Recall drive for Disco Bay director Brian Dawson

1329749828 93 Recall drive for Disco Bay director Brian Dawson

Contra Costa Supervisor (D-II) Mary Piepho’s appointee to the Discovery Bay Community Services District (DBCSD), Brian Dawson, is under fire…again. After a rough night in late August, Dawson now faces a recall drive backed by three colleagues on the board.

Two years ago David and Mary Piepho turned reason on its head and pushed the combative Dawson for a seat on the DBCSD the family has tried to control for almost a decade. Last fall, with the benefit of having served for a year, and a large — by DBCSD standards— campaign contribution of $1500 from Piepho-pal Tom Koch’s PAC, Dawson managed to get elected, even though Dawson “paid” $1,000 from his campaign fund to his wife for her “services.”

Dawson is widely known to have had multiple issues with his temper that have fr instance taken place in the parking lot after DBCSD meetings and also within the meeting room itself. Then, at the end of August, Dawson was arrested and later charged with criminal spousal abuse and child endangerment. Since, there have been numerous calls for him to step down from the DBCSD. While Dawson has slowly and reluctantly withdrawn from his roles as liaison to the school district and VP of the board, he refuses to step down claiming family and community support.

ThePress had endorsed Dawson last year and is now compelled to call for his resignation. Dawson refuses and the sources say the Piephos (blessed are their names) are said to be advising him to stay on.

Tim Grobaty: Our intrepid contractor nails it this time

1329557829 84 Tim Grobaty: Our intrepid contractor nails it this time

GOOD HELP IS HARD TO FIND: We’re in the midst of a massive renovation of our home’s master suite, an elegant and sprawling hall that’s so large it can hold a king-size bed with enough spare room to accommodate a smallish escritoire. More than 20 years ago, when we overpaid so much for our house that it held the record for most money spent on a dwelling in the Plaza for a decade, our wife told us the master bedroom would have to be redone.

Plus, of course, the living room, the bathrooms, the kitchen and the other bedrooms, of which we’ve lost count.

Doing some mental triage, we decided the room most in need of renovation would be our office. We were a fulltime TV critic back then and we figured that if we didn’t have a nice, private and handsomely appointed place to work, we might lose our “muse,” then our job and then, of course, the house.

We were young and still of some use 20 years ago, so we did most of the work ourself: Built bookshelves and wall units, stripped the popcorn ceiling, painted. We wish we’d filmed it so we could have a record of that glorious time when American Men Built This Country.

We did less work as we got older and wealthier, though we were pressed into considerable and considerably irritating work when we hired a contractor for the kitchen remodel who kept telling us things like “Look at the contract, I never said I’d strip the wallpaper,” so we did that; and “I never said I’d paint,” so we did that; and “You never told me you wanted new moulding after I tore off and threw out the old moulding,” so we did that. Pretty much all he did was knock holes in things and holler at us for doing shoddy work for him. We guess he had a point. Why pay him so much if we’re not going to do his job well?

Anyhow, our original point is we’ve redone everything in the house, even had the backyard built by the intrepid barn designer and constructor and former City Councilman Mike Donelon, but we’ve never fixed up the master bedroom, which, as far back as 20 years ago when it was the most expensive bedroom in the 90808, needed new carpeting. Plus, it had that Disco-era popcorn acoustical ceiling, which must have looked good to someone at some point in history. And a patched-up hole in the wall where an air conditioner used to be. And wallpaper that looked like it was in “Deadwood.” And closet doors that looked like they’d been in a saloon fight.

Even so, we might not’ve even got around to fixing it up now if we didn’t just feel like having Donelon around again. Most people, they get lonely, they buy a cat or join a church group. We hire a contractor to hang out with us. And, even if we were good at building things, we couldn’t build a better contractor than Donelon, who also, as you might’ve heard, gets skate parks built all over town. He and his helper Pedro Chavez (yes, a sk8ter) have been making a little latter-day showcase out of the room – even installing moulding and fixing chairs. And all this without a contract.

We’re starting to think only crooked contractors use contracts.

