Freelance advice for the Digital Artist

1329275841 72 Freelance advice for the Digital Artist

The righteous journey is often long and arduous.. It’s a sorry fact that being good ‘isn’t good enough’, so you’ve got to pull up your sleeves and put in some serious promo work to get noticed in this day and age.. The following contains some pointers that I passed on to a friend on DeviantArt, which I employed to become a full time digital artist and lecturer. It’s a huge ugly block of pasted-text, so please blink often!

Mate, it’s all about breaking into a niche..

Here are a few strategies that got me noticed, now I enjoy fairly regular work and I have a fraction of your talent:

Pick out a high-profile musician / author / public figure etc.. contact them and say you would like to produce a free piece for them, under the stipulation that they credit you wherever it is used online. If they like the work, they’ll scream high and low about it and refer others to you. I did this to great effect with a Drum n Bass artist, and his record label even came back to me for paid work later down the line. A lot of ‘up and comers’ aspired to be like this DnB artist, they saw his art, saw my name and many approached me for paid work. I made a great number of connections (and commissions) from one spec job. Once in a blue moon, I still do this – mainly to break into a new arena, I might do it early next year to get a foot in the UK Hip Hop scene.

Whatever your online engagements are, treble them immediately. Promo is like scattering dandelion seeds into the ether, the higher exposure you have (DA, shadowness, twitter etc) the greater chances you have of being seen. There are always people out there seeking ‘the right artist’ – you need to be seen to be found.

You need a real website, with a solid domain and a contact page. The contact page is extremely important as the visitor does not need any type of account (DA / Twitter / FB etc etc) to send you a message or even open up their own email client. This is huge. Online, people have the attention span of goldfish; by removing obstacles you are making a clearer path for potential clients to submit their enquiry. Once the main site is done, everything else bolts on to that. I recommend WordPress, its great.

As soon as I got my act together and sorted my homesite out, the flow of commissions increased.

The vast majority of commissions are repeat clients or word of mouth referrals, which is tough when you just want to get started and gain traction. I’d highly recommend good looking / branded business cards to hand out every single person you ever meet, being that tenacious is a clincher. For the first 4 years of operating, I worked for next to nothing.. however I dont recommend you do that, your work is too good. Price up competitively, offer flat-rates which clients love and find a niche.

Digging into a niche is another one of those hugely important things for lo-rider freelancers like us. If your into any kind of scene (extreme mountain bikes, jazz flute, death metal, video games etc..), be an active part of that community and let everyone know you do art. I did it with Drum n Bass 15 years ago, and continue hard until this day. At one point I achieved a very high profile as a prominent artist in the ‘darkstep dnb’ scene due to my promoting endeavours, and I wasn’t necessarily the best in the biz.

As a fine artist, you may be limited to the kinds of jobs you get.. A lot of clients will expect you to deal with the typography and layout on a lot of things, it may be worth promoting logo design or some other less-engaging discipline to get that work trickling. Im a fine-artist too, but I put on a graphic design hat from time to time (pretty much all the time!) and it opens up a much wider client base. Event flyers are brilliant because they’re jobs set to a deadline, they dont drag on forever like CD album covers. Money aint great, but they sure get you noticed; and the event promoters are a highly networked bunch. A promoter see’s a flyer they like, ask their buddy who done it, then they get referred to you. It’s all very accumulative, if the work turns heads – people will come knocking.

A lot of flyers are very formulaic or type driven these days with 3D flourishes.. I’d argue a rennaissance, with really badass fine-art flyers is very much needed, even if it means utilising previous pieces with typography integrated. The works already there, why not make some cheese off it?

How well do you tag your deviations? You’d be very surprised at the number of clients that use DeviantArt as a search engine for seeking out artists. By ranking highly for specific search terms, you are getting seen and hopefully getting commissioned. Again, this ties in with finding a niche to a certain extent. With my submissions, I usually tag my pieces with “Drum n Bass, DnB, Electro, Raving, Club, Breakbeat etc. etc.” so when promoters or artists search for those terms, my bits rank highly. I also utilise this technique with image titles (when applicable), like ‘Dubstep – Bass Offensive’ / ‘This is Drum n Bass’.

