MONTGOMERY – A former athlete and musician from Montgomery isshaking things up in the world of bluegrass and attracting interestfrom music fans around the country.

Brian Beken, a 2004 graduate of Montgomery High School, is thelead vocalist and fiddle player for MilkDrive, a uniquelyprogressive bluegrass band creating interest and attracting fansfor their innovative approach to expanding their music beyondtraditional limits.

We have a very progressive acoustic sound,” said Beken, of themusic he and his band mates write and perform. “There are elementsof jazz and country – and certainly bluegrass – and we incorporatejam sessions where there’s more freedom of expression.”

MilkDrive, whose webite describes the group as an Austin-basedalternative-folk-progressive string band, released its debut studioalbum, “Road From Home” produced by Bil VornDick, Alison Krauss,Bela Fleck, Bob Dylan and Ralph Stanley, last April.

The first album, a collection of live performances, was releasedin 2009 and the band is preparing to finish its third album nextmonth. The fan base isn’t large, but it’s dedicated – andgrowing.

“Having a strong fan base is important,” Beken said. “Theysupport us and get the word out.”

Beken, 26, played football at MHS and studied guitar, mandolin, bass and fiddle – and was a member of the Sidehill Gougers musicalgroup in high school – before heading off to college at TheUniversity of Texas in Austin.

“I lasted one semester,” he said. “Austin has a great musicscene, and I was drawn into it almost immediately.”

Beken spent approximately four years with the South Austin JugBand. Pop and country music have their place, but Beken said he wasalways drawn to bluegrass music – citing Richard Thompson, JeffBuckley and Bill Monroe as major influences.

“There was a time when friends and I got into Robert Earl Keenand Texas music,” he said. “But in the end, I was more into hangingout with friends. My taste in music always came back tobluegrass.”

Beken was particularly taken with David Grisman, a mandolinistand composer with a range of styles who popularized “dawg” music inthe ’70s. Grisman and his contemporaries, like Jerry Garcia of theGrateful Dead promoted bluegrass-influenced fusion sound —sometimes called newgrass.

Joining Beken in MilkDrive are Noah Jeffries on guitar, DennisLudiker on mandolin and Matt Mefford on double bass. The group ison the road regularly these days – recently opening for mega-starDel McCoury Band at a concert in Conroe.

The road to stardom, however, is still a challenge. Digitaltechnology allows MilkDrive – and other musicians – the opportunityto reach a worldwide audience via the Internet.

“The market is so huge it’s hard for music fans to find aparticular group or for a group to break out of the pack,” Bekensaid. “We’re doing well and we’re doing what we like – and that’s agood thing.”

Cambridge crooner wants photo from his heyday with the Five Shillings

1329605827 44 Cambridge crooner wants photo from his heyday with the Five Shillings

The story of Melvin Walton starts about a quarter century before he started one of the nation’s first inter-racial music groups, in the Jim Crow era in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was born to a black father and a Jewish mother who believed she was mixed race until her 91st birthday.

But that telling can wait, Walton says. He has more pressing business to attend to.

“I don’t have one picture of my singing group… and I’ve got to,” said Walton, 77, in his North Cambridge apartment. “Someone’s got to have one… If we get a picture, I’ll pay $500.”

Walton’s old doo-wop singing group, the Five Shillings, is going to be honored on March 11, at the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America gala concert and induction ceremony at Boston’s Symphony Hall. All the other groups have photos, Walton said, but so far the Five Shillings photographs have been lost to history.

Their music hasn’t faded. Though they only pressed one 45-speed record, the songs live on. One of Walton’s employees recently remixed one of the Five Shillings’ songs and added a backup piano track. Walton loved it.

The Shillings had an odd, haunting sound, and equally haunting lyrics. “I sit here and cry. Why, why, when I sit in this darkest room can I not visualize you before me,” Walton intoned on the 1958 cut of “Letter to an Angel,” which he said was inspired by the horrific scenes of Communist fighters being burned out of tunnels during the Korean War.

One of four children, Walton moved with his mother Gladys from Des Moines to Maine, and then to North Cambridge, where the family settled when he was about 11. To save money, Gladys walked to her work at two hospitals, in Arlington and Boston. On the way, people would yell the racial slur, “n—-r lover,” and Walton became a tough and scrappy fighter defending his mother’s honor, he said.

After a few years singing to the troops as part of the Air Force’s special services, Walton returned to Cambridge.

One evening in September 1957 after a few beers, Walton, his younger brother Dennis and their friend Teddy Whitley were snapping their fingers and singing songs in an Inman Square doorway. Just then, two white Irish young men from Cambridge, Jimmy Clancy and John Tierney came over and asked if they could join in.