We’re not mentioning his fine work in what would be a doomed effort to get him to cut us some slack on the price. In fact, he charges us $12.50 just for using his name without prior notification and permission. We’re actually losing money writing this. We’re just saying you should think about hiring him when we’re through with him, which might be a while yet, because the hardwood floors in the living room are warping like crazy after the idiot carpet cleaners were here at Christmas. They won’t fix it; we signed a contract.

PEARL AT ELDO: Our next Monday Q&A is with the Father of Long Beach Blues, Bernie Pearl. You can look around this town all week for a more experienced bluesman than Pearl, but don’t waste your time doing that, because a) you won’t find one, and b) you’ll miss his show tonight at 8 at the El Dorado Restaurant & Lounge.

The old-time Eldo is becoming quite the roadhouse these days, trading in its decades-long steak-and-lobster and piano-bar image for burgers and tacos and some fine hometown blues and dancing.

Pearl, who has accompanied some of the greatest blues artists of all time – we’re saving the big names for Monday – has sat in on some blues jam sessions at the El Dorado, but tonight’s his first show at the club with his band.

There’s no cover, but tote along some money because every Thursday is $5 cheeseburger & fries night at the Eldo, which you’ll find at 3014 Studebaker Road, at Spring Street, in Long Beach.

Truly Madly Disco Kids (1 x 60′) – A behind-the-scenes look at the dazzling and intensely competitive world of children’s freestyle disco. A booming phenomenon which was invented just 23 years ago, freestyle disco is the fastest and most furious form of competitive dancing, where the costumes are as vivid and flamboyant as possible and the moves push the dancers to their physical limits.

In the unlikeliest of places, from scout huts to nightclub venues, children as young as four are contorting their little bodies for moves the original disco divas could not have dreamt of. And they’re doing it for one aim – to be crowned the ‘Disco Kid’ at the illustrious Blackpool Tower ballroom.

The documentary follows five hopefuls and their families in the most competitive age brackets, the under tens, as they prepare for the biggest challenge of their lives – to knock the reigning disco kid off the top spot.

After months of endless training, the search for the perfect dance partner, and the financial sacrifices made all in the name of getting to the Top of the Tower, will the grand finale await any of the young boys and girls desperate to succeed?

The Office Recap: Florida Facts

1329205026 43 The Office Recap: Florida Facts

Last week was filled with lots of plot development for The Office, both in-text and real world. Compared to Dwight possibly becoming a father and Jim possibly growing as a character, the main story line in last night’s episode — Andy and Dwight fighting over who got to go on special assignment in Florida — felt like wheel spinning, but there were also story elements being put in to place that should pay off later. Also, it was pretty funny, which always helps.

The writing staff of The Office loves to take their time with story lines (it took Jim and Pam three years to get together, Holly was absent from the show for more than a year, etc.), and one would assume they hate burning through an overarching plotline too quickly and having to struggle to fill space. (It’s happened more than once. But let’s not talk about the Café Disco or Dwight’s Gym.) All worthwhile shows need to find a balance between long-term storytelling that makes the audience invested in the emotional development of the characters and episodic intrigue, but The Office especially suffers when there’s a sense that it isn’t going anywhere. (A fine subtext for a program about the banality of the modern work experience and a terrible feeling to have when you’re actually watching.) As such, it was both frustrating and deeply out of character that last week’s revelation about Dwight’s baby/”the collective Dunder Mifflin family baby” was confined to a few one-liners, as there’s no way that that Dwight, never known to observe social niceties or be timid when everything else is going perfectenschlag, wouldn’t have already stolen some of Philip’s DNA for a paternity test. Clearly, we have to wait until later in the season when Angela brings the kid in for that. (I’ll bet a Sabre printer he steals a diaper.)

The second half of the season has not only seen a renewed attempt at character and arc development, it’s just generally been funnier on a joke-by-joke basis. It can’t quite shake the cutes completely and went a frog too far last night, but there’s a real sense that the writers are starting to find their footing a bit in the post–Michael Scott era, and Amelie Gillette’s script landed some solid bits, perhaps none better than Ryan’s dickish insistence that he and Kelly not have to go to Florida together. Though Kevin’s “sometimes Batman’s gotta take off his cape” comes close. The main story line involved Dwight getting sent to Tallahassee to help Sabre set up a series of shops. It’s unlikely that Dwight would get this assignment after he was blown off by Robert just a few weeks ago, and Sabre-based plotlines usually feel like halfhearted attempts to shake up the status quo, but let’s just go with it.