A lot of people argue that art / DA isn’t a popularity contest, and they’re right to a certain extent. If you are looking to earn from your creative endeavours, you definitely need to switch to a different perspective – page views, comments, all that stuff really does count. Any assertive activity that increases engagement and interaction is good for deviation views and ultimately search rankings. Ive observed many of the greats on here employ these strategies, and it really is as simple as replying to comments, thanking for devwatches, commenting on others works. Simple engagement and being amiable goes a long long way.

DeviantArt is like a microcosm of the wider internet.. Take the above mindset and apply it to your primary website – tag well, promote heavily on twitter, discuss, talk and engage. If you can rank positively for certain keywords on Google – then that’s a whole other ball game. I rank well on my name and Im making good steps with my tutorial site, but this is a bigger world that Ive yet to gain a wider understanding of. Those that figure out Google, do very well in life.

Bloody hell, this is a long comment.. Sorry mate!! I want to finish by saying your work is awesome, but I don’t think your stomping in the right markets. For now, music is still a good place for the digital artist, and so are book covers.. Book covers are a bit more elusive though, you kind of need the ‘invite’; but that’s where the social promo comes into play – let them find you. You ever thought of skateboards / snowboards / ipad covers / laptop skins? These are whole other fields that your style is very well suited to – but I’d argue that you get your domain and site running before you make these connections. Professional clients will respond a lot more positively to a homesite as opposed to a social-art profile

Remember.. This is yr1 in your online engagement (judging by DA profile age), it takes a bit of time to get worked into the wider psyche! I hope 2012 treats you better, and Im certain that with the additional elbow grease, your freelancing endeavours will start to increase.

SurrealPSD readers, I promise I will change the site colours very soon. For those that read the post, even through bleeding eyes. I salute you.

Please feel free to share your own experiences in the comments section below.

» Arecibo Spank/Check Point by Bad Tango [Breaks Psybreaks] w/ Free Download / thetruejoe90 – New Music Blog

The music label of psychedelic breakbeat and technological funksters, Broken Robot Records like up and coming talent, and next week we see a debut double AA single EP from their new signing Bad Tango who seems to be able to deliver exactly the kind of psybreaks head-honcho Neurodriver appreciates. This is part of his Frontier Science series.

Kicking off this musical influx of frenetic, synthetic tweaks and bleeps ‘Arecibo Spank’ begins with solid and sinister drum track with a disturbing bass tone bobbing onwards with a medley of carefully calculated choppy, glitch effects appearing to be in total disarray. They come together building up the main groove of the track, and when it does we feel that we have “now landed”. Soon there is a break and we get into a progressive moment. All of the light and dark frequencies scatter at a distance like an explosion in space. The drums clash, the waves build and then the sounds mingle together dropping an extraterrestrial smack in the face, leaving us with a tech-funk bonanza.

The second track pretty much carries on from where the first finishes off. ‘Check Point’ with it’s leccy bassline has a touch of jazz in the bounce and once more an abundance of quivering, electronic pulses braiding with the groove up until middle of the track where we have the broken beat, glitch gala.

To celebrate the forthcoming release Bad Tango has compiled his first ever promo mix which features these tracks and lots of new ones from almost every exclusive artist on the Broken Robot roster including the recent collaboration with Breakspoll 2011 winner, Hedflux. It is up as a free download so grab it by clicking here or snatch it up from the download button within the music player below.

Also for your perusal, being as this is part of the BRR ‘Frontier Science’ I’ve also included the previous volumes in the players below where we have Big Mistake, LuQas & Triple Agent and Peak & Broken Eye consecutively.

‘Arecibo Spank/Check Point’ by Bad Tango will be released on Monday 13th February 2012 by Broken Robot Records.

