Hard Rock Hotels and Resorts – Recommend Agent

The hard rockin’ Hard Rock Hotels and Resorts are on a hot riff with a score of expansion plans in 2012, both close to home and across the globe. Hard Rock lays claims to the largest and most valuable music memorabilia collection in the world, Brian Klein, global head of marketing, Hotels & Casinos, Hard Rock International, points out. This rock and roll legacy has been a major hit with guests, many no doubt, lured by dreams of rock ‘n roll yesteryear.

“With over 70,000 (and counting) rock ‘n’ roll icons, we are using this priceless collection of art to bring our main differentiator, music, to life,” says Klein. “Our memorabilia connects guests of all ages to music history and brings back memories of old.”

Hard Rock has two flagship properties with Seminole Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos in Tampa and Hollywood, FL, plus Hard Rock Hotels/Casinos in Las Vegas; Biloxi, MS; Orlando; Chicago; San Diego; Pattaya, Thailand; Bali; Macau; Penang, Malaysia; Singapore; and Punta Cana.

And to add to that list, Hard Rock will follow its successful partnership with Palace Resorts that started with the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, by transforming Palace properties in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya into Hard Rock Hotels this year. These will be “ultimate all-inclusive” properties, with the first Hard Rock-rebranded hotel in Cancun scheduled to open in spring 2012. Puerto Vallarta is also slated for a spring 2012 opening, followed by a fall 2012 first-phase debut of the Riviera Maya property. Each hotel will remain fully operational as an existing Palace Resorts property during the conversion process.

“Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya are perennially popular Mexican vacation spots and a natural draw for Hard Rock patrons,” says Michael Shindler, executive v.p., Hotels & Casinos, Hard Rock International. “Coupled with our relationship with Palace Resorts—who have created some of the best resorts in the Americas over the last 25 plus years—seeking an agreement to rebrand these three great properties as Hard Rock was a no-brainer.”

All three Hard Rock Mexico locations are beachfront properties. Once they become Hard Rock Hotels, they’ll feature all-inclusive luxury accommodations including in-room jacuzzis, fine dining, top-shelf drinks, 24/7 room service and live entertainment, such as an ongoing schedule of live concerts, “celebrity-driven soirees” and other onsite events.

The Hard Rock Hotels in Mexico will be targeted at an international affluent luxury travel segment (with a focus on the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe), who are looking for a high-value, high-quality all-inclusive vacation, according to Frank Maduro, v.p. of marketing for Palace Resorts.

The new properties in Mexico are part of Hard Rock’s growth in the Latin America region, and will follow the opening of the Hard Rock Panama Megapolis that took place in December 2011. The 66-story hotel sits on three-quarters of an acre of land connected by a bridgeway to the cross-street Multicentro Mall and the Megapolis Convention Center, and is a few miles from the Panama Canal. It features a Rock Spa, signature restaurants and an oversized, free-form infinity pool with private cabanas.

Gibraltar: Between the Rock and an increasingly hard-line place

1329213435 63 Gibraltar: Between the Rock and an increasingly hard line place

Fabian Picardo’s office is surrounded by guns. In the courtyard sits a huge black cannon, while the entrance is protected by two more gold plated monsters, glinting in the sun.

But the newly-elected Chief Minister of Gibraltar hopes that he will find a peaceful way of protecting the Rock – despite an escalation in the war of words with Madrid.

“We are always hopeful that Spain will follow us into the 21st Century and drop its claim on our land,” said Mr Picardo, in his first interview with a British newspaper since winning the December election.

“The Spanish government are playing to their constituency of support and concentrating more on the theory of their claim, rather than the realities on the ground. And that is a tragedy for people of both sides of the frontier.”

If Mr Picardo, 39, was expecting a gentle introduction to the 300-year-old tussle over the sovereignty of Gibraltar, then he has had a brusque awakening. Just as the newly re-elected Cristina Kirchner in Argentina has made a diplomatic push against British “colonisation” of the Falkland Islands a key policy of her government, Spain’s ruling Partido Popular (PP) – itself freshly in power, following the November general elections – has been pushing sovereignty over Gibraltar up the agenda.

Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, has abandoned the tripartite talks over areas of co-operation between Spain, Britain and Gibraltar. Instead, on Wednesday, Madrid formally asked Britain for bilateral talks over the sovereignty of Gibraltar – much to the fury of the excluded overseas territory’s residents.

“They want to turn me into a Spaniard, but not one part of me is Spanish,” said Martin Pickford, a small businessman, as he drove through the winding streets in the shadow of the Rock.

“My ancestors were from Malta. Many more are descended from Genoese merchants or Italian sailors. No one here wants to be suddenly told they are Spanish.”

The publication of former Europe minister Peter Hain’s memoirs last month, in which he told how Tony Blair came close to agreeing joint Spanish-British sovereignty, has further raised hackles in Gibraltar. The territory was ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, and has been resolutely British ever since.

Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel García-Margallo, last month sparked alarm in Gibraltar when he greeted a British MEP friend with the age-old rallying cry: “Gibraltar: Spanish!” and he has further pressed the issue by writing to William Hague to demand clarification on Britain’s stance.

Mr Rajoy is set to meet David Cameron in London at the end of this month, but the authorities in Gibraltar are trusting that the British prime minister will defend their interests.

Yet Mr Picardo knows that he must remain on his guard. And inside his office just off Gibraltar’s Main Street, the Oxford-educated lawyer told The Sunday Telegraph that he is determined his government will not be intimidated by sabre-rattling from Madrid.

“We are seeing what appears to be a more proactive desire by Spain to raise the sovereignty issue,” he said, criticising Madrid’s decision to cease tripatrite talks.

“The Spanish government does not best serve the interests of its people, especially those in the local area, by snubbing an international agreement to which it has subscribed in principle.

“And with five million or so people unemployed, it seems to me the Spanish have other more important priorities than historic claims over my people.”

Certainly the dire economic situation across the border, with the highest unemployment in the eurozone – one in two young people have no job – has renewed focus on Spain’s booming British neighbour.

New luxury developments are still springing up alongside the sparkling marinas, and the Lord Nelson pub and Marks and Spencers are doing a roaring trade.

Growth this year is expected to be comfortably over four per cent, and the colony’s 30,000 inhabitants enjoy almost full employment. Gibraltar makes its money through offshore finance, tourism, its port and online gaming – and an enticingly low corporate tax rate of 10 per cent has brought businesses flocking to their shores.

“We believe we can attract the sort of investors that the rest of Europe would be welcoming with open arms,” said Mr Picardo.

“You have to remember the scale of the economy here. Gibraltar has a GDP of just over £1 billion. A £100m investment here goes a long way, whereas a £100m investment in Greece, Spain or the UK for instance is a drop in a drop in an ocean.

“So the highs and lows of the Spanish economy might not affect the bottom line as it could do, given our physical proximity.”

Across the border, in the windswept Spanish town of La Linea, residents gaze wistfully at their thriving neighbour.

“Just look at it. It is obviously part of Spain, and it’s crazy that it isn’t accepted as such,” said Pepe, 60, a retired hotelier, who did not want to give his surname. “I think it’s absolutely right that Mariano Rajoy speaks to Britain about the issue.”

His friend Paco, 65, added: “What hurts me most is that they are laughing at us from across there. During the World Cup they even supported Germany instead of Spain! It’s not right.”

In the pretty Andalusian plaza in the centre of town, others complain that Gibraltarians use the low-tax business regime to secure deals on mainland Spain. Smuggling of cheap Gibraltarian tobacco into Spain is also a problem.

“I am Spanish and I defend Spain, but they insult it,” said Inmaculada Floria, 36, warming her hands on a coffee beneath a sculpture of flamenco dancers. Like 7,000 other Spaniards, until recently she crossed the border daily to work in Gibraltar.

“The people there are really scared of the PP – they associate the party with Franco, who blockaded Gibraltar for 13 years. They should be talking about ways of improving co-operation, not just saying ‘No, no, no’.”