Dwight picked the team he wanted to take, Andy insisted on another team, Dwight got mad, and then realized his team wasn’t so bad, as Ryan, “is capable of surprises” and Erin is “an excellent follower.” That was about it, really, but it was worth it for Dwight’s attempts to bully the doo-nothings and idiots off his team via forcing them to confront the old-person filled hell that is the Sunshine State, even if noted Tommy Bahama/Burn Notice fan Stanley would not be intimidated. As a native Floridian, I was thrilled to see the cultural luminaries (Casey Anthony, Katherine Harris) and achievements (“Florida facts: Scarfaces, Heat Strokes, Theme Parks, Brooke Hogan, Sink Holes, Morbidly Obese People, Geriatric Capital of the World”) of my birthplace so well represented.  The preparation for the Florida field trip was slight but amiable enough, and it looks like it’s going to push along two bubbling plot points.

The first is that Erin, still sad that Andy is with still-not-a-character-Jessica, decides that she’s going to go to Florida and stay there. As always, Ellie Kemper does a fine job of playing her character’s need to stay upbeat at all times against a frustration and sadness she doesn’t know how to acknowledge. Though it’s still doesn’t feel emotionally true that Erin, after years of back-and-forth, would still have a torch for Andy, her understated wince at his suggestion that it wouldn’t be hard to find somebody to fill in for her was pretty heartbreaking. I wonder how long it’s going to take Nard Dog to come down to Florida to bring her back? (I’ll go ahead and guess about six more episodes. Eight if the season gets supersized.)

Secondly, it looks like the writing staff, after realizing that Lindsay Broad is still on the payroll, have decided to actually do something with “probably not a totally useless enigma” Kathy after a series of lampshade hangings about her superfluous nature. (Meredith’s outrage that “Kathy gets to go? Why does she even still work here? Pam is back!” being the best, with Dwight’s simply asking her what her name is being perhaps a bit too meta.) As first noted back in the pool orgy, Kathy has a thing for Jim and looks intent on jumping his bones while in Tallahassee, as she has the inside scoop on his marital woes and there isn’t anything else to do there. That Kathy would have to be pretty dumb to say that in front of a documentary crew, and will have to be even dumber to try to seduce him in front of one is the sort of thing you just have to learn not to think about too hard in this show, unless she’s purposely being set up as one of those people that likes being the villain in a reality TV show, which would at least be a novel twist.

Over in the B-plot, Daryl’s awkward dance with Val continues, even though there’s no way he wouldn’t have just made a move at this point. But as contrived as this drawn-out courtship is, this story gave Craig Robinson the chance to show how adorable he can be when he’s acting all shy and mooney and bewildered about what the beanie Val knitted for him Really Means. Turns out she just likes to knit, don’t hate. (Or really?) After Daryl realizes that Val gave everyone in the warehouse a hat, he impulsively gives her gift to Nate, who almost steals the episode with his reaction. (“It’s so elegant, how did you know?”) Craig Robinson has had to make a lot of “Daryl is frustrated and annoyed” faces over the years, but he really hit a new plateau when Nate offered him a Natpon for a Tickle Monster Attack in return for his thoughtful gift. Daryl is distraught when Val’s boyfriend calls to get the address for where he can send flowers (way to wait until the last minute, dude), and perks up when she denies having a boyfriend, only a mom with a deep voice. Just get these two together already. Not every ongoing plotline needs to last all season.

Halftime review: Madonna finds groove

1329077827 24 Halftime review: Madonna finds groove

Madonna took Super Bowl halftime viewers to ancient Rome, a disco, a football game and to church during her much-anticipated performance Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The 12-minute show gained momentum at each stop — culminating with a duet of “Like a Prayer” with Cee-Lo Green.

Madonna and Green appeared to sing this song, in contrast to lip-synced renditions of “Vogue,” “Music” and “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” that came before.

Green wasn’t the only guest whose career began years after Madonna emerged as a superstar in the 1980s.

LMFAO, a carefree duo of techno-pop hedonists, joined Madonna during “Music” — a 2000 chart-topper that celebrates the power of a hit record.

