have my portion of that). At center stage, a mob of diehards formed, shouting out every lyric back to the band as they played an enormous set that included tunes like "Nights Like These", "On My Way Downtown", "Sixes and Sevens", "The War", and "Tears Don't Matter Much." Singer Ben Nichols also joined in on the reveling, accepting free shots from the crowd, later thanking the New Yorkers for their "Yankee hospitality." Listening to Lucero and watching their live show, it's easy to see why fans get so worked up over them. My concept is based around my assumption that few nuts have a capacity suitable for concert. If you are planning to attend a concert in Edmonton? Many theatres and concert arenas have special clubs that you can join. I had trusted that I should like to take a more holistic approach. Jon Bon Jovi has released several albums over his 30 year long career and won numerous awards not only for his musical flair but also for his dashing looks and humanitarian work around the world.? P.S. It fell on me like a ton of bricks even though you won't be sorry.

1329519427 96 2012 NBA All Star Celebrity Game Will Include Hip Hop Artists J. Cole x Common

Post by Ian Wilkins, Feb 16, 2012 at 3:45 pm

With the NBA All-Star Game right around the corner, we now learn that both Common and J. Cole will be playing in the NBA Celebrity Game.

As we creep closer to the official NBA All-Star Weekend, more details emerge as to what we can expect from the weekend. One of the most exciting, and anticipated events during All-Star weekend is the NBA Celebrity Game that takes place every year on Saturday night.

This year will bring two of hip hop’s best artists to the hardwood with J. Cole and Common set to showcase their hooping skills. Of course these two won’t be the only big name celebrities playing in the game. Other stars include the likes of Ne-Yo, Kevin Hart, and many more.

Most of you will remember pop star Justin Bieber winning the MVP award during 2011′s game scoring 8 points along with four assists and 2 rebounds. Common played in 2011′s game as well, and J. Cole will of course be headlining Sunday’s pre-game concert.

Check out the full lineup of celebrities for the game after the jump.

JANES: Lin great for Ivy athletics

JANES: Lin great for Ivy athletics

“Lin-sanity.” “Lin-sational.” “Lin-ning.” A “Lin-derella Story.” Call it what you want, but right now, New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin is straight up bal-lin.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. But it’s true: the former Harvard basketball standout is tearing up the NBA to the tune of just under 27 points and just over eight assists in his last six games. That success has sparked a media frenzy in the mecca of professional basketball, Madison Square Garden, in one of the biggest sports markets in the world.

But beyond that, Lin has given Ivy League athletes a fresh, highly visible, and, in my opinion, representative face in the pros. Lin is doing what even the most successful professional former Ivy Leaguers haven’t been able to (see Bills’ QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, etc.): given Ivy League sports a visible figure who is not only talented, but also downright endearing.

It’s hard for Ivy League athletes to appeal to the masses. They come from schools with reputations for aloofness and elitism, schools associated in popular culture more with old money than with your everyday American dream. To come out of an Ivy League school is an honor, to be sure, but also labels athletes and nonathletes alike with certain stereotypes.

Lin doesn’t totally buck the trend: it’s not like his story is some rags-to-riches gut-wrencher. Lin grew up in Palo Alto, Calif., where he led his team to an upset win in the CIF Division II Championship as a senior and earned CIF Division II Player of the Year honors to bolster what could have been a tempting resume for Division I programs. The 6’3” Lin had even dodged genetics to gain the build of a Division I basketball player, but he earned no scholarship offers from his dream schools like Cal, Stanford or UCLA. With a 4.2 high school GPA bolstering his resume, he was guaranteed spots on Brown’s and Harvard’s squads — but no others. It’s not a knock on Ivy League athletics to say similar recruiting experiences are shared by a large number of Ancient Eight athletes: when doors to bigger schools were closed not by a lack of talent but by academic priorities, luck, or timing, strong academic qualifications opened the doors to Ivy League opportunities. Jeremy Lin’s basketball talent was overlooked and undervalued, so he used strong academic qualifications to find a Division I stage for his game.

