Giants Fan Salsa Dances At UMASS – Is Sucker Punch For The Trouble

1329568631 67 Giants Fan Salsa Dances At UMASS – Is Sucker Punch For The Trouble

MASSACHUSETTS – An unidentified New York Giants fan, wearing a Victor Cruz jersey thought it was a nifty idea to salsa dance during a riot at UMASS, after the Patriots took an L in the Superbowl. After the dance, their was some words exchange, and he is sucker punched in the back of the head, by a Patriots fan. What appears to be undercover cops arrive at the scene, and quickly whisk him away, before other fans decide to join in. When one views this video,  you can clearly see that this young man has the rhythm of a turtle. I do not know what is worse, his attempt at salsa dancing or the sucker punch. I’ll go with his horrible rendition of Cruz’s end zone celebration. I know I’m wrong for saying this, but sue me. Maybe that pop in the back of the head will dramatically make him gain some rhythm when he tries to salsa dance again.  Oh, and never disclose your “true colors” so to speak during a sports riot in a crowd of the opposing team fans; it just never ends well. Check out the video and watch the slow motion version of his dance. It is painstaking hilarious and down right dreadful at the same time.

1329291428 13 Article Promotion » Exercise Thru Dancingby Denny Vesperman

Is a dance fitness workout really worth the effort to create a fitness workout routine? The answer is absolutely yes. The art of dancing in its movement, energy and design has ancient roots as a form of celebration, entertainment, courtship, religious ceremony and tribalism in many world cultures. Although it is a very rigorous exercise method, a dance fitness workout has only been recently viewed for its overall fitness benefits. This may in part be because most of us have revered dancing as a fun and social activity, but in truth it is just as beneficial of exercises such as running or basketball.

Recent studies have shown that using a dance fitness workout routine with the aerobic-conditioning effects of dancing create a maximum heart rate increase of up to 65-85 percent in dancers after doing such dances as the samba, the polka, swing dances, or the Viennese waltz. Many folk dances are also highly aerobic and can increase your maximum heart rate up to 85 percent or higher. Dancing as an exercise not only proves to benefit cardiovascular health, it also entails many body shaping benefits and will create weight loss. If you dance regularly, you can expect to see these results.

Your lower body will begin to show muscle tone, especially your calves, thighs, buttocks, abdomen and hips from using a dance fitness workout routine. You will also strengthen the major muscle groups of your lower body, including your hamstrings, quadriceps and gluteus. Some dance moves that that involve having a partner to pull forward such as in Swing dancing, work the triceps, biceps, deltoids and pectoral muscles.

If you chose a dance fitness workout routine such as Country line, folk, jazz, swing, samba, salsa, polka and tap dancing you can expect to lose weight and improve your cardiovascular health. Other forms of dance, such as modern or ballet dancing can be aerobic depending on the moves and tempo.

Psychological benefits of dancing have shown that dancers usually exhibit more confidence and security and are usually more creative, coordinated, exhilarated, intelligent and energetic than that of their non-dancing counterparts. This state of being can perhaps be attributed to the required levels of concentration, creativity and social interaction that is involved in the art of dance.

A dance fitness workout routine also enhances mood and relieves stress while adding more variety to ones life. Most individuals who take up dance make it a lifelong hobby due to the enjoyment of the movement as well as the positive social interaction that is involved in the activity. The best part of this activity is that it makes exercising and losing weight a fun and creative experience one step at a time.

DANCE TEAM Warriors second in kick, third in jazz at conference meet

1328719030 42 DANCE TEAM Warriors second in kick, third in jazz at conference meet

The Brainerd Warriors dance team finished second in kick and third in jazz Saturday in the Central Lakes Conference championship meet at Sauk Rapids Rice High School.

“In kick, we felt really great about our performance and really thought we were going to take the win,” Warriors head coach Cindy Clough said. “Judges felt differently with Sartell the overall favorite.

“I really feel it is hard when Class 2A teams are judged with Class 3A teams. Tech and Brainerd are the only two 2A teams in the conference. The choreography is different in 2A and sometimes hard to be compared, in my estimation. Sartell had great kicks, as did we. Tech was outstanding as well.”

In jazz, Clough thought the Warriors had the best turn day of their season.

“We really landed our turns and were very happy about that,” she said. “Our girls have worked and worked to perfect their technique and we are so proud of the progress we have made.

“We did not have our best day in terms of (routines) being clean. We did not have mistakes but just a bit of offish timing. We felt, difficulty wise, our routine is much harder than Sartell’s. Again, very hard to compare the two classes. They really nailed theirs, however, I felt our turns were much stronger, though scores did not reflect that.”