No song has been more ubiquitous during Super Bowl XLVI week than LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” which was cheered inside the stadium when Redfoo and Sky Blu mimed lyrics within a “Music” remix.

From the disco context of “Music,” the production moved to a football theme for Madonna’s new song “Give Me All Your Luvin.’ ” Guest rappers Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. wore cheerleader uniforms and lip-synced their respective rhymes.

M.I.A. made little effort to match her mouth to the words being heard on TV and in the stadium. The Associated Press reported that M.I.A. extended a middle finger in apparent defiance as an edit blurred her original use of an expletive in the song.

Controversy aside, “Luvin’ ” is a harmless confection suggestive of 1980s pop — not as sung by Madonna but as recorded by the Go-Go’s.

Madonna launched the program with a solo rendition of “Vogue,” which featured the 53-year-old entertainer sitting on a golden throne and being carried aloft by men portraying gladiators.

Once on her feet, Madonna struggled with some dance steps. And the lip-syncing component made the royalty-themed production an empty exercise.

When Madonna’s halftime show eventually rallied, Indiana musicians played a role.

Drummers from Avon, Center Grove, Franklin Central and Fishers high schools marched and hammered the transition from “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” to “Like a Prayer.”

And members of the Butler Chorale and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir joined Madonna and Green to add gospel authenticity to “Like a Prayer.”

At the end of the song, Madonna disappeared in a plume of smoke, completing a stimulating adventure with too little evidence of musical prowess.

Concert can still be very effectual. ?Another problem is eBay is of course that tickets are easy to fake and you wouldn't know until you arrived at the concert that yours wasn't real (by which time they would have closed their account). Music video isn't right for you if you have poor jango music. Yet, that's not that difficult to do. You get to prevent a lot of trouble and nervous tension by May experience when standing in the queue. Even the many, many guitar-tuning breaks he took were rendered, somehow, entertaining. It's very unmistakable since you may need to go from novice to expert fast. But even though, the tickets were sold out very soon enough, many of the people were left behind. You can't use listen to music online to detract from music online listening. My mavens disapproved of that hypothesis and it's precisely what music songs does. DISCO DISCO!

Gotta love this Mortal Combat dance!

Today is DREAM BIG day. I think its healthy to always dream way too big. And to expect unexpected awesomeness. All time. If I put a lot of energy into a certain goal, without having a clue how to reach it… After a while ideas starts to pop up. And also it feels like people and circumstances around me begins getting all cued up and aware of my intentions. I think just walking around, being happy and grateful in advance is the key to an awesome life. You could always strive, strive, strive, doing stuff on auto pilot. Which I often fall into – but its NOT effective.

Of course you’ll always have to put in action, you can’t just sit on your butt and wait for stuff to come to you. But if you’re in a harmonic, easy going mindset everything will become much clearer – you will know what needs to get done and what action steps to take.

Don’t create on default. Put yourself in the right state of mind first, and then reach out to the world. I think this will save both time and energy. And how do you get in there? For me the best way is doing nothing. Close my eyes and fantasize myself away. Seeing vividly things I want to have in my life. Really imagine how it would feel. And then write down thoughts and ideas that comes. Thank for it in advance.

And if you’re uncertain of what you want, which we are all sometimes, then I believe this kind of introspection is even more important. I think we all know deep down inside, what matters for us, and what makes our hearts feel warm. But many times we are way too distracted to notice it.

How about some good old day dreaming?!

The 21 Most Lesbianish Cities in America

1328194627 45 The 21 Most Lesbianish Cities in America

There’s no shortage of “best gay cities” lists, but it recently occurred to us that somebody really ought to make a list of America’s Most Lesbionic Cities. So we gathered a bunch of data to put together this fantastic list which undoubtedly every soul on the planet will agree with 100%. The Advocate’s criteria this year included things like Veronicas concerts and Nude Yoga classes and somehow Grand Rapids made the Top Ten. This might be slightly more accurate than that.