And Lin made the most of it. A two-time First-Team All-Ivy selection, Lin became the first player in the history of the Ivy League to accumulate 1,450 points, 450 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals. With composure, versatility and decent size for a guard, Lin figured to gain NBA interest heading into the 2010 NBA draft.

He didn’t. As a top player in a league that rarely garners national attention, Lin’s successes were dismissed, and the Cantab went undrafted. A smart player who excels most completely in the team game, Lin lacked the flash that many of his major-conference competitors demonstrated in camps more suited to one-on-one skills and freakish athleticism. But by last season, Lin found himself on the Golden State Warriors’ roster after a big NBA Summer League performance … though at the end of the far end of the depth chart. He was waived on Dec. 9, picked up by Houston and waived again 12 days later. His career looked like another Ivy–to-pro dream to die in its infancy.

Then on Dec. 27, the New York Knicks picked him up and sent him to the D-league to develop his game while he waited for an unlikely chance at the team’s main roster. Again overlooked, again dismissed, but always opportunistic, Lin tallied a triple-double in a D-league game on Jan. 20. Three days later, he was in a Knicks jersey.

Since that date, Lin has started five of six games and led his team to six straight wins despite the absence of, at times, both Knick superstars Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. And for those who wondered how he would react when he struggled, Lin answered many questions last night when he struggled early (a career-high 11 turnovers), but came on strong late to finish with 11 assists, 27 points (12 in a fourth-quarter comeback), and the game-winning three in the waning seconds. Doubted and even written off out of high school and college, Lin is re-proving himself night in and night out as he grows into — at least for this short, short stretch — an NBA star.

Such is the struggle against preconceived notions faced by all Ivy League pro hopefuls. Lin’s story is one familiar to Ivy League fans, even if its (so far) happy ending is uncommon. But Lin hasn’t drawn support solely from the Ivy League crowd. Rather, his appeal is widespread. Most Asian-Americans support the first American-born Chinese or Taiwanese representative in the NBA to date. Knicks fans are hoping he’s the missing cog in a run to the top of the Eastern Conference, and pretty much everyone else who watches pro basketball is loving his improbable swag. Everyone is falling in love with the atypical NBA’er: an Asian-American, Harvard alum exchanging chest bumps with ’Melo and inspiring hip hop tracks. Jeremy Lin is an embodiment of many standout Ivy Leaguers like him, and everyone loves him and his story. He’s making the struggle of the big talent from the overlooked Ivy League relatable, lovable, and a slightly revised version of the classic American sports success story of determination and self-belief.

Through Lin, the Ivy League athlete’s story is becoming a tale to which American sports fans can relate in a way they haven’t been able to before. Lin is the first Ivy Leaguer to hit the NBA hardwood since Yale’s own Chris Dudley in 2003. And with all due respect to Dudley, who is certainly due a great deal of it after playing 16 years with five different NBA teams, Lin may be the most visible face of Ivy Leaguers in the pros in the modern era.

Dudley simply never generated the support and interest in his career that Lin’s meteoric rise to NBA prominence has ignited in just two short weeks. Nor did other standouts, some of whom put up some pretty big numbers (see former Princeton center Geoff Petrie, who took home the 1971 Rookie of the Year award and tallied 21.8 points per game in six pro seasons).

No, Lin is something special, and a great face for Ivy League athletics. He brings to the foreground the work ethic and solid, fundamental game of the Ivy athlete. Further, the fact that Lin excels most not one-on-one or with flashy moments of brilliance, but rather as a consistent team player exemplifies the best qualities of a college athlete. Lin has generated a following bridging demographics, which makes him the perfect representative for what is an improving and emerging Ivy League athletic scene, slowly but surely shaking its rep of sacrifice to athletic prowess for academic esteem, and showing everyone that both can be combined into success — and swag — at the college level and beyond.