1. Slack Baba – We Have The Technology [Blue Hour Sounds] 2. Elite force – No Turning Back (Hedflux Remix) [U&A] 3. Bad Tango – Check Point [Broken Robot] 4. 48k – Barb Wired (Bad Tango Remix) [Yellow Finger] 5. Too Dusty – Welcome To The Future (Bad Tango Remix) [Hard & Hits] 6. Nocturnes (evening concerts) on an historic Pleyel pianoforte and piano and cello duets are also on the schedule in the main hall. Be looking for them in 2011. Desmond assisted in writing the songs in the groups third album named lippery When Wet? Music websites is a pleasing approach to increase the amount of music website. Promoters hire artists to create concert fliers, send press releases to local media, purchase ads in newspapers, confirm details as the event approaches and hammer out the logistics as the event gets closer. Aside from the delivery advantage, you'll also get the chance to browse for tickets online no matter what time it is if the day, no matter what day, wherever you are. He edges a hand towards his private regions (not very a Michael Jackson crotch grab, much more like scratching an itch). Dark Psyence Holds Two-Year Anniversary Party

1328528227 22 Dark Psyence Holds Two Year Anniversary Party

For the past two years, record label and promotion company Dark Psyence has busily worked to bring Boise the most happening electronic dance parties.

To celebrate two years of hard-hitting, four-to-the-floor parties and music production, the Psyence crew is hosting Dark Matter: The Dark Psyence Two Year Anniversary Party. Attendees are expected to wear their sexiest science outfit for this science-themed (and potentially science-addled) extravaganza.

The DJ lineup features Dylan Rhymes, a DJ from the United Kingdom who excels at the breakbeat and tech house genres. Other notable acts include local beat craftsmen Psyence Lab and Ziggy D.

The jams will be blasting from two stages until the wee hours of the morning. Additionally, on-site screen printing will enable attendees to fashion their own T-shirts for the totally reasonable price of $2–just make sure to bring your own plain tee to the event. A limited number of compilation CDs filled with Psyence-affiliated bands will be handed out as gifts. Tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com.

This method combines a modern delivery with a minimal amount of cost to give promoters the best chances to lure fans to their shows. Electric Selection – The Forecast

Every January we scatter old bones across a dancefloor and slaughter a raver for their fresh blood to thus determine who’ll be colouring our dance floors. Last year we were talking about L-Vis 1990, Jai Paul, Seams, Pariah and Julio Bashmore. This year we are talking about these ten bright noise mongers.

Eats Everything

One man intent on bringing back electro, Eats Everything has the jacking spirit to nail a renaissance in terse funk. Referencing everyone from Keith Tucker and Directbeat to European treasure like Clone’s Dexter, Daniel Pearce has lit his fire with EPs on Catz And Dogz and Dirtybird. Perhaps his greatest trick is layering old soul samples into his breakdowns before dropping slabs of unstable bass with lazy but razor sharp snares. He is THE party. Expect releases on Pets, Hot Creations, big appearances at WMC and a PMR collaboration. We’re hungry.

Five Years’ Time: Everyone is re-listening to ‘Red Planet’ 12” and Eats Everything is our Martian lord.

Joe And Will Ask

Joe And Will Ask know how to keep an audience eagerly baying for the full rocket ride. As the perennial electro upstarts of the last two years, the buzz around the raw grind of the ‘Mongozo’ EP caught the attention, and the host of follow-up singles for the Gulp Communications and Deadly People labels held it. Big remixes for Groove Armada and Booka Shade have kept their star status in the ascendency. Next year their debut album finally drops. On the strength of the singles, it’ll be worth the wait.

Five Years’ Time: They might even have released a second album. No pressure…

Fatima Al-Qadiri

The gaudy rich-man’s pleasure-zone replete with pillars and plasma screens on the sleeve of her ‘Genre-Specific Xperience’ EP does much to illustrate Fatima Al Qadiri’s overarching vision of synthetic nihilism. Her world is a weird one where Gregorian chant meets pounding steel drums, sweeping oriental synth-soundscapes and ultra-saccharin cyber-pop, all whilst forming the soundtrack to a gang of rap heavyweights pampering themselves in their hip-hop spa. The Kuwait-raised visionary also makes music under her Ayshay alias and explores more pan-cultural frequencies; haunting and ethereal and submerged in harmonic depth.