Keywords: Smithies, Out for Reel Film Festival, Pioneer Valley Roller Derby League, Lesbianville, New England Trans United Pride March, Allison Bechdel, Rachel Maddow, Pride & Joy, Sid Vintage, Iron Horse

Northampton‘s got more lesbians per capita than any town or city in the entire country, and that’s not even counting the transient students from Lez-Heaven Smith College or Mount Holyoke in nearby South Hadley. There are 40.31 same-sex couples per 1,000 households here. The birthplace of Rachel Maddow’s career, this cozy politically progressive college town is home to its own lesbian dance club (Diva’s), LGBT bookstore, LGBT newspaper and a sweet LGBT film series, Out For Reel. Amherst ensconces U-Mass, Lezzified Hippie Festival of Education Hampshire College and, obviously, Amherst. Vegan restaurants abound. Plus, it’s Massachusetts which means same-sex marriage is legal.

Keywords: Ginger’s, Nation, Choice Cunts, Stonewall, GO! Magazine, Autostraddle, Eileen Myles, Dyke Slope, Cattyshack, Cubbyhole, Newfest, Logo, Women’s Herstory Archives, Rodeo Disco, Ali Forney Center, The Center, Henrietta Hudson

Autostraddle got born in New York and it got born in New York for a reason — ’cause the city is chock-full of dykes. New York City’s got more gays & lesbians up inside it than any other city in the country and the diversity of the LGBTQ scene and the anonymity afforded by NYC’s masses make it a prime location for one to spread one’s newly-queer wings. Conversely, newly legalized same-sex marriage makes it a nice place to settle down. NYU, The New School, Barnard and Columbia are chock-full of lesbians, as is nearby Sarah Lawrence. There are resources/activity groups for everyone of every sexual proclivity, gender identity, political passion and yoga style preference. Although Manhattan’s West Village and Chelsea neighborhoods have become largely male-centric spaces, lesbians have made gayborhoods of their own in areas like Park Slope, Red Hook, East Harlem and West Harlem. Nightlife is always evolving as some clubs close and new nights crop up, from Cubbyhole to Choice Cunts to Lovergirl. However everything is super fucking expensive all the time.

Keywords: LA Gay & Lesbian Center, The L Word, The Abbey, The Real L Word, Truck Stop, Gimme Sugar, Ellen DeGeneres, Gay in LA, Silver Lake, Urth Cafe, Booby Trap, Girlbar, Ellen, Fusion: LGBT People of Color Film Festival, Hamburger Mary’s, Dyke Day LA

There are lesbians that loathe the fuck out of this city and there are those that love every inch of it’s burning hot hub of lezzer lezdom and those in the latter group seem to have a pretty good time here. It never snows, there are girl parties nearly every night, and the place is teeming with creative women looking to collaborate with other strange geniuses. The city that birthed The L Word has been birthing power lesbians and stylish young dykes for generations. As the hub of the uber-liberal entertainment industry, Outfest and The LGBT People of Color Film Festival, The GLAAD Awards, The Power UP! Awards are all held here.

West Hollywood specifically has a population of about 39,000 and 1/3 of that population is LGBT, so there’s a good chance your Coffee Bean barista and/or Hamburger Mary’s waitress swings your way. Their lesbian nightlife tradition kicked off in the 1920′s with the radical bohemian glamorous lesbian parties at WeHo’s Gardens of Allah Hotel.

Also worth mentioning — Long Beach! It’s about 30 minutes from LA and is often overlooked, despite having its own thriving LGBT community. There’s Long Beach Pride, The Long Beach LGBT Center and the Long Beach Q Festival. Long Beach is actually 8.1% GLBs, which makes it the 10th most-LGB-populated city.

Keywords: Harvey Milk, The Lex, Michelle Tea, The Castro, Dinah in Color, Original Plumbing, Good Vibrations, The Frameline Festival, The Advocate, Curve Magazine, The Mission, Valencia, The Lusty Lady, The Crib, Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project

Everybody knows that San Francisco is Queer Utopia (and especially trans-friendly) but you probably knew that even before you saw Milk. The Bay Area is notoriously liberal and stocked with political activists, innovative writers and gender outlaws — in fact, LGBTQ culture is practically the dominant culture here, regardless of the fact that so many heterosexuals share the space. Seriously – so much queer shit to do.