“I’m thinking, ‘What do these white kids want to do with us?’” Walton recalled. “They put harmony in the group.”

The five-some started practicing and that New Years Eve they traveled to New York City, where Walton claims the group, once again singing in a doorway, was approached by the great composer Irving Berlin, who wanted them to be the background singers for Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Walton, the oldest of the group, passed on the opportunity thinking Berlin was trying to scam them, but they got a deal with Decca. The crooners wanted to be called the Velvetones, but there already was a group with that name, so the marketing geniuses at Decca settled on the Five Shillings, trying to play into the emerging British music scene.

The group played some gigs, and in August of 1958 Decca sent them demo records for the new EP, with “Letter to an Angel” on one side and the more upbeat “The Snake,” on the other.

According to Walton, Decca said it would promote the record that winter, but the two Irish mothers took the initiative themselves, sending the EP to radio stations and politicians around the state, souring relations with Decca.

Five Shillings recorded some more songs with Wren Records, but the record was never printed. Meanwhile, the multi-colored group faced animosity just because they weren’t all white.

Walton declined to publicly name the venue, but at a country club west of Boston where the group had played a kids show, they were turned away for an evening set. “You’re not coming in through my front door,” said a woman, apparently shocked to see the dark brown faces. In the end they weren’t even allowed to go through the kitchen.

“I remember when it was prejudiced,” said Walton, recalling the S&S Restaurant and Deli as one of the few places he and his mother were served.

Walton claims he used to pal around New York with Buddy Holly shortly before Holly died in an plane crash in 1959, but his singing group and his music career came to an end before long. Tierney married and dropped out of the group, and in close succession Whitley was killed in a car accident.

Even before he got together with the Five Shillings, Walton had started his own cleaning business, and had success in that field. He’s now semi-retired as an executive at Done Right Building Services.

Walton, who quit drinking about 30 years ago, also still has moves and a velvety voice to match. “I can jump up on the couch,” Walton said, demonstrating the same in his fourth-floor apartment. Walton’s not sure how many of the remaining Five Shillings he can wrangle onto the stage at Symphony Hall, but he’s bought scads of tickets for friends and family. If only he could buy that photo.

Any photo of the Five Shillings would look different from most of the other groups from that era. There would be three brown faces and two white. Walton’s sure that his group was either the first or at least the second racially mixed doo wop group.

“The Del-Vikings would be first, and then us,” Walton said.

Coincidentally, Walton’s mother used to do the work of hand-coloring black and white photos, until taking a job at the hospital.

She herself thought she was half-black until Walton’s daughters did some research, trying to track down her sister in Des Moines, and discovered the truth, that Gladys was born in 1904 to a German Jewish family.

People think about race differently these days. Now Walton is looking for a historical photograph from the time when seeing black and white men sharing a stage was a spectacle.

Van Halen sounds old-school fresh on 'A Different Kind of Truth'  – A&E – The Charleston Gazette – West Virginia News and Sports -

1329589030 21 Van Halen sounds old school fresh on 'A Different Kind of Truth'
   A&E
The Charleston Gazette West Virginia News and Sports "A Different Kind of Truth"

Van Halen

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — I'll be the first to admit that I was expecting to not like Van Halen's new album, "A Different Kind of Truth," its first release in nearly 14 years. A funny thing happened on the way to the throw-'em-under-the-bus line, though: the VH boys delivered a pretty darn good collection of tunes.

I'd heard a lot of pre-release negativity surrounding "Truth," including the fact that some of the songs were rehashes of older, unreleased material. Case in point: the album's opener and lead single, "Tattoo," has been revealed as a revved-up version of "Down in Flames" which dates back to 1977.

Another notable "oldie" is "She's the Woman," a survivor from VH's Gene Simmons-financed demo, circa '76. I could go on and on, but the fact of the matter is that these and any other unearthed archives sound at least as vibrant as 99.9 percent of what is being passed off as present-day "hard rock."

The biggest reason to the album's retro vibe is, of course, the re-emergence of vocalist David Lee Roth. For many, Diamond Dave's spandex-clad, balls-in-your-face bravado is, was and always will be the essence of Van Halen.

About the only things missing 28 years after "1984" are Roth's gratuitous Tarzanian war-whoops and 10 pounds of hair. Attitude, though, has never been in short supply for Dave, and "Truth" once again finds the singer playing prince as well as pauper ("You and Your Blues" and "Big River") while chasin' chicks ("Honeybabysweetiedoll") and hangin' out ("Beats Workin'").