Her husband Tomas Rodriguez, 39, a civil servant, said: “It’s true that a lot of Spaniards aren’t interested in Gibraltar. But here it affects us directly. For instance, a coffee in La Linea costs the same as in Madrid, and we are pushed out of the property market. It needs to be sorted out.”

But those within Gibraltar’s ancient fortress walls argue that the territory actually does a huge amount to help the local area. A study by the Chamber of Commerce found that almost 20 per cent of all jobs in the Campo de Gibraltar area – from Tarifa in the west almost up to Estepona in the east – were provided by Gibraltar.

Furthermore, Spanish workers in Gibraltar earned £43m in 2007 – the most recent data available – which would be repatriated to Spain, while Gibraltar businesses imported £174m worth of goods from Spain.

“Gibraltar and Spain have a symbiotic relationship and we can do a lot more to work together,” said Edward Macquisten, chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce.

“But if Madrid continues to clamp down, then it won’t help anybody.”

Beneath Mr Macquisten’s office, Roy’s Cod Plaice is doing a brisk trade. “Last year was the best I’ve had in 24 years here,” said Roy Walker, 62, the owner. “Life is good here; the economy is good, weather is lovely, and there is very little crime.

“But there is constant hostility from the Spanish authorities, from the head of the government all the way down. Not from the people, but from their government.

“I live in Spain and come here every day, as do all my workers. The border queues are sometime two hours – why can’t it just be open like with Portugal or France? But I’m pleased David Cameron is standing up for us and saying sovereignty is our decision. And we want to stay as we are.”

It is a view shared by 98 per cent of Gibraltarians, who in a 2002 referendum voted resoundingly to maintain the status quo.

And it is something that Mr Picardo is determined to defend.

Is the cannon outside his office pointing in the direction of Spain, I ask?

“It’s pointing in the direction of the governor’s residence opposite – at the representative of the British Foreign Office!” he laughed. “But that is totally unintentional as in any event it is decorative. We are confident in our position here.

“Gibraltar’s arsenal is intellectual.”

Ferris bullish about Clermont mission

1328109427 79 Ferris bullish about Clermont missionThe Irish Times – Friday, January 20, 2012

The talismanic flanker doesn’t doubt his side face a huge challenge in France, but he feels this Ulster team are different, he tells GERRY THORNLEY

THE TREMORS from Ulster’s stunning 41-7 win over Leicester will reverberate through to this weekend’s final round of pool games, but to an extent it is Ulster themselves who have to park that victory and move on. Superb all-round performance and cracking night though it was, it will count for nothing if they don’t qualify for the quarter-finals.

“We kind of showed the rest of Europe and world rugby that Ulster have taken a couple of steps forward in the last two years with that big performance against Leicester last Friday,” says Stephen Ferris. “But we will need to play that well and more. The same again probably won’t be good enough.”

Even in the immediate aftermath of the win over Leicester, Ulster’s mindset was they would have to end Clermont’s 36-match winning streak at the Stade Marcel-Michelin tomorrow.

A win tonight for either Eric Elwood’s men over Harlequins or Gloucester over Harlequins would ensure Ulster’s presence in the last eight as one of the best runners-up. No disrespect to either Connacht, or Gloucester for that matter, but Ulster cannot expect any favours.

“Having reached the quarter-finals last season for the first time after 10 years of failing to qualify from our group, to an extent we were just happy to be there,” explains Ferris. “But now, having been there, we desperately want to be there again.

“It would be nice if Connacht did win and we knew we were in the quarter-finals, but even then we want to get a home quarter-final and to do that we’ll have to win in Clermont. That is in our own hands.”

There’s probably no tougher place to win on the road in Europe than Stade Marcel-Michelin, where Leinster obtained a bonus point last season, but Ferris is typically bullish.

“I was talking to Seán O’Brien and he was saying it’s a bloody tough place to go to. But we feel we have a bit of momentum. We’re at the top of our game at the minute and everybody seems to be playing really, really well.

“Records are made to be broken. We’re full of confidence and why shouldn’t we be? We’re playing some good stuff.”