He has been creating rhymes since he was eight years old. He grew up in the poor neighbourhood of Hollygrove. His father abandoned their family when he was only two years old. This is also why Lil Wayne preferred to be called ‘Wayne’ rather than his given name Dwayne because for him, it was the name of his father and his father has never been there for him. He made a name for himself in the hip-hop scene and being in the spotlight for more than a decade now, he has been giving his fans only the best of Lil Wayne songs.

His career has spanned more than 40 years, and he arrives with the hand-crafted music off his latest release, “The Conjurer.”

Rudy Tee & the Reno Bops, Ronny Tee at St. Pius X (3909 Harry Wurzbach, 8 p.m., $35 a couple). Valentine’s Day falls on Tuesday, not exactly the best night for romantic revelry. So Rudy & the Reno Bops will hit the Valentine’s Day dance thing early with golden oldies, songs that Rudy Tee has been singing around here since they were brand new, including “All I Could Do Was Cry,” “Lucille” and “My Dearest Darling.” This one is BYOB. Call (210) 656-4800 for tickets.

The Derailers, The Georges at Gruene Hall. With a sound that celebrates the music of everyone from Buck Owens and Charlie Rich to the Beatles, The Derailers deliver a cool retro sound. The Georges will open with roots country and rockabilly and will return Wednesday night.

Shinyribs, Lincoln Durham at The Phoenix Saloon in New Braunfels. Shinyribs is the alter ego honky-tonk gumbo band of Kevin Russell of The Gourds — as if The Gourds don’t have enough alter egos in their music mix. Durham is a solid roots music songwriter who hooked up with Ray Wylie Hubbard to produce his new CD, “The Shovel vs. The Howling Bones.”

Showtime is 8 p.m. Admission $5. A worthy valentine’s-themed option with tapas and antojitos optional.

Jorge Alejandro y La Paz at Fountain Bleu Banquet Hall. Award-winning singer-songwriter Jorge Alejandro’s romantic style is known worldwide and is the perfect choice for this venue’s Valentine’s Day dinner and dance. Dinner at 7 p.m.; music from 8-midnight. Admission $12. Advance tickets available at Janie’s Record Shop. There’s a free rose at the door for the first 50 ladies. If the romance ’n’ lovemaking thing is too much pressure, Alejandro and his band play Casa Blanca Ballroom on New Laredo highway on Friday.

The Lemonheads at White Rabbit. The band remains a reflection of singer-songwriter Evan Dando’s talents, interests, mood swings and sobriety. What began as a punky Boston trio morphed into a sexy post-grunge and college-radio delight. In the early days, it was the cover songs such as “Luka” and “Mrs. Robinson” that helped the group make sense to the MTV generation. Dando’s good looks played a huge role. According to the band’s website, the lineup remains “volatile.” Word is there’s a 47-song career-spanning collection in the works that will use the same title as the band’s indie debut, “Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners.” Shining Twin and Fear Snakeface open.

Rockstar Academy Concert at Sam’s Burger Joint. This is the latest graduating class from Studio M’s homegrown school of rock. These fun all-ages shows are jam-packed and include a special appearance by The Zots. There are big plans in the works for the series run by Grammy-winning producers Michael and Ron Morales. Admission $5.

John Arthur Martinez at Gruene Hall. Country singer/songwriter established a strong base on the first season of “Nashville Star” and continues to win new fans with just about every song, such as his latest, “The Open Road” — about heartaches and today’s hard economic times — which will be on an upcoming CD.

“The Return of Johnny V.,” The Sandworms at The Mix. The hopeless romantics at The Mix celebrate Cupid’s special day with a screening of Aaron Lee Lopez’s movie “The Return of Johnny V.,” the S.A.-filmed “Texas Grindhouse” flick. If you like movies full of revenge, gunfire and punch, you’ll love “The Return of Johnny V.” Word is many of the people involved in filming the movie are Mix regulars, so the commentary will likely be much better than any old DVD commentary. If that’s not enough of an attraction, The Sandworms will kick out their revved-up surf sounds. The film will roll at 10 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. The Sandworms will play at 11:30 p.m.