Eddie Van Halen, the guitarist who re-defined rock and roll nearly 35 years ago, puts forth his most definitive stamp since '81s "Fair Warning." "China Town" and "Bullethead" flat out burn with, believe it or not, a little bit of speed-metal seasoning, while "As Is" could well be Ed's homage to the late "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

As for his brother Alex, well, speaking of the guy who has played four drum kits at once, let's just say that he is still bludgeoning and leave it at that. As if anything else needs to be said!

The album's most lighthearted tune is "Stay Frosty." It's "Ice Cream Man, Vol. 2" with its acoustic intro followed by the full-band kamikaze onslaught, but isn't this approach what made it fun in the first place?

I will say that the absence of founding bassist/harmony vocalist Michael Anthony is a bit of a sore spot for me. He was such an under-rated presence within Van Halen. I guess it's true: you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone!

Wolfgang Van Halen puts forth an impressive debut on bass alongside Papa Ed and Uncle Al. Wolfie sounds like he's put in the hours studying the prowess of four-string maestro Billy Sheehan, and you can't go wrong interpreting those old Talas and Mr. Big licks!

We could just summon Mr. Peabody and Sherman and have them jet us back to 1985, because that's likely when this logical successor to "1984" would have landed. I loved the Sammy Hagar era and VH went places it never could have gone with Dave. However, in the rock and roll encyclopedia under "Van Halen," you'll see DLR's face front and center.

So let's not hear any whining about "A Different Kind of Truth" being a throwback. Without apology, it is. More than anything, though, "Truth" is a testament to how enduring this band really is.

It also being tradition for all members of the family, friends and neighbors to join in. I may be partially right in regard to it. Lead Singer Justin Furstenfeld came out wearing a hoody and aviator sunglasses, making a heart shape with his hands that the entire crowd quickly reciprocated. Beal: Lofton adds to KRTU’s jazz fete-1950′s Miles Davis tribute

5a16a0708786a24a5b16d50110a92 Beal: Lofton adds to KRTUs jazz fete 1950s Miles Davis tribute

This weekend there’s jazz, there’s an “out of the house” concert and there’s metal. Get busy.Jazz ala Miles When Trinity University’s KRTU kicked off its “Year of Jazz” in October, the station and its community organization partners aimed to stage a well-rounded concert series to showcase the station, the city’s nonprofit organizations and a whole lot of varied jazz. The aim has been true.Saturday the “Year of Jazz” moves to the East Side, to the Jo Long Theatre in the Carver Community Cultural Center, a building that has been a hotbed of jazz for decades. Austin trumpet ace, composer and bandleader Jeff Lofton will present his tribute to Miles Davis and the trumpet legend’s ’50s-era music.Back in the day, when Jo Long, the theater’s namesake and the Carver’s founding director, was on the job, she tried to book Davis at a Carver jazz festival. Long tells the long story well, but the upshot is complex negotiations with the trumpeter broke down for good when Long refused to rent a forklift for Davis. It’s unlikely a forklift will be part of Lofton’s requirements. The much-heralded Lofton and his band, Ray Charles Orchestra alum, noted player and educator James Polk (piano), Tony Bray ( tenor Sax) , Ed Friedland (bass) and Steve Schwelling (drums), will play Davis compositions and other songs made famous during the 1950-1959 part of Davis’ career.During a couple of festival appearances in S.A., Lofton has earned a large, loyal following with a mixture of sheer talent, repertoire and personality. Downbeat is 8 p.m. Admission is free to members of the Carver and KRTU; $15 at the door for others. Out of the house In ’09, music fan and area music supporter Tim Slusher started Riff House Concerts. While house concerts aren’t unusual, Slusher’s are a bit different because he features the singer/songwriter and alternative sides. Some of the acts he’s booked for Riff House are decidedly acoustic, but others are full-on rock bands.Friday, Riff House will move from the house to the stage at Sam’s Burger Joint. Madonna at her best and worst

1329101833 39 Madonna at her best and worst

Madonna performed the half-time show at the Super Bowl. This is a big-deal gig – you play for free but you have an audience of over 100 million, so you pick up plenty of back-end through iTunes, record sales, promotion for upcoming gigs, merchandise and exposure. Certainly exposure was the case in 2004 when Janet Jackson’s wardrobe “malfunctioned” or however that setup was euphemistically explained away. Since then the Super Bowl has had Prince, The Rolling Stones, The Two (aka what’s left of The Who), Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band, Sir Paul McCartney and, erm, The Black Eyed Peas – so pretty big names whichever way you look at it.