However, 60% of San Francisco’s same-sex couples are men. Meanwhile, Oakland is on the up-and-up when it comes to lady-queerness. The Gay & Lesbian Atlas, using numbers from the 2000 Census, determined Oakland had the highest concentration of lesbian couples in the entire country. It’s an affordable alternative to San Francisco with its own mixed LGBT dive bar (The White Horse), a lesbian-owned bookstore (Laurel), its own pride, its own monthly gay dance party (Hella Gay) and a Black LGBT Film Festival. Queer collegians or academics can be found at San Francisco State, University of California-Berkeley, Mills and Stanford, among others.

You can hold hands with anyone you want, just remember to recycle!

Keywords: Machine/Dyke Night, The Bay Windows, Edge Boston, Boston LGBT Film Festival, Bisexual Resource Center, Keshet for the Jewish LGBT community, Queer Women of Color, Queer Asian Pacific-Islander Alliance, LGBT Youth Alliance, Fenway Health Center

In the 19th century, people used the term “Boston Marriages” to describe the middle-to-upper-class educated ladies who lived together as couples in the city after graduating from one of the city’s many Universities. Nowadays, ladies who wanna marry ladies can just do so and they can use the term “marriage.” This area has the largest lesbian community nationwide and is one place where gay ladies outnumber men. Cambridge is home to 41 LGBT-owned businesses, and the bounty of LGBT-friendly schools in the area are a huge draw: Simmons (all-girls), Brandeis, Harvard, Emerson and MIT.

Keywords: The Reeling Film Festival, Boystown, Andersonville, The Center on Halsted, The Deaf Lesbian Festival, Big Chicks, Watra Thursdays, Early 2 Bed, Towertown, Out in Chicago

Chicagostraddlers are perhaps Autostraddle’s most passionate meet-up group and as one of the first cities in the country to attract a lesbian scene way back in the Post World War I era — the first gay rights organization in the US was founded here in 1924.

Northwestern University is in nearby Evanston, and our LGBT College Guide Northwestern U Reviewer promises that “if you’re willing to sit through the first awkward five minutes of a Chicagostraddlers meetup, you will be rewarded with a wonderfully diverse queer posse who will accompany you to derby matches, lady arm wrestling, chicken and waffles, Pride, FKA at Big Chick’s, brunch at the Chicago Diner, and pretty much anything involving alternative lifestyle haircuts/flasks.”

Keywords: OutWest Bar, Lesbian Resource Center, Babeland, Dan Savage, RE-Bar, Capitol Hill, Neighbours, The Seattle Lesbian, The Stranger, Ingersoll Gender Center, The Dorian Society

Seattle! Where computer software, coffee and grunge music were born! A lot of people live in Seattle and a lot of those people are lesbians — 12.9% of the city’s residents identify as LGBT. Seattle’s dedicated lesbian bar is called Wildrose, its completely-devoted-to-LGBT-film cinema is called The Three Dollar Bill Cinema (it hosts both a Transgender and a Gay & Lesbian Film Festival annually) and its Roller Derby League is called Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls. The city’s also super trans-friendly — The Ingersoll Gender Center has been holding at least one peer-support meeting for trans, genderqueer and otherwise gender-variant folks per week since 1976.

Portland is super queer. It’s quirky, liberal, laid back, and home to a lot of trees and mountains and bodies of water and beaches and wineries and bookstores and farmers markets. Home to AS’s Tech Editor Taylor and the 8th-most Autostraddler-populated city in the country, The Rose City is more than just the name of that sweet Portland Queer anthology Gabby has a story in. In 2008, it was the first big metropolitan city to elect a homo to be their mayor!

I feel like there are about twenty different DCs and one of them is hella gay (though nobody says “hella” there). I mean, there’s the politics and the activism, and also American, The University That Birthed Two Autostraddle Writers, Katrina and Carmen, the latter of whom describes American as “dyke paradise.” Clearly it headquarters a lot of political activism groups and events, as well as a vibrant Gayborhood in Dupont Circle. The first-ever Dyke March happened here in 1993. [Sidenote: a 2007 DC Public School Survey of High School students found 13.2% of young women identifying as lesbian, bisexual or unsure, which is kinda a lot.]

Texas’s government may treat gays abysmally, but Austin is a countercultural liberal breath of fresh air best known for its indie music scene, awesome BQQ and the annual South by Southwest music/film/interactive festival. I mean, there’s a special Yoga class for Genderqueers, The Texas Gay Rodeo Association, The Kings and Things Drag King Group, and an active “e-mail based social network” called Foodies that organizes regular lay-dee get togethers. The lesbian social scene is “lively” and residents find queer life uniquely blended in to the dominant Austin culture in a super-special way.