Ferris agrees that last week’s win was the most complete Ulster performance he’s been part of, and compares it with the failure to press on for a bonus point in the 30-3 win over Toulouse five seasons ago to show how, a la Leinster and Munster, Ulster have developed a more ruthless streak.

That said, he also reveals that even in the post-match home dressingroom “we felt that every single player could give an extra five or 10 per cent.”

The improved self-confidence is in large part down to the influx of high class recruits. “When you’re bringing World Cup winners into your team it’s definitely going to have an impact. You look at the likes of John Afoa, who’s just come in. Our scrum was rock solid. It’s not too often you push Leicester around on their own ball. John has a serious amount of skill and it seems to be rubbing off on everybody else.

“We’ve got a blend of young talent coming in as well, like Craig Gilroy on the wing and Nevin Spence coming in this weekend. But there’s no doubt that the foreigners definitely add to Ulster and David Humphreys is doing a great job to get that calibre of player in.”

Ulster themselves have never won in 13 attempts on French soil, but Ferris points out that Ulster ended a similar drought in England two seasons ago by beating Bath, backing it up against the same opponents last season, and recorded a first away win in Llanelli last season and two weeks ago won 42-20 in Edinburgh.

“I think in the past there hasn’t been the same quality of players in the Ulster team to go over there and try and get a win, and the way we’re talking all week, when you look at our team sheet, the opposition are bound to think ‘that’s a quality team we’re up against here’. We’ve definitely got the quality of players to do it.”

Clermont underlined their potency with that 12-try haul away to Aironi and Ferris notes the quality of their backline.

“I think 90 per cent of their tries were with their backs. Lee Byrne at fullback runs some very good lines and they’re a very intelligent team. We’re not sure who they’re going to play at number 10 but you’d presume they’ll have a lot more ball than Leicester did last weekend and our defence needs to be top drawer.”

“We’re going to work really hard for each other and when we get the ball we need to be clinical. If there are any three-points to be kicked, they have to be kicked over. That’s what you have to do away from home.”

Having been obliged to watch last year’s quarter-final from the stands because of a knee injury, this is the biggest Ulster game Ferris has ever played.

“For me it definitely is. Everybody is very excited about it. From the first minute you’d expect us to get torn into them because everyone is chomping at the bit to get on to that field and to try and get that win.”

1328103431 98 New Music Reviews, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, AOR, Alternative Rock, Alternative Metal Mollo-Martin: The Third Cage Melodic Hard Rock/Metal 4.0/5.0

It’s been nearly ten years since they last worked together. Veteran singer Tony Martin (Black Sabbath, et al) and guitarist Dario Mollo (Voodoo Hill, Elektric Zoo, etc) reunite for the third time with the appropriately titled, The Third Cage.

Above, left to right, Tony Martin and Dario Mollo: third time’s a charm.

Essentially, with a few exceptions, The Third Cage is a heavy album, certainly leaning more towards metal. Of course, by definition, the emphasis lies on the performance of the principals. Martin remains as strong as ever: his muscular vocal style coming through on every song. His metal Side on Wicked World or Blind Fury, the melodic on One of the Few and Don’t Know What It Is About You, and the soaring on Oh My Soul and Violet Moon. Mollo also does not disappoint. He offers well-formed solos in the classic hard rock and metal tradition. Actually, he seems better when there’s less experimentation and more simple fire. This is notable Wardance, Blind Fury, and the incredible Oh My Soul, likely the best song on The Third Cage.

The Third Cage is a welcome return to form for Martin and Mollo, offering edgier, nearing metal, melodic hard rock. Perhaps they won’t wait another ten years to reconvene. Recommended.

Supporting cast steps up

1328047031 68 Supporting cast steps up

The Lupul and Kessel show will get you only so far. That much has been proven in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ first 49 games.

Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul — both headed to Ottawa to compete in the NHL’s annual All-Star Game, along with defenceman and captain Dion Phaneuf – have been Toronto’s best players this season, but the mere fact the Leafs are not a playoff team at the all-star break tells you all you need to know about how far those guys can carry the team.

In other words, Kessel and Lupul need help.