Brainerd will compete in the section meet Saturday at Elk River.

“That is the meet where everything matters,” said Clough. “It all comes down to how we perform. We will continue to tweak and work on our routines. Our goals this week are to clean kick, work on tightness, timing and energy. We may modify a little choreography in kick, about three details that will help us look a cleaner.

“In jazz, we do have to make some significant changes, which we wish we did not have to. We feel like we have some parts where kids are traveling too far to get to spots and we will have to practice a bit harder this week than we would like to. We would like to be in more of a taper mode, where the kids rehearse but their minds can be on auto pilot.

“We have to do whatever it takes, however, so our week for jazz at least will be challenging. The girls are up for it, however, and have great attitudes. Our strength this year has been their work ethic.”

Ali and Katja show how to lead and follow direction changes in Charleston rhythm.

Here Ali and Katja show how the leaders lead changes of directions in side by side position with basic Charleston footwork (also known as Groove walk footwork).

Key points for leaders:- Make sure that you lean slightly in the direction you want to go with your follow. This way you show your follower with your body where she is supposed to go. This is called putting yourself in a leading position.- Make sure that when you are walking you are very relaxed this way you can tense your body when you want to change direction and the contrast between your relaxed state on tensed state tells the follower that a new direction is coming up.

Key points for followers:- Make sure that you do not lean when yours leader leans to change direction. The best way for you to feel his lean is to stay upright.- But you should always respond to your leaders tension release by tensing up and releasing when your leader does it.

Putin Congratulates Victorious Plushenko

1328053028 46 Putin Congratulates Victorious Plushenko

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin congratulated figure skating star Evgeny Plushenko on Tuesday on his victory in the European Championships.

Plushenko returned from a long break due to injuries and a ban last week, winning his seventh European title with a scintillating tango in the free skate.

“You worked through the free program with brilliance and climbed with confidence to the top step of the European podium,” said Putin, who is widely expected to return to the Kremlin for a third term as president in March elections.

“I know that it really wasn’t easy for you, a lot happened that you had to overcome. But a gold won in a difficult contest is even more valuable and precious,” Putin said in the telegram.

“In Sheffield you proved yourself once again: Sporting success chooses only the most talented, the most motivated and the strongest in spirit.”

The performance vindicated Plushenko’s decision to return to international competition for the first time since winning silver at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics; with the aim of representing Russia at the country’s first Winter Games in Sochi in 2014.

Plushenko has said he will pass up the potential next stage in his comeback, the March world championships in Nice, France, to get much-needed surgery on his left knee in Munich. The ligament damage had the six-time world champion in constant pain during the European Championships.

“I think when I’m gonna be healthy I can skate even better,” Plushenko said after his victory.

He had been absent from the international circuit since Vancouver due to a disqualification over a breach of amateur competition rules and various injuries.

He received special dispensation from skating authorities to take part in Sheffield after failing to accrue enough points in competition this season.

The results bring Russia’s medal haul at the championships to seven after a podium sweep in the pairs on Thursday and a silver and bronze in Friday’s ice dance.

I’ll dance again, says ballet star who quit

1328049430 47 Ill dance again, says ballet star who quitJack Rivlin 30 Jan 2012

The young Ukranian star who quit the Royal Ballet last week has promised he will be back – and will dance again.

Sergei Polunin, 22, shocked the dance world by storming out of the Covent Garden-based company during rehearsals following a row with management.

Friends suggested that he was turning his back on ballet and London – but speaking after his final performance in Ivan Putrov’s Men in Motion at Sadler’s Wells, the dancer said he will return after a holiday in Japan.

“I’m going to Japan in a couple of days. We’ll see if I am allowed back into the country.”

His fellow Ukranian Putrov, who also walked out on the Royal Ballet 18 months ago, further cemented hopes that he would dance again. Asked if the two men would ever dance together Putrov replied: “He’s a very close friend, so I don’t see why not.”

It comes after speculation that Polunin, who became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal dancer at 19, and has been compared to Rudolf Nureyev, was planning to become a tattoo artist at the parlour he half-owns in Holloway.

Last week his friends suggested he didn’t “want to go on dancing” and planned to move away from the capital.

Anthony Lammin, who co-owns Holloway Ink with Polunin, claimed London had “limited” the young dancer. He said: “He just said he’s ready to leave. He didn’t even sound particularly upset, he sounded bored. I guess he’s just achieved so much at a young age.

“London doesn’t let him be an individual: Sergei is just a product of the Royal Ballet.”