Keywords: Film Out San Diego, FlawLes, Girlfest, SDGLN, Diversionary Theater, Kickball Tournament, San Diego Derby Dolls, The Lambda Archives

San Diego has a big military population and is known to be politically conservative than the other California spots on this list, but it’s still super gay. Gays have been taking over the Hillcrest neighborhood since the 1970s and San Diego’s got the nation’s second-oldest LGBT community center, The Film Out San Diego Festival and several of its own LGBT publications including SDGLN and the lesbian FlawLes Media Company.

Much like Ann Arbor (#14), Madison‘s uber-liberal University keeps things temperate for lesbians in its home swing state. I mean, there’s an entire neighborhood endearingly referred to by locals as “Dyke Heights.” Fruit Fest, an all-ages all-day block party featuring live music and local artists and performers as well as a a 5K run, will celebrate its third year this summer (read all about it on Indie Queer). The 5K raises money for a scholarship fund given to an LGBTQA activist in high school or college.

According to our University of Minnesota correspondent “the stereotypical Minneapolis queer lady has piercings and lots of bicycle gear” and rumor has it the best place to meet a lady is at a game of WNBA team Minnesota Lynx. Also you can find ladies at nearby Carleton College. Did you know Sick of Sarah is from here? NOW YOU DO.

Philadelphia has been pursuing the LGBT travel dollar for several years now ’cause it’s just that great to be gay there and not jut for boys — Sisters is Philly’s three-floor dedicated lesbian bar in the heart of the Gayborhood and lesbian couple Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran own and operate six successful businesses on 13th street. Only a hop, skip and a jump away at Bryn Mawr, girl-on-girl culture abounds.

Temple graduate and Autostraddle Teamster Laura notes that “it’s a small city, but it’s got a whole lot of queer per capita (caveat: Philly’s also more hip per capita than most cities so be prepared to play lots of games of “hipster or gay?”). You’re just as likely to run across a kindred spirit at First Fridays as you are at OutFest. If Temple’s where you end up and you just can’t handle another intensely sweaty underage night at Woody’s, I’m sure the Philadelphia Autoteam would be thrilled to show you around.”

Fun fact: 70% of the town’s same-sex couples are female! Uber-liberal University of Michigan was described by our LGBT College Correspondent as “a mecca for LGBTQA-Z students.” Ann Arbor and the University leans dramatically left, so there’s a lot of independent businesses and political activism here, as well as a dedicated LGBT bar/restaurant The Aùt Bar, gay bookstore Common Language, gay nights at Necto, two art-house cinemas and one independent film festival. Nearby Inkster hosts lesbian bar Stilleto’s, and Detroit Suburb Royal Oak has lots for queers too.

It’s the capital of the Homosexual South, but some report it’s much more gay-boy friendly than it is gay-girl friendly. Regardless, Atlanta’s lesbian community is mega-diverse, My Sister’s Room is consistently recognized as being one of the best lesbian bars in the country and the famous Outwrite Bookstore still exists (well, kinda). Nearby Decatur is commonly known as “Dykecatur,” which sounds like a lesbian dinosaur.

Denver’s Gay & Lesbian Center kicks serious ass. And although that whole area of the country is often written off as being legally unfriendly to gays, that’s not so in Colorado — The Rights Five Campaign has the lowdown on Five Laws (including ENDA) that “enrich and protect the lives of LGBT people.”

Houston’s the largest city in the country with an openly gay mayor, the 12th most populated-with-gays US city and it’s also just one of the largest cities in the country, period. A string of unseemly governors have no powers against Houston’s thriving community and legendarily enormous Pride parade. Chances, one of the largest lesbian bars in the world, recently shut down; but there’s still drinks to be had at places like Blur, The Usual and F Bar and additional queer activities happening at the Houston LGBT Youth Center, The Houston GLBT Political Caucus and Houston’s LGBT film festival, QFest. Houston’s Rice University has a healthy queer community as well.