Greg G, KiiKii Star, Mike Green at Klusoz Martini & Tapas Bar (19314 US 281 N, 8 p.m., free). R&B and hip-hop will come together for this Valentine’s Day show. Louisiana-born Star hails from a musical family. She grew up singing an array of music and honed her vocal and performance chops working shows at Sea World. Green is a young R&B and soul singer who also knows his way around hip-hop. San Antonio-based Greg G is a singer, rapper and producer. His latest CD, “Gold Rush,” features a guest appearance by Star.

Paul Salos’ Frank Sinatra salute at San Pedro Playhouse (7 p.m.). Salos, an “America’s Got Talent” finalist, is a veteran performer who bears an uncanny resemblance to Sinatra in the voice and in the looks department. It’s a safe bet the Hell’s Kitchen-born crooner will deliver a whole lot of favorites from the Sinatra catalog. This concert is a fundraiser for the Viola’s Huge Heart Foundation, a labor of love for the Barrios family.

Roy Zimmerman at Radius Café (7 p.m., $15). The description “satirical singer songwriter” does not quite do this California troubadour justice. While the subjects of his “funny songs about ignorance, war and greed” are usually on the right side of the political spectrum, he’ll playfully skewer the entire spectrum with songs such as “To Be a Liberal,” “Ted Haggard Is Completely Heterosexual,” “Chickenhawk” and “Pumping Irony.” Zimmerman works solo and with the band The Foremen. He’s out now on a solo tour, “Live From the Starving Ear,” a salute to the legendary San Francisco club the hungry i, a proving ground for a generation of singers, poets, comedians and satirists.

Concert has been a driving force in recent decades. These figures were released through Billboard. In 2006, after an 11-year hiatus, Seger released Face the Promise. Lana Del Rey: The Billboard Cover Story

1328629029 86 Lana Del Rey: The Billboard Cover Story

Rarely is a breaking artist as polarizing as Lana Del Rey.

The 25-year-old songstress became one of 2011′s most seemingly organic upstarts. Following the release of her breakout single “Video Games” and its vintage-shaded video, apparently filmed and edited on her Macbook, the Lake Placid, N.Y., native racked upwards of 13 million YouTube views and has sold 20,000 copies of her double A-side “Video Games” single since its October 2011 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It debuted and spent three weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales chart. Joining Ellie Goulding and Jessie J, Del Rey recently signed with Next Model Management.

But it’s her all-important authenticity that’s had the Internet atwitter. Multiple blogs have painted a target on Del Rey, whose previous musical incarnation as Lizzy Grant, her birth name, was almost entirely wiped from the Web. On the surface, her tactics could appear calculated: Del Rey’s 2010 5 Points Records debut, Lizzy Grant aka Lana Del Ray, was on iTunes for only two months before vanishing from the store, while her website and social networking profiles were deleted and relaunched under her current guise.

Has a major label been silently orchestrating one of 2011′s greatest indie viral success stories? With her Del Rey debut, “Born to Die” (Interscope), arriving Jan. 31, the pillow-lipped singer/songwriter is the new year’s buzziest commodity, becoming the first artist since Natalie Imbruglia in 1998 to play “Saturday Night Live” (Jan. 14) before releasing her first major-label LP. She’s confirmed for “Late Night With David Letterman” on Feb. 2 and scheduled to appear on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” later the same month. Still, character assassination attempts on the Internet are a daily threat, even if acclaim outweighs the conspiracy theories.