That will come in the form of anything Leafs GM Brian Burke can do in terms of making a long-anticipated trade, but also from within. In fact, help from within may end up being the key to making the playoffs.

So on a night when the Maple Leafs recorded back-to-back wins over New York Islanders, it was the supporting cast that stole the show on, er, off Broadway.

Start with goalie Jonas Gustavsson. As Leafs coach Ron Wilson indicated after the game, there is no goaltending controversy in Toronto. James Reimer was slated to be the top goalie at the start of the year; proved management right by going 4-0-1 in his first five games but got hurt; missed six weeks and didn’t have much success after returning. Pass the baton.

Gustavsson failed to take charge when Reimer went down with concussion-like symptoms; continued to work hard and when he was given a chance when he was signed from Sweden in 2009.

One day after recording his third shutout of the season, The Monster surrendered three goals, but may have played his best game of the year. With his team trailing 2-1 after 40 minutes — and with a woeful 1-17-4 record when trailing after two periods — Gustavsson saved the day with several critical saves in the third period.

The Islanders outshot Toronto 12-5 in the third period, but Gustavsson stepped up and was rock solid. The only goal that beat him was an absolute fluke — a clearing attempt by Grabovski (of all people) that hit a door jutting out from the boards and bounced right to P.A. Parenteau in front of the Leafs net allowing him to force overtime with a goal at 19:47.

In the end, though, Gustavsson came through for his team.

On a night when Mikhail Grabovski scored a goal and had three assists, I’d still say Gustavsson was the main difference between victory and defeat.

But while we’re on the topic, Grabovski wasn’t bad either. For some reason he has not been given the chance to centre the top line along his regular linemates, Nikolai Kulekin and Clarke MacArthur. Although Grabovski, Kulemin and MacArthur have been split up time and again, you get the feeling they will have to reconnect for this team to enjoy some sustained success.

Grabovski — a man on an island — has pushed hard pretty much on his own. All things considered, 16 goals and 32 points in 43 games are an impressive feat given his lack of support. As are six points in the last four games. If the Leafs make a push to the playoffs, his production will have to continue at a similar pace.

Then there is rookie Jake Gardiner; a swift-skating defenceman who, not so long ago, found himself ticketed to the minors. Luckily for Gardiner, Toronto’s AHL affiliate plays in the same city so it was only a short cab ride — and not a bus ride to Peoria. He was called back up almost immediately and continues to progress toward becoming a go-to offensive contributor. In the 42nd game of his big-league career he finally found the back of the net.

Finally, there is MacArthur who enjoyed a breakout year last season with 21 goals and 62 points and was rewarded handsomely with a two-year, $7.5 million contract, but he’s dropped off in 2011-12 as he’s endured a suspension, injury and too many nonproductive performances in the first half. He had been dropped all the way down to the fourth line the past few games, but when re-united with Grabovski and Kulemin in the second period Tuesday, he stepped up to the plate.

On Tuesday it was MacArthur that decided things when he took a pass from Grabovski and fired a shot that Islanders goalie Al Montoya caught — about six inches past the goal-line. It was actually kind of funny watching the look on players’ faces on the ice as they seemed certain the puck went in, but didn’t want to celebrate…just in case.

No points from Kessel? No points from Lupul?

MacArthur was happy to be back in a more important role with the team…and to respond favorably.

“It was great to get back to that line,” MacArthur said. “It was a little wake-up call for me. It’s not like we didn’t have chances before, but it’s something we want to build on.”

Wilson was excited with the play of his second line and acknowledged MacArthur’s determination after the game.

“Clarke’s problem is that he hasn’t been quite moving his feet or finishing checks,” Wilson said. “At the same time Joe Crabb has been playing well and helped out on that line. I told Clarke if he gets his feet moving and play well we’d get him back up. We made a change and Clarke was flying and good thing started to happen for him and the line.”

It was only the Islanders, so two straight wins heading into the break have to be taken with a grain of salt. And there’s no question the Leafs’ progress will be stalled if Kessel can’t maintain the play that’s thrust him into the spotlight for most of the first half.