Five Years’ Time: Fatima al Qadiri will be hosting nudist raves in the deserts of Kuwait.

Ado

With labels like Numbers, Luckyme and a beastly bass sub-culture, it’s safe to say Glasgow has monopolised Scottish dance. Or has it? On the East coast, lies Dundee. Traditionally associated with jute, jam and journalism, now it can add ‘jacking house’. Hailing from “Scumdee”, Ado has be come the DJ DJ’s love, and his ‘Ultra’ EP release has set off ripples, that in 2012 shall soon become waves. Three dancefloor detonators that bleep, boom and bang in all the right places. Boys Noize drops it, Malente wants it, and the mutoid magus himself, Mr. Oizo, has been left declaring “Who’s Ado?”

Five Years’ Time: Kicked out the VIP tent for taking his top off and screaming “Mon then!” at a petrified David Guetta.

Mord Fustang

Another in an endless line of horribly young, frustratingly talented producers, Mord Fustang enjoyed more than your average 2011. Describing his sound as “an adventurously nude fluctuant immaculate rainbow-coated thunderstorm with arpeggios, 1-up mushrooms and disco basslines, plus a wobble or two,” his vocabulary is just as imaginative as his effortlessly decadent tracks. Five singles released through Miles Dyson’s Plasmapool label was a neat seal of approval, taking his place at the top of the Beatport Top 100 with ‘Lick the Rainbow’ was the confirmation. 2012 can’t come quick enough.

Five Years’ Time: The soundtrack to our retro, eye-bleeding game nights. F-Zero X just got better.

Karenn

2011 saw both Blawan and Pariah have exceedingly good years. For 2012 their bass super group delivers emphasis on near-industrial yet skanking techno. A white label 12” led by the track ‘Auflan’ appeared from Basic Channel’s pressing plant. It was credited to their new label called Works The Long Nights and gave us a coarse insight into how few rules this pair will be following. Happily departing from a place near Vogel, Landstrumm and a more frantic LFO, Karenn attack us with stripped-back anger but scratched with obsessive detail. The age of tough shit is back.

Five Years’ Time: Opening a church on the outskirts of Sheffield, dedicated to the living spirit of Mark Bell and Gez Varley.

Daniel Avery

Fabric resident and the current driving force behind the Kill ‘Em All night and label, Daniel Avery’s literally been making noise in all the right places. Remixes for Metronomy, DFA1979 and In Flagranti showcased his ear for “cosmic drones, post-punk angles and mutant new wave” but it was when he finally (partially) stepped out of the booth and into production with the ‘Wrapped In Plastic’ EP indulging in effortlessly insistent tech-tinged indie disco and follow-up, the ‘Rattle’ EP, packing a renewed punch, we only saw one single, prospective star.

Five Years’ Time: When not dominating dancefloors, he’ll be performing a neat side-line in stunt and body double work for Tiga.

Rocketnumbernine

Rocketnumbernine can be broken down relatively simply: one rocking a bank of synths, one surgically hitting a drumkit; the pair bringing the rolling thunder of the infinite. From the glorious Four Tet-associated ‘Matthew & Toby’ to the gargantuan ‘Steel Drummer’ and the skewed ‘Lone Raver’, it’s a seismic dynamic that pulls you deep into the eye of their melodic, post-rock storm. Progressive, indulgent and wonderfully human, the contrast between acoustic drumkit and gleaming electronics gives Rocketnumbernine a wide-eyed honesty you’re either seduced by or in awe of.

Five Years’ Time: A residency in Area 51, tasked with bringing UFOs down-to-earth through sheer force.

Dro Carey

Another young wonderboy bursts forth into our consciousnesss, still yet to even arrive at his twentieth birthday, but already in possession of a deft hand on the controls. Dro Carey, also known as Eugene Hector, makes oddball house music for the solitary late-night listener. His ‘Journey With The Heavy’ EP, out on Ramp Recordings, was a disjointed yet weirdly coherent bout of euphoric awkwardness – think twisting patterns of impulsive melody, deep rolling bass lines enriched with thick fuzz, pin-point analogue drum programming and enough soul and jazz to dissipate the introspective dissonance of his formula-beating vision.