He was due to appear in The Dream at the Royal Opera House this week but told bosses he was leaving immediately. But it now appears he has had a partial change of heart about leaving London, where he has lived since leaving Ukraine aged 13.

Fans said they would miss the “gifted and charismatic” performer if he gave up his craft.

Michiko Thornton, 63, said: “I bought tickets for The Dream because I thought he was going to be there. I will still go but I will miss him.”

His performance in Men in Motion was described by the Standard as “thrilling”.

Bison life: Ballroom Club

1328038627 96 Bison life: Ballroom Club

n the era of rising techno, dubstep and dance electronic mixes into music charts it is no surprise that students are pulled into the electrifying beats and hypnotizing dance trances. However, for a group of students at NDSU, dancing is more than any trend. For them, it is a sport, a competition and a drive filled with desires.

“Unlike most other dance clubs, we are a competition club,” a junior majoring in exercise science and president of Ballroom Club, Shane Gores, said. “The [NDSU] dance team is the only other sport organization that is in the same category, except that we are for everyone, men and women.”

The Ballroom Club is made up of a group of students that train, practice and work toward going to ballroom dance events. Students who belong to the club practice with coaches in traditional dance areas, including Waltz, Rumba, Foxtrot, Swing, ChaCha and Tango.

Gores says the practices are meant to get students ready for competition against other colleges and students.

Carly Trowbridge, a first year professional student in the pharmacy program and the club’s treasurer, explains that after completing HNES 126 (Social Dancing), a group of seven students were selected to compete at the Star of the North Ballroom Dance Competition in Minneapolis last February.

“There is a team competition during the evening of the competition in which schools select their best rumba, swing, and foxtrot couples to compete for scholarships. Last year we were the only North Dakota team, other states that were represented were Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa,” Trowbridge said.

After placing at the Star of the North Ballroom Dance Competition, including fourth in novice Waltz and second in novice Foxtrot (Gores and Kelsey Forward) and first in novice Swing (Sammie Nguyen and Quang Phan), the members decided it would be great to begin a new organization on campus, so that others could enjoy the experience.

Gores says that becoming an organization recognized by NDSU was a long process.

“We were getting a sport club started, which qualifies for more funding and support for our competition events. It took me until the winter semester of 2011 to meet all the requirements of student government and get into a meeting with them to have our organization started,” Gores said.

“We became an official club just this last semester,” Trowbridge added enthusiastically.

Trowbridge says the Ballroom Club is different from most dance organizations on campus because it’s supervised by officers who have at least one year of experience in ballroom dancing and because it offers an alternate style of dancing that is not typical to today’s modern music.

“It is a place students can come to learn a variety of really cool dances such as Waltz, Foxtrot, Swing and Rumba, that sometimes gets overlooked today,” Trowbridge said. “Ballroom dancing brings out confidence in students as new skills are acquired, and this confidence not only reflects on their dancing performance, but other aspects of life as well.”

Both Gores and Trowbridge agree that the best part of the club is being able to share their dancing skills and being able to compete as students of NDSU.

“I love being able to have time to sharpen my techniques and to share my knowledge I have acquired over the past year to help others better understand the fundamentals of ballroom dance,” Trowbridge shared. “It’s also so wonderful to meet all of the new people who share this unique interest.”

“Winning at the competition was pretty good too,” Gores added with a smile.

Students who are interested in joining the ballroom club can attend a meeting at the Wellness Center. The club meets every first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:45 p.m. Membership fees are $10. Those interested in checking out the club can participate for $3.

” You do not need to know how to dance, we can and will help you with all the dancing. It is nice if you have experience, but it’s not needed at all. Just have the desire to learn and dance,” Gores said.

The Ballroom Club did a showcase at West Acres’ It’s A Wonderful Night” shopping event this past November and hopes to plan more performances in the upcoming years.

For more information on the ballroom club, students can find their group on Facebook.

‘Fusion’ marks milestone for ATL Ballet, dancer

By Mike Fleming | Mar 26, 2011 | 11:55 AM

brian wallenberg headshot thumb ‘Fusion’ marks milestone for ATL Ballet, dancerThis weekend’s performances of “Fusion” with Atlanta Ballet not only mark a departure for the company that will surprise audiences, the show also heralds the end of an era for a longtime dancer.

Brian Wallenberg (top photo) has been with the troupe for 13 of his 17-year dancing career. He’s also been our go-to guy for a gay perspective on the company’s performances. We most recently spoke to him about Atlanta Ballet’s groundbreaking “Moulin Rouge” and the annual, wacky “Nutty Nutcracker” holiday show.