But it’s encouraging that some of the support staff has finally taken on a little more responsibility.

If you’re in the vicinity of the Midland tonight, you might not only hear what’s going on inside, you might feel it too. Anthrax headlines a show with two fellow thrash-metal bands, Testament and Death Angel.Thrash metal is a hard-core subgenre of heavy metal, a sound characterized by progressive, bone-crunching guitar riffs, high-speed solos and fast-paced percussion (often with a double kick drum). The genre’s advent goes back the mid-1970s, when metal bands infused songs with high-speed riffs, but it was popularized in the early 1980s, when Metallica and Slayer released their first albums. They would become two of the so-called Big Four of thrash metal, the other two being Megadeth (founded by former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine) and Anthrax.Anthrax made waves in the thrash-metal world when it reunited with long-time singer Joey Belladonna in 2010, then joined a Big Four world tour. (See accompanying story.)In honor of the concept of a “Big Four” of any rock genre, The Star asked some local heavy metal aficionados, including about a dozen local musicians in hard-rock bands, to give us their top four bands, but we opened it up to the broader category of heavy-metal in general so that some of the forefathers of thrash metal could be honored. Here are their lists, with some comments included.Stevie Cruz, vocalist, HammerlordBlack SabbathSlayerMetallica (pre-“Black” album)Iron Maiden“You would have no Slayer or Metallica without Motorhead; however I consider them more rock ’n’ roll For better and for worse, metal would not be what it is today without Pantera. Seeing “Cowboys From Hell” live changed my life, and that moment inspires me still.“If we’re talking strictly ‘thrash’ (as I think they were doing with the Big Four tour), then I’d say they had it halfway right with Metallica and Slayer. But you could replace the other two with Kreator and Destruction, although I do love Anthrax and ‘Megadave.’ Death Angel rules, too. We got to play with them last year, and they still thrash hard.”Keenan Nichols, guitarist, the ArchitectsMotorheadBlack SabbathJudas PriestIron MaidenSteve Tulipana, guitarist, Roman Numerals and Season to Risk“I don’t think I could ever pick just four. I’d guess Keenan’s list is probably closest to what I’d consider the biggest, most successful of the heavies, and the ones I listen to the most. I’d say AC/DC is fairly metal but definitely not in the Anthrax way. I’d put Black Flag in the metal category first. Particularly the later records. So my oddball choices would be Black Flag, Mind Over Four, Slayer and Cradle of Filth, because they are hilarious.”Gregg Todt, vocalist/guitarist, Federation of HorsepowerBlack SabbathMotorheadJudas PriestRainbowJim Kilroy, promoterBlack SabbathDioDeep PurpleIron MaidenRobert Moore, host of ‘Sonic Spectrum’ on 96.5 FMJudas PriestIron MaidenMotorheadPentagram“AC/DC is hard rock, in my opinion, as is Rainbow. The Big Four of metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest. I’ll just give three; all others are still below them. The Big Four of speed metal: Metallica (before they sold out), Slayer, Anthrax and Motorhead. Possibly Megadeth as a fifth or throw Metallica out for the ‘Black’ album (I still have feelings of betrayal). Testament and Death Angel are great speed-metal bands, too. It’s really quite the bill.”Troy Van Horn, guitarist, the Depth and the WhisperIron MaidenFates WarningCandlemassNapalm Death“The Big Four are the big four for good reason. Not up for discussion.”Terry Taylor, bassist, Hammerlord “ ‘Big’ is really up to perception and personal preference. If I look at the Big Four of my life, it would have to be: Kiss (’70s era); Metallica (everything before the ‘Black’ album — not that it’s a bad album; just that the older stuff had much more of an impact on my life); the Misfits (not really metal but depends how you categorize; I am sure I will get some groans about that one but I am sticking to my guns); and Slayer (I celebrate their whole catalog).”Mike Stover, multi-instrumentalist, several bandsMegadethAnthraxDeath AngelVoivod“In high school I was an unabashed thrash-metal freak. • “At last, you can find peace now,” the Rev. Al Sharpton eulogizes at the funeral

Gardena, California (CNN) — About 300 mourners remembered legendary singer Etta James on Saturday as an authentic voice whose velvety vocals bridged genres from blues to rock.