Five Years’ Time: Considering his old-beyond-his-time maturity and sleep deprived sounds, probably napping during Coronation Street.

Deptford Goth

Over-saturation of a certain sound can flood a genre in the most destructive manner. Post-d****p, anyone? Nu-rave madame? A dribble of witch-house on your wobbling blancmange, sir? Yes, bedroom producers are ten thousand a-penny, but don’t let abundance get your ears pissed, and turn them into a pair of dismissive old drunks. Pick out the gems. Deptford Goth is shining. He’s a twenty-seven-year-old teacher’s assistant, that likes to wrench synths of their smoothest sighs, and flit from breakbeat to R‘n’B like a bat in the loft.

Five Years’ Time: He convinces Aphex Twin and Mariah Carey to duet on the series finale of The Len Goodman Show.

Words by Reef Younis, Laura Humphries, Joe Zadeh and Matthew Bennett

I Self Devine, “Mecca” MP3

1327858629 87 I Self Devine, “Mecca” MP3

I Self Devine has been a rapper and community leader for some time. His 2005 record Self Destruction was an underrated slice of thoughtful, politically charged breakbeat-based hip hop. After it, the rapper seemed to disappear for a few years, during which he became more involved in Minneapolis community organizing and the arts. “What I found out is that some of my passion lies with connecting and building with people…I continued to write through that period, and kind of got reinvigorated,” the rapper said in a promotional YouTube. Inspired by his time working on Minneapolis’ south side, the rapper decided to release a series of four ten-track EPs. The first release is entitled LA State of Mind, and it’s about his experiences growing up in the notorious Athens Park neighborhood of LA in the 1980s. It’s available as a free download at the Rhymesayer’s website.

“Mecca,” the EP’s Emazin-produced final track, is one of its strongest. With a strong and distinctive vocal style, I Self Devine discusses his love for his hometown, but the mood feels somewhat ambiguous, uneasy and wistful. It’s that kind of subtlety that suggests Devine’s use of boom-bap isn’t about subcultural positioning, but is instead a personal medium for connecting his story to his audience.

Novalima’s “Karimba” Out January 31 on ESL

1327693033 55 Novalimas Karimba Out January 31 on ESL

ESL Music announced it would release the 3rd full-length album of Novalima, titled Karimba, on January 31, 2012. This collective based out of Lima Peru brings together Afro-Peruvian roots music with modern electronic, dub, and afro-beat. The founders of Novalima, Ramon Perez-Prieto, Grimaldo Del Solar, Rafael Morales, and Carlos Li Carrillo, became friends while in high school in Lima. Since that time they have created a recipe to take Peruvian roots music into the future.Karimba takes the listener on a trip through history and travels the Afro-Diaspora of sound and struggle. From ancient to future, Novalima digs deep into Afro roots while extending those branches on that musical tree. Karimba sees them carrying on the tasteful and nicely balanced mix they refined with past albums Afro and Coba Coba. The sound they create works equally well in a crowded club of dancers, in the living room, or out in the open air enjoying the sun on your skin.Drawing on traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythm’s and percussion instruments like the Cajon, Karimba seamlessly blends clean, modern electronic beats with energetic and soulful organic instrumentation on top. The opening track “Festejo” starts out with dubbed out sounds effects and a soothing female voice pulling you into to a trance like state until the beat drops hard and you are locked into the Novalima groove. Tracks like “Revolution” create a circular feel with the 6/8 groove that take the listener between Cuba, Africa and Peru. “Mamaye” pushes forward with a driving breakbeat and washes over you with sounds from the future floating across the sonic spectrum as it describes an encounter with a wise elder woman. As the album progresses “Zarambe” takes an African ritual chant updated with a driving dub synth bass and 4 on the 4 kick drum to dance floor perfection. A big bang of energy can be found in “Hotel Barcelona,” combining Afro-Beat, club friendly drums. driving percussion, and swelling horn riffs, before dropping down into the title track to close out the album.Coming off the Latin Grammy Nominated Coba Coba from 2009 which reached #1 in the European World Music Charts as well as playing the festival circuit around the globe, Karimba takes the Novalima sound to new heights. Tracks from Karimba are already lighting up dance floors around the world played by a handful of DJ’s with advance copies. For those familiar with Novalima their new offering will please and surprise, and for those just hearing for the first time a new door of sound has just opened.