This tiny upstate New York town is best known for its two major universities, Ithaca and Cornell. It’s filled with hippies, good food, beautiful nature, wine and other stuff like that. Perhaps you wanna participate in a Lesbian Potluck or a Guerilla Queer Bar takeover. If you wanna travel there, here’s some special tips from our photoblogger.

Miami is home to one of the country’s most successful lesbian event-planning companies, Pandora Events (responsible for Orlando’s Girls in Wonderland and Las Vegas’s Shedonism, among others) as well as the awesome non-profit Aqua Foundation for Women. South Beach hosts lots of LGBT parties, including (obviously) Pride, The Women’s Winter Party and Aquagirl. Also, South Beach supports its own lesbian glossy, She Magazine.

OH-Hi-OH!?! Ohio Womyn’s Festival is apparently “Ohio’s best kept secret.” There’s heaps of activism going on in Columbus, through groups like Stonewall Columbus, Equality Ohio and TransOhio. Ohio State is a Big Ten School with a serious Greek System Situation, but it’s also queer-friendly with lots of different LGBTQA student groups.

Dear Santa, one disco ball, please

1326919027 48 Dear Santa, one disco ball, please

I haven’t written in a while, say, a few decades. But recently, my favorite toy split in half. It smashed to smithereens at a friend’s Halloween bash (really, it was worth the sacrifice) – and well, I just had to see if you’d consider my request.

Let me take you back, Santa. Remember when I was in the fourth grade and how my buddies wanted a baseball, basketball or football for Christmas?

Not me. I wanted a disco ball.

As a kid, I remember being starstruck seeing one spinning madly during the dollar dance at an older cousin’s wedding. It was a most hypnotic moment as that magnificent mirrored ball splattered the dance hall with shiny diamondlike reflections. I had to have one, but at age 10, it wasn’t meant to be. Neither was the trampoline, high on my list that year, too.

Some 25 years later, I finally got my own disco ball. But here’s the thing, Santa. That ball is now a puzzle of broken parts patched together. I bought it as a prop for my one-man show “Confessions of a Former Disco Maniac” that channels my rebellion during the late 1970s. But mostly, Santa – and more important – it’s about what writing and the people who have allowed me to tell their stories with readers have taught me about myself.

I’ve shared my work – stories of struggle, sacrifice and survival coupled with a lot of humor because you gotta laugh, Santa – with students, other journalists and professional groups across the country.

And that darn disco ball has backed me up, spinning above my head as I candidly talk about my first job as a police-beat reporter (my mom had to drive me to crime scenes because I didn’t know how to drive), a stranger who became a friend and died from complications of AIDS, big hair in Texas, covering 9/11 during New York Fashion Week, my favorite teacher in the world and my disco heyday.

I know – the era was an error.

But I was fresh out of Trinity University and landed my first job as a police-beat reporter, and I also had the fervor for Saturday night fever, especially after my nighttime shift of reporting on mayhem in the big city.

To relax (honestly!), I got lost – dancing under many a disco ball – in the nightly music that helped me celebrate another day of “Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.”

I confess, Santa. I was a disco fool. Destination: Funky Town. Mission: To Ring My Bell and Get Down Tonight at a Disco Inferno. Because that’s the way I liked it. Uh-huh, uh-huh.

OK, you get the drift, Santa, which brings me back to my humble appeal for a new disco ball.

You see, come March I’ve been invited to present my “Confessions” show in Atlanta at the Editor’s Forum, a group of national and international university magazine editors. They’ve heard about my “have disco ball, will travel” approach to life.

And Santa, this ball has logged many miles and memories: Hollywood, New York, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Reston, Wilmington, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., throughout Canada (they love this ball in Toronto, Ottawa and Nova Scotia) and many more places.

Truth be told, the disco ball weathered its damage. It has been dropped, kicked and rolled, accidentally, down stairs has split in half and is scarred with broken mirrored squares. It has been doctored with tape and glue.

I’ve whispered many prayers that it would make it through one more show or party (it’s a hit in the kitchen).

But unlike Gloria Gaynor’s disco anthem of survival, my disco ball hasn’t.

I need a replacement, Santa. And besides, I’ve sorta outgrown a trampoline.

I might need to make a couple of choices on concert in the future. I come from an eclectic background and there are new music resources galore on the Internet.