“The Internet’s been well-established for 14 years,” Del Rey says. “It’s not like 1962 where you can’t find out about me. My intention was never to transform into a different person. What other people think of me is none of my business. Sometimes, it hurts my feelings. But I have to just keep going. The good stuff is really good. Some of the other stuff is difficult, but I’ll be able to tour now, probably sing for a while. That’s nice for me.”

Sites like Hipster Runoff, which (at press time) has dedicated 29 posts to Del Rey since last September, have taken her integrity to task, needling her artistic reinvention and dissecting supposed misconceptions. From the start, Del Rey has felt the sting of Internet ire, which coincided with her rise in stature. “I began getting messages on my personal Twitter account, really creepy messages, like, ‘The blogosphere that created you is about to destroy you,’” she says. “And within three days, the strangest things were happening.” At @LanaDelRey, she has 93,000-plus followers. Her bio: Everything I want I have. Money, notoriety and rivieras — I even think I found God — in the flash bulbs of your pretty cameras. It’s in all-caps.

Many of the attacks question her personal history. Sharpening her octave-spanning pipes in a church choir, Del Rey initially came to New York as Grant, performing at open-mic nights with the likes of Lady Gaga (then known as Stefani Germanotta). She soon signed an indie deal with 5 Points Records to release debut EP Kill Kill in 2008, followed by her full-length, Lizzy Grant aka Lana Del Ray, on the imprint.

The record, finished in 2008, collected dust for two years before its release. During a performance at the CMJ Music Marathon in 2009, she met her current manager, Ben Mawson, an entertainment lawyer (with the United Kingdom’s SSB Solicitors) intent on untangling her contractual obligations. Contrary to reports, Mawson claims that he and co-manager Ed Millett had nothing to do with naming her, or dictating her direction, instead negotiating her out of her deal with 5 Points and agreeing on joint ownership of the album.

“I’m a lawyer,” says Mawson, also of Hear No Evil Management. “And if I gave her advice on dressing, it would not be right.” His first move was to pull the album from iTunes two months after its release, so as not to confuse future consumers of music sold as Lana Del Rey’s. He hopes to release it as a collection of B-sides and claims it’s nothing that she’s ashamed of, but is more surprised by the overanalysis of past decisions. “It’s pretty crazy, this whole whirlwind of attention. Some of it’s great, but obviously, there’s been a lot of stuff — which is basically total fancy — about what she is and where she’s come from.”

David Kahne, who produced Grant as well as albums for Paul McCartney, Regina Spektor and Kelly Clarkson, thinks otherwise. Agreeing to work with her in 2008 after 5 Points connected them, he witnessed the beginnings of her reinvention from a platinum blonde guitar-cradler to an alt-indie princess. Contrary to what Del Rey asserts, Kahne is under the impression that she bought the rights back from 5 Points to stifle future opportunities to distribute it–an echo of rumors that the action was part of a calculated strategy.

“I think Lizzy Lana owns it, so [her team] wanted it out of circulation. That’s why they bought the rights from them,” Kahne says. “I think she wanted to be Lana Del Rey and didn’t want to be Lizzy Grant. That was her family name, and she’s very dramatic. She wiped [out] this other person. I think she actually thinks that she’s that other person, and she probably is. So that was the decision that she made, that she didn’t want traces of that whole person around, as far as I can tell.” He hasn’t worked with her since 2008.

To jump-start her transformation from Grant to Del Rey, she relocated to London and spent 2010 taking meetings with “every label,” but, she says, she was repeatedly rejected. Though his work with Del Rey ceased after they recorded three post-album songs, including “Yayo” and “Gramma,” Kahne observed the physical transformation that’s become a focal point of criticism.

“She looks different. [She] doesn’t sound different to me, though,” Kahne says. He claims that she was operatically trained, which Del Rey denies. But when it comes to songwriting, he praises her abilities. “She’s a clever writer, but she definitely has a very powerful angle on the image, the perfume of the thing that she wants to be. I think she probably didn’t feel that she was far enough into that, and by making this change, she’s more like what she wanted to be in the first place.”