Another legendary singer, Stevie Wonder, gave a musical tribute to James at her funeral: He played the electronic keyboard and sang his “Shelter in the Rain.” He then performed on the harmonica and sang The Lord’s Prayer.

Also performing at the service was Christina Aguilera, who sang James’ signature song “At Last” and ended her rendition to a standing audience with a farewell directed at James’ casket: “May you rest in peace.”

After the service, Aguilera told CNN that James was her idol.

“It was so emotional,” Aguilera said. “I went through the lyrics last night, and I did rehearsal … and it took on a whole new meaning having been invited by her close friends and family to sing that classic song at her service. And I started crying every time I started to sing it, and I thought, ‘My gosh, what if that happens tomorrow? I just want to do justice to Etta James. She meant the whole world to me, and it was a huge honor to be here today.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton presided over the funeral in southern California where James was raised, and he began the service by reading aloud a note from President Barack Obama, who said that James’ talents transcended genres.

Obama wrote that James will be remembered for her voice, Sharpton told family and friends at Greater Bethany Community Church City of Refuge in Gardena.

“I know she will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her,” the president’s note said, according to Sharpton.

Etta James died January 20 at the age of 73 of complications due to leukemia.

James died January 20 at the age of 73 of complications due to leukemia at a hospital in Riverside, California. She would have turned 74 last Wednesday.

Her assertive, earthy voice lit up such hits as “The Wallflower,” “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” and the wedding favorite “At Last.”

Sharpton said that James first developed her voice in a local Baptist church as a little girl singing gospel — which “was just race music when she started.” When she died this month, he said, her photograph appeared on the front page of the New York Times, a mark of a triumphant life.

“Etta James has given us too much to work with,” Sharpton said. “Etta James was for real. She was authentic.

“I think it was her authenticity that was part of the charisma that drew people to her,” Sharpton said. “She really became a bridge of American culture that changed the culture of the world. It was Etta James that bridged rhythm and blues with rock and roll.

“Etta James helped break down the culture curtain of America before the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” Sharpton eulogized. “She was able to get us to sing the same rhythms and melodies.”

Evoking the title of a signature song of James, Sharpton raised his voice: “At last, you can find peace now!

“At last, you can get the gratitude of the savior now,” Sharpton continued. “Etta, you made it, you’re going home. At last! At last! At last!”

Donto James, the older of James’ sons, recalled how his mother had a soft spot for anyone who lost their mother. Donto James played drums in his mother’s band.

“She’d give them a job like that,” he told the mourners.

“She loved her band. She would pick up anybody to work for,” he added.

In a lighter moment, the son recalled how high-spirited his mother was.

“She was feisty, very feisty,” he said. “I found myself as a son trying to clean up some things. I should have tried to stay out of it. I don’t know what I was doing.”

Fans got the opportunity Friday to bid farewell to James during a public viewing at the Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary. Hundreds of people waited for hours to sign registers and attend the viewing for James.

The family has requested donations be sent to The Rhythm & Blues Foundation.

The powerhouse singer, known as “Miss Peaches,” first hit the charts as a teenager, taking “The Wallflower (Roll With Me, Henry)” — an “answer record” to Hank Ballard’s “Work With Me, Annie” — to No. 1 on the R&B charts in 1955.

Sharpton: Etta James was cultural bridge 2003: Etta James reflects on her career

She joined Chess Records in 1960 and had a string of R&B and pop hits, many with lush string arrangements.

After a mid-decade fade, she re-emerged in 1967 with a more hard-edged, soulful sound.

Throughout her career, James overcame a heroin addiction, opened for the Rolling Stones, won six Grammys and was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Despite her ups and downs — including a number of health problems — she maintained an optimistic attitude.

“Most of the songs I sing, they have that blue feeling to it. They have that sorry feeling. And I don’t know what I’m sorry about,” she told CNN’s Denise Quan in 2002. “I don’t!”