Madonna has been added to that list. She was nervous beforehand. She took the time to finally say something about Lady Gaga (she called Gaga’s new video “reductive” and promptly told the questioning interviewer to “look it up” when asked if that was a good thing or not). Perfect timing from Madonna. Speak up about your replacement in time to pimp your own Super Bowl appearance. You’d have to argue, in that sense, she’s still got it.

There seem to be two schools of thought about Madonna 2012. The first camp believes she should have given up in either 2000, 1998, 1992, 1989 or 1986 – depending of course on whether you stuck it out for Music, Ray of Light, Erotica, Like a Prayer, or figured the cracks (in her voice, rather than the Plaster of Paris that has re-cemented her face) were showing by the time of True Blue.

The second camp believes that she’s doing remarkably well to be a pop star at the age of 45 or 50 or 53.

Pop is a young person’s game – and that is why it is always evolving, fads and trends come and go and we should remember that The Rolling Stones were pop stars and haven’t been in a long time and only Mick Jagger occasionally suffers delusions of grandeur/grand-parentage (Super Heavy).

You cannot stay in the pop game as an oldie – and this is just a fact. Much has always been made about Madonna’s reinvention but I think that, for the longest time, she’s been playing the sad, sour shrew determined to be the aging, leathery queen of pop music (and an Ice Queen to boot) despite the fact that she really hasn’t done anything herself to remain relevant or interesting in music since 1990. She could have given up then. She probably should have. And I say that acknowledging that 1998′s Ray of Light is a gem, one of her finest albums. And that the follow-up, Music, wasn’t too shabby either. This didn’t have a lot to do with Madonna. This had more to do with producers, production and songwriting. Every time Madonna came back to save pop it didn’t really need saving, it needed improving. It’s questionable as to whether she – herself – ever did this.

It ended for me (give or take the odd listen to Ray of Light and Music) with the Like a Prayer album and the singles Vogue and Justify My Love.

Need proof? Line up The Immaculate Collection and then GHV2 (her second “hits” compilation). Big difference.

But if you are happy with the second decade of Madonna’s career – then fair enough. This third decade (and now on to the fourth – as she releases MDNA next month) has been the same, tired gimmick. She is a grandmother in permanent audition-mode for the role of Frank’n'Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. She is Workout Granny: a living, breathing version of an action figure made in dedication to herself. And for people to simply say she looks great doesn’t really cut it; doesn’t mean anything.

Well she looked as good as she could for the Super Bowl. Which also means she looked old-trying-to-look-relevant; she’d washed her clothes, ironed her face. She was ready to perform a smug, egotistical 12-minute set.

Madonna’s half-time show featured other talent in cameo roles. Nicky Minaj and M.I.A. were in glorified hype-girl/backing singer roles. You could almost see Madonna’s smirk as if to say she had created them, as if to show that she pulled the strings and if she wanted them to bow down to her she could make it happen. Weren’t they essentially doing that just by being there? And Cee Lo Green continued on his path of song-destruction with his one vocal setting: annoying-bellow.

I thought the whole half-time show was, still, pretty slick. There was the odd wobble (Madonna didn’t look too comfortable in those boots; I bet a wardrobe consultant and/or set-designer was “re-positioned” before the end of the second half of the Super Bowl game). But mostly it was sharp. And that’s what Madonna is about – the big song and dance numbers. That is her music. She is the show; she is about the dance as much as she is about the song. I think she looks stupid trying to keep it up despite her obvious fitness – but when is Madonna going to listen to anyone apart from herself?

Those early records are great collections of pop songs – Into the Groove and Like a Prayer are the ones for me – those two songs are her two strokes of genius. Like a Prayer for the video more than the song because in it Madonna is doing what she does/did best as a pop-star: looking and sounding and seeming slutty and confessional and controversial. And that is what worked best for her. She knew that – and she knew how to play it. Now she just seems sad and old and looks silly.

Well, what do you think?

Let’s celebrate the best and worst of Madonna. Did you see the Super Bowl performance? And if so what did you think? Good? Bad? Both? And if not the Super Bowl performance then what do you think was Madonna’s low point in music? When should she have stopped? Or is she still interesting, still capable of making something that will stand up with her best work? And speaking of her best work, what is your favourite Madonna song? Name one that you think is an example of pop genius. There are several contenders but I’m sticking with the two I mentioned. I like the Like a Virgin album too – that’s my favourite album from Madonna; to me she’s a singles artist really (Ray of Light is the anomaly there). The first four albums all have their share of great moments though. So what do you think? What are your favourites from Madonna?Postscript: Someone tweeted during the half-time show, “Vogue is older than some of the players in the locker room”. I guess that was reason enough for Madonna to not just do a greatest hits medley and risk chucking in that sub-par new song.