Gato Preto ft Gata MisteriosaTschukudu EP’+ remixes byACCESS DENIED, HANUMAN TRIBE, and FLORE

We are are very excited to present to you the debut release from female vocalist Gata Misteriosa and DJ/producer Lee Bass aka GATO PRETO.Call it Kuduro, Favela house, it’s a fat tropical music influenced sound, with big impact & great expression. Both artists having their roots in Africa, their tunes are the perfect blend between African music and urban electronic styles as Moombathon, Bmore, Bailefunk or Dubstep. When we listened to the original from GATO PRETO for the first time, we thought, damn we wanna have that on our imprint! Now being mainly a Breaks & Urban Bass label a decision had to be made regarding the constellation. Our choice was the mighty triumvirate of ACCESS DENIED, FLORE, and HANUMAN TRIBE, and the result s a massive 5track EP release:

The original by GATO PRETO comes deep, dark, with heavy basses & wicked Portuguese vocals by Gata Misteriosa. This is dancefloor Voodoo,  once it got you it will never let you go! If you wanna go further, you’ll find a similar version, but topped by vocals from swiss artist B Crazy, who also puts his spell on you! The russian Grizzly ACCESS DENIED fires some rough sounds out of the deepest woods of the taiga, cutting signal lines with unlimited drive, even some smack of funk, a wicked arrangement & surprising rhytmic devastation!HANUMAN TRIBE’s version ensares you first with beautiful melancholic atmospheres before it comes to a wild chop n drop of electrifying sounds & sawsynth action, this is the deadly liaison between hardelectro and tech breaks, you better be warned! And we are delighted by FLORE’s remix of TSCHUKUDU, this is fu**ing sexy. Very housy, deep as the Rhone, downpitched vocal madness and propulsive percussions, you won’t be able to keep your feet calm, quality stuff for the bellyshakers!

Many mentors employ this aspect of concert. Charice begins her tour on February 21 on Nagoya, before moving on to Tokyo for two more shows on the 22nd and 23rd. The show was a success. They eventually got fed up. Music websites almost went belly up a few weeks ago. My music is a time saver. In contrast, as we all remember, music downloader has an ability to gain music listening websites. After two members left the band, Beyonce, her cousin Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams became the three main members. In 1975, and High Voltage in 1975. There are other videos that I'm looking forward to, as well, such as ones featuring Dave Wakeling of the English Beat, Lost in the Trees, and Peter Tork of The Monkees! This would further aggravate problems with stream music further. Popular Country Artists Country genre had been ignored for quite a long time in the past. Boise Gathers Around the DoomtreeThe Collective Good

Boise Gathers Around the DoomtreeThe Collective Good

Though it’s said there’s strength in numbers, if your posse doesn’t have game, it doesn’t matter how many of you there are. But that’s not the case for Doomtree, which, with its seven members boasts, enough game to start its own wildlife preserve.

The Twin Cities crew is essentially led by P.O.S., aka Stefon Alexander. He was the first to release an album–2003′s Ipecac Neat–and, for a while, was on esteemed Twin Cities indie hip-hop label Rhymesayers. The Doomtree collective has numbered as many as 11, and though it took significant time for everyone to get things rolling, its members couldn’t be hotter.

Last year, rapper Sims followed up his acclaimed 2005 debut, Lights Out Paris, with the terrific Bad Time Zoo. The electric Dessa, a female spoken-word artist/soul crooner/rapper, released her full-length debut, A Badly Broken Code, in 2010. Rapper-producer Cecil Otter made waves with fellow producer Swiss Andy when they remixed Fugazi and Wu Tang into Wugazi’s 13 Chambers in 2011. Producer Lazerbeak released his debut solo album, Legend Recognize Legend, in fall 2010, and created all the beats for Sims’ Bad Time Zoo. Other members Mike Mictlan and Paper Tiger have also been busy.