But “Fusion” isn’t exactly his swan song. He’ll remain with the company in its marketing department, handling all social media and creating online content and videos. Still a young man, Wallenberg will also dance in some special productions like the holiday shows. It’s a chance he jumped at, he says.

“I feel so lucky,” Wallenberg says. “I started dancing when I was 16 and went directly from three years of training into a professional career. I know I can’t dance forever, so this is a great transition. I’m sad, but I’m also excited to stay with the company and the people that I love so much.”

“Fusion” (bottom photo) is not only a great example of a ballet company that thinks outside the box, it’s a high note to go out on and move ahead, Wallenberg asserts.

“’Fusion’ is such an exuberant evening of dance,” he says. “Every piece is so different, unusual and so strong, and it’s absolutely going to blow the audience away. They’ve never seen Atlanta Ballet do this kind of work before.”

“Fusion” is actually three separate choreographed performances. And like the name suggests, they combine disparate elements to create something totally new. “Petal” is a revolutionary exploration of the intersection between traditional ballet and modern dance.

If the concept of “Fusion” is starting to sink in, promos for the show ask “What happens when worlds collide?” That ought to pique some interest as “Lambarena” takes the stage to blend dynamic African rhythms with the traditional stylings of Bach. Try to imagine the possibilities if you can.

“It’s not only the combination of the music, but also a fusion of African dance and classical movements,” Wallenberg says. “It intertwines these two worlds in a totally new way that is really wonderful, and the music is amazing.”

“Rite of Spring” is the centerpiece of the evening, a world premiere original that Wallenberg calls “intense.”

“It’s just three dancers who are all onstage almost the entire time,” he says. “It’s heavy and moving, and it’s something you’ll have to just sit back and take it all in. I’m very interested to see how people react.

“The audience is in for a treat, and they better be ready for the ride,” Wallenberg says.

“Fusion” plays Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cobb Galleria Center.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man they said exposed himself to girls at a dance studio.

Authorities took Brian Harke of Indian Trail into custody on Friday night.

Detectives said Harke pulled his pants down outside of Steps ‘N Motion dance studio last week.

Detectives said Harke walked up to the back door of the studio and caught the eye of a 7-year-old girl who was dancing in a class.

“Then he exposed himself, pulled his pants down and exposed his private parts,” said Capt. Cody Luke with the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Before running away, Luke said the man even winked at the young girl.

“It shows that he’s doing it for some kind of gratification for himself, that he knows exactly what he’s doing,” Luke said.

But deputies are commending the girl for helping them identify an actual suspect.

Detectives said she kept her cool and was able to provide them with details about the man’s physical description and the truck he was driving. Luke called her a brave young woman.

“She’s well beyond her years in how she was able to handle this situation,” Luke said.

A saxophonist and percussionist whose bands played a broad range of R&B and dance music, Jimmy Castor was nicknamed “the Everything Man” because he could play instruments, dance, sing and well, pretty do anything with music.

Born in the Bronx on June 23, 1947 and attended High School of Music and Art, Jimmy Castor was one of the early hip-hop and electronic dance artists.

In the song, “Troglodyte” it had a half-spoken lyric and helped pave the way for rap. He used a character in that song, Bertha Butt, which he would return in future years in more of his songs.

In 1956, Jimmy Castor wrote and recorded his first song, “I Promise to Remember”. Then in 1957 he replaced Frankie Lymon in the The Teenagers. Jimmy Castor started to play saxophone in 1960.

Jimmy Castor’s first chart maker with Smash Records was in 1966 with his song “Hey Leroy, Your Mama’s Callin’ You” that told the story of his mama calling. He then formed The Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1970 with the peak of their careers in 1972 with the release of the album, It’s Just Begun. “It’s Just Begun” was featured in the breakdance battle scene in Flashdance in 1983.

Jimmy Castor helped shape hip-hop stars today. Reported by LATimesBlog, “Those who used Castor’s music, to name but a few, include: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Eric B and Rakim, N.W.A., Big Daddy Kane, Jungle Bros. (the piano riff in “J Beez Comin’ Through”), Beastie Boys (“Hold It, Now Hit It” features a sample of Castor screaming, “Yo, Leroy!”). Castor’s “The Bertha Butt Boogie,” a kinda-sorta sequel to “Troglodyte,” makes an appearance in Ice Cube’s track “Friday.” And Kanye West understood Castor’s allure, using the Jimmy Castor Bunch’s version of “I Just Wanna Stop” to build his early track “We Don’t Care.”