I believe she has remained a high, consistent standard – it’s not, and never was, Madonna’s job to reinvent pop music. She once said "Pop music is a reflection of the times", and she has always done that as a total package. Of course, any artist as highs and lows over time. That’s part of it. Even then, her worst moments aren’t even as bad as some of the songs immediate contemporaries Prince or MJ have set loose on the public.

My favourite Madonna song changes, but to me, ‘Vogue’ always works. In recent times, ‘Hung Up’ was spectacular, one of her all-time best.

Be advised that The Watercooler is not necessarily videogame related (it usually won’t be), and is often silly, controversial, and/or not safe for work (NSFW). If this type of content frequently offends you, please be aware that I just warned you — if you still click through and get offended, it will be your own stupid fault. Otherwise, please continue…

Bit of an oldie today, but I recently remembered it, and to be honest I think it’s worth remembering. What follows happens to be one of the most catchy songs I have ever heard. It also happens to be the one that is impossible to sing aloud in any sort of public place. Get all settled in, and enjoy (massively NSFW lyrics).

This song also managed to get into the UK top 40 singles chart once. Check out some more videos by the artist as well, they’re all gems.

Think you have something that could be Watercooler material? Send it to me via email: or on Twitter: @greeneggsnam. If your submission gets featured, you will win a prize package full of pride and accomplishment.

Oldies Music – Definitions And History

1328768240 74 Oldies Music – Definitions And History

The term, oldies, refers to both popular music from the 1950s-1970s and the radio format that specializes in this type of music. Golden oldies usually refers to oldies music exclusively from the 1950s-early 1960s. Oldies songs are typically from the R&B, pop and rock music genres but may also include country, movie soundtrack, novelty, and other types of popular music played on the radio from around 1950-on. Pop music genres that had their heyday before the 1950s (e.g., ragtime, big band) are generally considered too old to be included in the oldies radio format. Oldies music radio stations, which typically feature bands and artists such as (to name a few) Elvis Presley, bill Haley, little Richard, Pat Boone, Sam Cooke, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, the Rascals, the Association, the Temptations, the Who, Elton John, and Fleetwood Mac, cover a wide variety of styles including early rock and roll, rockabilly, doo-wop, surf rock, girl groups, the British Invasion, folk rock, psychedelic rock, baroque pop, soul music, Motown, and bubblegum pop. Oldies music also overlaps with classic rock which focuses on the rock music of the late 1960s and 1970s as well as newer music in a similar style.

The phrase, oldies but goodies, was first coined in 1957 by renowned deejay Art Laboe who, at around that time, used to get frequent requests from his listeners for songs from the early 1950s. a central figure in L.a. radio for over half a century, Laboe was the first deejay to play rock and roll on the West Coast and one of the first to play black and white artists on the same show. in 1959, he put together the first LP to feature (mostly older) songs by different artists. this immensely popular compilation album, entitled Oldies but Goodies, stayed on Billboard’s top 100 LP’s chart for over three years and has, to date, spawned some 14 sequels. (Click here for a recent interview with Art Laboe.)

Soon after the release of Laboe’s first Oldies but Goodies album, the phrase, oldies but goodies, became commonplace and by around 1960, people were waxing nostalgic for 1950s doo-wop which was already starting to be classified as oldies. little Caesar And The Romans’ 1961 hit, those Oldies but Goodies (Remind me of You) and its sequel, Memories of those Oldies but Goodies, both pay homage to early doo-wop and doo-wop artists. this wave of nostalgia brought about a doo-wop revival in the early 1960s which was the first of many nostalgia movements in pop music since the term, oldies, was first applied to older pop music.

While golden oldies has remained a constant over the years, the larger body of pop music that we still call oldies today – which is made up of core golden oldies songs plus more modern material – is not fixed but has been gradually expanding forward in time to keep up with changing demographics. Nowadays, oldies music is generally considered to include all of the 1970s, even disco, and the same is expected to be true someday for the music of the 1980s, now often described as retro. Oldies music is also expanding in breadth as thousands of long-forgotten tunes from the 1950s and 1960s that never made the top 40 in their day are being rediscovered and resurrected. Whether because of nostalgia, curiosity, or a genuine love for good music, the oldies format has maintained a huge following and will probably continue to do so for many years to come.

Oldies Music – Definitions And History