Despite that, the atmosphere around the release of the label’s second collaborative album, No Kings, isn’t much different than its eponymous 2008 release.

“It still feels like we’re all trying to make our way,” Alexander said. “It looks different to fans. It looks different if you’re looking at it from any place but the inside out, from where we sit. In order to get put out in the first place, we had to bust our ass and work pretty hard, and it still feels that way.”

With each artist coming into his or her own, it’s no surprise that No Kings bristles with energy and vitality. The album showcases the breadth of collective tastes, though it is a tad schizophrenic sonically–from the clattering minimalist, Daft dance-punk of “Bolt Cutter” to soaring, soul-tinged anthems like “Fresh New Trash” and the smoky breakbeat blues of “String Theory.” The record truly reflects the group’s wide influences, since unlike last time, it was written completely collaboratively.

“All of us do have different tastes and different styles. In the first years of Doomtree, you’d notice that all of our visual aesthetics were really similar, and throughout the years, we’ve all defined our styles,” Alexander said, before moving on to explain the process. “All the producers–myself, Lazerbeak, Cecil–got together and discussed the beats. We made the beats together and then took those beats with us to a cabin where all the emcees of Doomtree spent five days working on it together.”

This new album keenly represents the Doomtree collective–from the eclectic approach to the uber-democratic creation process. On this record, everyone was more outspoken about their wishes than the first time around. But it appears familiarity has not bred contempt but rather a certain comfortability, and, of course, a detailed road map.

The group has been working together for a very long time as musical partners and musical friends, said Alexander.

“When it came time to actually collaborate for the first time, it was surprisingly easy. All of us know how to navigate each other just from touring.”

Indeed, the album’s title and approach reflects a motto–No King–by which the crew has abided since its formation, as difficult as that has been.

“Not everybody has to agree on everything, but everybody has to at least be sort of into it,” said Alexander. “Before we figured out who was consistent in certain ways and who gives less of a fuck about certain things, everything took a year-and-a-half. ‘I think we’re going to sign with this digital distributor.’ ‘Oh, I don’t know man.’ And that ‘I don’t know man’ would necessitate four months of back and forth.”

But that back and forth is also a reflection of how passionate Doomtree members are about what they do and how they do it. The band had a great local model in Rhymesayers, and Alexander would pick label employees’ brains for tips before signing with them. He eventually cut back lest they think he was taking advantage of them to benefit Doomtree.

“Pretty much after we got the ball rolling, it was on us to figure out how to keep it rolling straight,” he laughed.

While it may have taken a lot of time and effort to get started, Doomtree is certainly not wasting the momentum its members have gathered. Alexander has a P.O.S. album coming out sometime this summer. Dessa and Sims are also working on new records. Lazerbeak has an instrumental album with DJ Plain Ole Bill coming out soon, as well. Clearly, the group’s work ethic hasn’t changed.

“Because of the kind of workers we are, because of the kind of thought we put into what we’re doing, and because we all want to have musical lives as long as we can–with or without celebrity–there’s a constant to the work and the time and effort you need to put in,” Alexander said, before dropping some Midwestern advice. “You have to work in the winter–otherwise you’re probably going to drink yourself dead.”

That motto fits Alexander and Doomtree to a T: They’re not dead, so they must be working.

This feast is also known as the ?ig? Of course, you can do this. It is how I get a few more concert at times. A mode to contact the melody in, from the perspective of a nubile experimental melody listener (such as I am), would be truly avant-garde. The current members of Yoko's Plastic Band include Cornelius, Yuka Honda and Sean Lennon. In 1998, DiFranco's drummer, Andy Stochansky, left the band to pursue a solo career as a singer-songwriter. By the time he was a teenager, the guitarist had gained a couple of talent displays and joined a country band.