Through it all, she was a spitfire beloved by contemporaries and young up-and-comers.

“Etta James is unmanageable, and I’m the closest thing she’s ever had to a manager,” Lupe De Leon, her manager of 30-plus years, told CNN.

British songstress Adele named James as one of her favorite singers, along with Aretha Franklin.

“If you were to look up the word ‘singer’ in the dictionary, you’d see their names,” Adele said in an interview.

Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in south Los Angeles to a teen mother and unknown father. She suspected her father was Rudolph Wanderone Jr., the famous pool hustler known as Minnesota Fats.

CNN’s Denise Quan in Gardena, Alan Duke and Todd Leopold contributed to this report.

Modified Dolls to modify hall with 11-act benefit Friday

1327539428 94 Modified Dolls to modify hall with 11 act benefit Friday

Friday’s benefit concert hosted by the Modified Dolls at the Eagles Hall is about as much music as you can get for $10.

It starts at 5 p.m. and ends at midnight, and in between no fewer than 11 acts are scheduled to play. That’s less than a buck for each performance. And all of that money goes to Trailseekers of Yakima, a YMCA-affiliated group that helps at-risk youth and their families.

What else could you want? Perhaps a group of fun-loving, brassy, sassy women who are proud of their tattoos and piercings? Well, that’s the Dolls themselves.

“We’re just out to prove we’re not all a bunch of hooligans,” says Lexi O’Neal of Yakima, the head Washington state doll and one of the concert’s main organizers.

The Modified Dolls, a group founded by Kennewick resident Holly Roettger to help charity while fighting stereotypes about women with body modifications, have already done toy drives and other fundraisers. Now, given their rock ‘n’ roll spirit, a concert is the next logical step.

“We had a bake sale in December, and it benefited the YWCA,” O’Neal says. “Their coordinator actually had the idea to do a benefit concert.”

From there it took only about a month to book all 11 acts, six of which fall under the broad category “rock” and six of which fall under the similarly broad category “hip-hop.” Underneath the “rock” heading alone are such disparate acts as R&B-tinged singer-songwriter Jose Raul and metal acts Deny Your Deceiver and Chokeout.

“It’s a pretty decent variety,” O’Neal says. “We have acoustic, soft rock. And then we have Deny Your Deceiver.”

Deny Your Deceiver, as local metalheads know, has elements of hardcore in its sound but is a pretty straightforward metal band.

“It’s very, very loud,” says guitarist E.J. Ramos. “It’s aggressive. We don’t really have any clear vocals. We like to keep a high energy while we’re playing. If you like the heavier stuff, you’ll probably enjoy it.”

Chokeout, likewise, has a good reputation around the Yakima Valley for playing fast, hard and loud. They’ve been together since 2006 and have played hundreds of shows in that time.

“It’s the raw energy,” says guitarist Brandon Buckley. “It’s a way to let it all out and have a good time.”

Both bands are mainstays on the Yakima scene, and both jumped at the chance to be part of something as big as this 11-act benefit. None of the bands is getting paid to play. But they’re looking forward to sharing the stage with so many other acts — and such diverse acts.

“Music in Yakima has finally started to grow again,” says Ramos. “In the last year and a half, two years, there’s a lot of new bands.”

Buckley says he’s seen that, too. The scene has ebbed and flowed over Chokeout’s six-year career. But there are more bands out there now, and Friday’s show provides a nice snapshot of that, he says. The mix of rock and hip-hop works better than you might expect, too, he says. For one thing, it allows bands to play to people who otherwise might never see them, he says. Chokeout has played alongside rappers before and found itself broadly accepted by their fans.

“It’s kind of cool to mix it up,” Buckley says. “It’s kind of crazy. (Our audience) is a variety; it’s a mix.”

Breaking down barriers between fans of music genres, between different kinds of bands, between all sorts of people, is a big part of the Modified Dolls ethos, so that fits with this show, O’Neal says. The basement of the Eagles Hall has a capacity of 300.

“We’re hoping to pack it,” she says. “We’ve been passing out fliers, there’s a lot of word of mouth, and all of the bands have their own fans.”
